I've tried this without steam loaded and it loaded to see if it made a difference. still crashes to desktop.

Will give it a try when I am home on Linux to see if I can reproduce this.

@Kaffien Sorry, I can not reproduce this on my Linux system.
My advice would be, stop using Ubuntu its the most evil blackbox Linux out there.

It works fine when using SOTA via steam. Isn't Ubuntu supposedly the one supported?
Don't even talk to me about evil.... I've stared down the maw of the beast that is gentoo, from stage 1 on a p3 800.
    I know pain and loss.

lol, yes Gentoo is a flavor where you have full control at a very depth level. The thing with Ubuntu is that they are trying to block the open spirit of Linux. Whenever you want to start doing some custom changes the whole system starts falling apart.

EDIT: I removed some part of the post.. nevermind my advice, if you are dependent on the propietary drivers stay away from the options I gave you. Most good distros are not supported...

I do recall Gentoo falling apart to after one library change etc. I will take a peak at it later.
    I DO have a Threadripper 1950x now sooo it's a bit better than a single core p3-800.

I have never heard of Solus. Debian, I've used at work but never for the desktop type stuff.
I'll fire up some vm's and see how they they feel.

I always use XFS for my FS. Fast performance :)

That is what I was figuring ... now i remember the handbook being much better. The stages are unclear. I'm guessing I want systemd stage 3?

for the cflags use -O2 -march=native
that will add all the best optimizations to your build binaries. I would start with the xfce desktop as that is the fastest. Then at least you have a desktop ready in no time. Then yiu could if wanted start building gnome or kde.

Would those flags be best for a Threadripper with 16 cores (32 threads) ?
I already had @world updating. It was still going a few hours later. I probably need to change the vm's settings to have more cores available. I only had 2 cores at 4.2 Ghz.

The -march=native will add all cpu optimization flags for your CPU automatically. So yes.
Are u going to play SotA on the VM???
