I've been farming in the Sanctus Spine region with some alts for the past 8-9 months, and in all of that time, I've killed maybe 500+ polar bears, and yet I've never gotten a single pristine head. I killed quite a few more arctic wolves than that, and gotten a grand total of 2 pristine arctic wolf heads.

Do the pristine polar bear heads really exist in the game, or are they simply a legend, passed down from generation to generation, like the Loch Ness Monster, or the ability to move your health and focus bar around on the screen? ;)

They have dropped in the past........ BUT
If I were you (and I could verify 500 Polar Bear kills via chatlogs), I'd report it as a bug.
I've gotten one a long time ago, and something could certainly have happened to the drop rate.

    Here's a pic of one:

i made a big push when they put the rugs in to make one of each AND restore my stock of pristine heads and have at least one of each in stock after. took me more than a week on and off, but they dropped.

I looted one pristine arctic bear head since release, I consider them to rare to care about. (like elven bowstrings, nice in theory but practical an mood point given how rare they are)

There are some items like that where they are just too rare. But it is a balance between being to common and just plain rediculous. Certain items are really bordering on the plain rediculous.

Mythical (or fabled) would imply that they only rumored to exist. Legendary would be more fitting as you can actually go see examples of them hanging from walls as trophies.

The issue with polar bears is not the drop rate. It is the population density. If you could kill them by the tens, as you can with obsidian bears in deep ravenswood, it would not take too long.

My advise, farm the twin trolls encounter to keep spawning polar bears. Never want for gems that way too.

Btw polar bear head is easy, the population density for the desert wolf is so low with the same drop rate. Took me, I kept track, 22 solid hours (not all at once) of killing desert wolves to get one.

My advise to all, farm desert wolves while it is still an xp worthwhile activity to get the head.

Been trying to get a pristine polar bear head since they were added, still haven't gotten a single one. Have tried every polar bear zone there is, including the troll encounter. Ridiculously rare.

    Same!

I'm used to hunt in Vertas Pass.
Not fun, but exhausting like so many aspects of the game.
Drives people away who dont make playing a game a sort of work or a chore.
It's ok if it's rare, it's not ok if it's ultra ultra ultra rare.

The Polar Bear trophy is now mine! It took about 800+ tries, but I finally hit the jackpot and got that pristine head. I'll admit that I jumped out of my chair and shouted for joy when it happened. LOL That stuffed bear head is now residing in a place of honor in my basement lair along with my other vict- I mean, trophies. Yeah, trophies!

    So, non-scientifically, a 1/800 chance, or roughly 0.125%, Yikes!

I have some pristine heads... I had no idea how rare they were... (I don't think I have an Arctic Bear Pristine head though.)

Now, I suppose I should look into finding recipes for building trophies out of them...

Some if not most of those are re-teachable, so you don't need the recipe. Just check the recipe here:
    http://www.sotatraders.com/RecipeList.aspx
search on "pristine", and put the exact amount on the respective station.

Don't you have to be standing next to someone who also has the Recipe for that to work? I have no idea how to reach someone a recipe...

Guildie spent two weeks farming there and Superstition Canyon, and got 1 Pristine PB and 3 Pristine Artic Wolf... so it is doable.
