If anyone's interested in Star Citizen, they are down to the last 1600 alpha slots and they are going fast now. Like, really fast since the dogfight reveal at PAX.

If you know you want to play the game, you might as well pledge for a package with an alpha slot attached to it, than pledge in a week's time and not get one.

It's a freebie there for the taking, basically.

That number doesn't matter, remember that stretch goal where they said they'd extend the alpha slots to forever and ever? It involved
international server upgrades, they pretty much said that, so I seriously doubt that number is real.

Yes, I recall the stretch goal that extended the servers for alpha testing. No, I don't recall that meant the number of alpha testers became infinite. They put a new cap on it, which is almost gone now.

As far as the Star Citizen devs have displayed it, the second batch of alpha slots is limited, and has almost run out. If someone's going to pledge anyway, I'd prefer they do it now, than risk missing out.

So is Star Citizen an EVE killer?

Well, as much as I would like it to be (because I think EVE is about as exciting as playing a spreadsheet), they are really two different games. Star Citizen is about being in that cockpit, and living in the universe. EVE is more about... well, like I suggested a moment ago... crunching numbers and developing ships over time, and approaching the universe in a more "zoomed-out" sort of way, figuratively and literally. SC will take some people away from EVE, for sure, but it won't kill it.

Do you think there will be a lot of guys named Han Solo? Because if so, that will be awesome and hilarious simultaneously.

Well the main name people will use in the game is their "handle" which is a unique name, generated when people create their Star Citizen forum accounts. Basically when you start an account on the Star Citizen site, you give it a username (self-explanatory; unchangeable); then you give it a forum identity (changeable; can be the same as someone else's); and you also choose an in-game handle (unique, unchangeable). All three need to be different.

Then, when you are in game, your whole account has that unique handle, meaning character names can be more like the forum identity and be the same as other peoples. As such, there'll likely be quite a few Han Solo's in terms of character names, but not handles. If that makes sense? So the race to see who gets the best character name won't happen at launch; the race is already happening on the Star Citizen forum to secure a decent handle instead.

It would have been very cool if SotA would have used that model. But our first/last name system is fine.

I think a really great version is along the lines of GW2 where you have so many characters and have as many spaces as you want. So someone could be:

    Jeff
    Sir Jeff
    Sir Jeff Smith
    Jeff Smith of Bacon

Basically, whatever you like in the confines of the character limit. It allows a lot of variety, and for people to get pretty much whatever they want, so long as they're creative.

    Alpha Slot FAQ
No more Alpha slots will be available once they run out.
When they run out, those who want to join have to pay a $5 pass on top of any ship package and cannot play until all existing backers have been given a slot on the servers.

Basically look at what's super-duper cutting edge and mega expensive now and, by the time SC is fully released, you'll be somewhere in the top 50% of PCs, by performance, playing the game.

That'll work out to be a great rig for SC. Another way people are doing it is buying a really good rig now and then at launch time, a second GPU (as those models will be heaps cheaper by then).

    I think so.

Eve Online + real dogfighting + first person combat + much better graphics + single player offline mode

I haven't backed SC, considering it though. People are very upbeat about it, but I haven't really done much research on it.

How does the game work? In simple terms, e.g. is it just space-based / flying around? or can you also get out and walk around?

With regards to the pledges I presume you have to purchase a package and looks like you then eventually pay for a subscription.
