I dont understand why taming with specialty is so weak.

With high skill and spcialty when I tame a obsidian wolf and have it fight a wild obsidian wolf it gets slaughtered.

The focus drain drains so much of my focus. I can actually kill and obsidian wolf as fast if I have my pet out or not.

Finnaly, tamed pets also require healing and rezzing as well as all the effort just to tame them. A high level lich fighter is just as strong with none of that and a fraction of them mana drain.

    Why why why @DarkStarr ?

If they made it powerful, then it would be a requirement for everyone to have it to be competitive, because it would be too good to pass up. The problem I feel is people think it's a Primary skill tree instead of a supplementary skill tree. People take it thinking that their pet is going to be their primary source of DPS or their Pet is going to "Tank" for them and soon realize their pet will never do either. At best it's supplement to any of the other primary DPS trees like Archery or Blades or Fire. It's not even a good supplemental. I would drop it and expect that it will get better around Episode 2 when taming Dragons is "supposed" to be released.

I dropped taming a long time ago... but in general, the only pet I thought worth having was the obsidian bear... his damage is NOICE!

Taming is not supposed to be like UO taming where it's a core "profession" but rather a supplemental skill set to other things.

Also as I understand it the strength of your wolf is linked to your other taming skills and it will not have the innate strength of the wild version automatically (if at all)

    Welcome to SotA @Bioxide

I agree with you that taming without the Taming Specalization skill enabled is very basic.

They then can out skill their wild conterparts, once you gain 100 in summoning 80 in Taming Specialization, and 92 in combat training. They are a mini-tank at that point. More if you increase those skills higher.

I am happy to answer any questions

Please read my guide for more Information at: https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/f...g-and-other-taming-skills-r53-updated.112216/

Great thanks, why is my lich with 6 million xp invested as strong as my obsidian wolf with 19 million invested? Keep in mind I have to tame heal and rez wolf. In addition to 2.5 more focus cost?

I also lose my neck slot. Unless the whistles can be enchanted im not sure)

Here are my current stats, taming is my major tree.

119 taming 90 summon pet 80 combat training and 72 in the mastery skill 80 concentration.

Archery is all 80s or so, death is 80s ish also. In fact my only 2 gms are in taming tree.

I have never had a lich summons so I cannot help answer that question.

I will agree that it will take a bit more xp and focus cost for a creature than a summons.

Whistles are not enchantable but we have been asking the devs for that.

I have moaned about taming..forever...but I am going to go against the grain here and say its not particularly weak with specialisation and if played correctly within normal scenes, not Boss encounters. Wolfs are rubbish, Bears, Spiders and Corpion are the only good ones to have, Bears best for lower skill players as they have great hp and can do a fair bit of damage...

I have found if a player just uses a pet to kill with the going can be slow and the pet takes an age to kill most things and needs a heal or a watchful eye on them constantly, however if a player is fighting with their pet and using their pet as an addition, their damage and their abilities can be useful.

Sure the neck slot can be used for something more beneficial to a player but really it will only add a few positive stat numbers which are generally low, +5 max (not including warlock chain or artifacts, although they usually are not worth wearing for downsides, increased reagent use, cost of repair or adverse effects). To me the giving up a neck slot is not that bad a deal nowadays.

Focus of course can be an issue...but..just say you can keep focus high or at least recharging fast enough that the negative downsides to using a pet aren't felt then the pet becomes a useful addition and not a stone(whistle) around ones neck...:)

Their damage is not spectacular but they can do enough, my bear or spider can take a berserker solo, with maybe one heal needed. This allows me to set my spider on one or two mobs, one after another to get their aggression off me while i take on others. I can solo Grannus colossus easily without them but they actually make my life easier and more fun using them. The mage their can be a pain, does high damage and if he catches you when unaware he can ruin your day, but with a spider i set it on him as soon as i see him, the spider takes a lot of the initial damage, and by the time the mage has decided I'm the better target hes dead or nearly so, the spider also does good damage versus him for some reason and could kill him quickly by self with only one heal needed.

In short if you can keep focus recharging well enough that you don't notice the difference of the neck slot, and have enough xp to get taming to a high enough level( once you reach a certain adventure level it may be more beneficial putting xp into taming than other defensive/offensive as it basically more damage per xp spent) and have good base skills yourself in chosen style, why not have a pet out.

I may do a video sometime of spider and me in Grannus, it may change some peoples minds on what they can do and the situations they are useful in. I wouldn't leave home without mine now, they much more fun than fighting by self and are nowadays with right skills not a burden as they once were.

Id like to see the video, I play a tamer archer I find im always out of focus if I switch to my lich pet I do better on focus and kill faster.

My best combo is water elemental for heals and just kill stuff on my own.

Read the R54 release notes, there is good news in there for tamming for sure. Since Its QA, I might not be able to say what it is here.

I would expect with specialization in now that tamming/pets should be come a lot more powerful and I think they have signaled this.

But, they have also talked about this a lot on video, tamming is extremely hard to balance. Here is just a few things to think about:

    1) Open class system, everyone can be a tammer without effecting any other build which gives makes it highly susceptible to being to uber. Pets dont work well with this design. This so far has left the pet a really minor benifit with only a minor negative (which is almost negligable being a little less focus).
    2) They have to be careful that pets are not so powerful that a person can just stand around afk and let their pet kill stuff. They had been used to exploit in the past (a lvl 1 player could get a fer red spider which wrecked everything for near free XP). They need to design something here to make pets powerful but demand more guidance from the players.

I just dont think people will ever see super powerful pets in this game unless they design specialization a lot more to the point where that pet actually replaces a major skill like say melee (sword, bludge/polearm) or magic attack based tree (air/fire/etc)

For example, maybe a super powerful pet soaks up most of your focus so that you cannot use another magic tree as a primary attack method.

I am enjoying having a pet with me as an archer. However, I wish that they would let us remove the necklace while the pet is summoned, so I can wear one of the many necklace artifacts I own, even if it means that I have to remove it and equip the summoning whistle just to summon every time.

I could be wrong, but I'm sure Chris also mentioned a bug or other non functioning aspect with current taming in that the pet wasn't levelling as it should with the tamers skill levelling.

Realistically all the specializations are far too weak. They need to amp their power significantly so there's actually a noteworthy difference between someone specializing in something and not. They, the devs, would free themselves up so much that way to balance around the specializations vs trying to balance with the notion of everyone is everything. Taming in particular will remain either FOTM or PooPoo until that happens.

Pet classes are not viable in this game in spite of years of efforts by myself and others to draw attention to them. Unfortunately, at this point, there is no reason to think they will ever be worth using.

It's also worth noting that at launch (the real launch in summer 2016) taming was one of the most broken things in the history of video gaming. Essentially fresh characters could obtain pets that were orders of magnitude stronger than what should've been allowed. It's been neutered since.

So, conversely to summons/elementals, Taming was at one point useful.

Lol... I'm sorry.. you must not have been present for the Launch of SWG - MANY more broken things there at 'the real launch' then here....

I know a couple of guild members, that after specializing and working taming skills up - they do not agree that taming isn't useful.

I've played every release of almost every single mmorpg ever made. SWG is one of the most over-hyped and over-exaggerated things in the history of hype or exaggeration. It was a great game, but it's playable in its original state right now, and has been in many forms for many years. Barely anyone plays this amazing game, and the one server that does have four digits of people playing it is really two digits of actual people and three digits worth of macro-bots, the hallmark of a good MMORPG, automated gameplay.

Anyway, I have no idea what the most broken thing in video game launch history is. You don't either. But both of these topics are definitely in that conversation.
