The new lighting does look impressive at certain times of the day.

At other times of the day, however, it can be way too dark.

And heck, whatever time of the day it was when I logged in, even though it was broad daylight, my character had a big black smudge on their face.

So it looks like lighting is going in the right direction, but needs some work yet.

Hmmm, I didn't have problems with the lighting. Nights were not too dark and the day was bright. It looked really good and improved the graphics quite a bit, imo.

I too from the start had an issue with a "dark" appearing world. Even during character creation, it was difficult to see the color of my avatar's eyes for instance - everything appeared shaded over! Logging into the gameworld, everything seemed MUCH darker than normal - as if the brightness or gamma had been turned down and many details were difficult to make out. Furthermore, I noticed there was no chance to currently alter brightness or gamma in game, so I couldn't confirm things were "normal" form that side, either.

PreAlpha R1 through R4 didn't have this issue at all - everything looked fine. I am testing on a Windows based PC at the moment (I also have a Linux box, which is actually my primary and preferred platform), an AMD 6970 GPU with admittedly older drivers (13.11), so I will try updating to 14.4 and see if that changes anything. Still, this must be something new this build as everything worked fine in the previous.

Stand on Knights roof in Kings port at dawn, i liked doing that before but now it is really spectacular. The light levels and colour are so much better though now. Also the night sky is so much clearer and fresh. That side of the new lighting is great.
But in certain places it can be so dark during the day even. I could barely see the front of some houses with their back to the sun and i think needs a little artificial light in these situations. But they are definitely going the right track.

Fire light doesn't have the warm ambience it used to have. I hope they fix that. ..Other wise looking good.

I think it's the ambient light levels. It feels like it's relying too much on diffuse lighting from a source (the sun/moon) to light the scene. In Owl's Head especially everything seems too dark during the day.

It seems better since I updated to patch 91.

I would like to point out, that any changes in the lighting may be later effected if Portalarium places independent moving multi-Moons that travel through both the day and nighttime sky.
I'm unsure how this would effect the scenes, but it's my un-educated guess that these may act as filler lighting much the same as used in any good photography studio. But, the possibilities of these has not been addressed in any answers within the Q&A anywhere.
Just an "FYI Unknown" that needs including in any lighting discussions ;)

Its because they have switched to linear lighting.

This is a good thing overall. It will just take time to readjust everything to be friendly/get the look.

The immediate upside is the artists will be able to see exactly what the output is as they do it, versus having to over/under compensate for a gamma model.

I'm sure they will get the darkness issue fixed by the next release. For now, go to options/video and turn your shadow distance to none. 100% lighting improvement on my screen.

Yes I loved the lighting, well or some of it could have been my new monitor. My avatars hair was so shiny *hey I want some a that shampoo*;) They did mention the lighting things weren't done yet as is with everything else isn't done yet.:)

I do really like the new lighting. However I do think torches and other light sources should give off a little bit more light.

Now much much better, but they already said that is "work in progress". But was the best surprise when I logged on.

Torches help a little. I now carry a torch all the time. Because nights are too dark.

That is kind of a good thing IMO...you should have to cary a light source if you are not in an area with lots oflighting.
