Will someone please explain Celestial Blessing to me?

As appealing as moon and water magic sounds to me, these skill trees seem rather weak -- most of the water spells are actually ice spells instead, and moon magic doesn't seem to have anything decent for defense or offense except maybe meteor shower.

But for now I'm still focused on the starting spells, and Celestial Blessing just doesn't seem to make sense. It says it's +20 Life resistance but doesn't degrade healing spells -- but the only nonhealing Life spell is Banish Undead; since players aren't undead, doesn't that mean the Life resistance will have no effect at all? It's a moon spell, but says it adds +20 moon resistance, which sounds like it will degrade the caster's other spells. Plus it has a -20 focus, which sounds like it's doing as much damage to the caster as possible benefit.

I take it for granted that most Life spells are going to be pretty useless for a solo player, but I'm really hoping that is not going to be the case for moon magic here.

it has death resist, which is good against undead mages.

life resist DOES have an effect on players who are vulnerable to banish, but that's only if they're using the ring of the lichkind.

Thanks! Yeah, I saw the death resist, and I'm trying to figure out whether it would be worth using or whether the -20 focus would cancel out any benefit. (My previous character was a bludgeon fighter with auxiliary fire magic, but now I'm trying to figure out how to keep a newbie mage alive AND in character (i.e., without fire magic), and while I don't mind the challenge, I do like to take my challenges on properly informed!)

Celestial blessing is very very good against PvE mages, it is one of those spells that is basically free to use considering the duration and its effects. Of course the sun, moon and life resistances aren't really used (for most) but I think it was a way to give us resistances to these schools considering the elemental schools have a passive for it (not warding)

From the Moon tree, I use Celestial Blessing, Fireflies and Meteor Shower. From the Water tree, I use Douse and Summon Water Elemental.

In theory (as in, if it's working as intended) resistance is only ever applied to attacks made against you, and doesn't affect your own casting in any way.

There are so many undead mobs in this game you will want to use celestial blessing in a lot of situations. It lasts for a long time, and you can put it on your passive bar so its well worth it.

    You can? *loading client...*

[edit] Ah, you can but it's unusable from there in combat.

It's a stock part of my buffs bar (along with purify, the dex boost, and evasion), for dealing with undead mages & liches.

Thanks for the tips, everyone! I'd been worried about the focus drain, but hadn't noticed until I specifically went to do the math that even a newbie character could take that focus drain easily.

Still a little dismayed at the spell options, given that I'm not looking to use moon magic as an auxiliary to other skills but specifically to BE a moon and water mage, without using skill trees that would be antithetical to that. The loss of the Stone Fist, Flame Fist, Strength of Earth, and Ignite Weapon spells is gonna hurt, I can tell that already, and I haven't even started using a wand yet instead of a staff. (Please tell me there are staffs elsewhere in the game that don't have skulls on them.) Fortunately, this character exists for roleplaying purposes, with no plans to go near any more danger than necessary; she'd pretty much be happy never leaving her tower, if she didn't need to earn enough resources to build that tower in the first place. Still, that's not gonna happen without at least some combat, so I'll figure a way around it somehow.

In the meantime, I reeeeeeeally want a Nightvision spell that turns everything blue or purple instead of green. I love green, but for some reason that particular shade I find noxious and really hard to see in. I suspect she's not going to be using it nearly as much as a moon mage should.

There was a time when nightvision was useful, rather than being the migraine nausea inducing mess it is now :( I hope that will return again someday.

Why do you have to loose those spells? I use spells from nearly every tree.

Like I said, I'm specifically playing a moon mage with a "minor" in water magic, not a generalist. A specialist in lunar and tide magic is not going to be particularly adept at earth and fire magic; those trees don't appeal to her and her family would look rather askance at her for even testing them, which she has no desire to do. It's bad enough that her water attunement is already higher than her lunar attunement, just because Ice Arrow is the only decent offensive spell she has, so I can't avoid using it more than the lunar spells.
