Setting context and strategically misleading choice of words aside.. you want to point to bad behavior to justify more bad behavior? Shouldn't all of it be disturbing on some level?

Within the context of gameplay.. conflict is a necessity. Cannibalism is not.

OK, maybe you are stuck in a castle under siege and out of food?
    I mean, it's such a joke to me that it's funny. But I wouldn't do it o_O
I just think it's a real "market Shocking Thing" that can draw those of a inquiring nature to participate in it, or want to become the valiant Knight to wish to make effort stop it.

Still yet to see any argument to convince me that any of this would be damaging to the game.

You assert that because something isn't a necessity, it shouldn't be in the game?

If they put cannibalism into the game, regulated like mad, do you pledge to abstain from playing?

Come on. We're in the building stage. This is where we can make all of the unnecessary fluff work, and the game will be that much cooler.

You know, marriage seems unnecessary. It could be pretty cool to see an official game-run ceremony, and possible titles... but eh screw it we don't need it.

How about we just don't have marriages? Or graveyards, since nothing stays dead, who needs them? We can pretend that they're there.

This dark idea opens up so many options for the sinister side of roleplaying (which many people value as a release from their strict and orderly lives) that it could potentially attract players.

As far as regulation, I'll be giving it some thought. For others interested, would any of you like to get together and brainstorm?

Yeah.. I mean it's such a non-issue, why not add it? But with some thought, like the lists that have been posted, it genuinely becomes a cool idea.

If marketing or appealing to an audience was an issue - there are probably other ways to attract people than by highlighting cannibalism :)

Also / the fun factor for stopping a siege will rest in the gameplay not necessarily in the "plot" /

but I would be motivated if say for example

if you did not save the town people would be executed / thrown from a top of a wall ... and you got a visual of it happening / but not other players performing the actual act

or even if it was another player - having a finishing move - ideally the sword in the chest

... beheadings are so 1980's (joke) ... lol

I am looking for my opposite in this thread and I'm also searching out the thoughts of others, because it is these qualities of the human online psych that bring about the questing questions, by which we are judged by the computer for our alignment as well as what the computer will then face us with down this path. Do we always choose the nice path? will the computer always give us a nice path to follow? will I as a Vegetarian Monk who cannot attack unless being attacked be able to live here as well?
The answer to all of those questions lay in the ability of the computer to present us with those questions through our quests.
So I say "Yes" the computer should allow that to be able to happen.
This is not saying that there is any skill around it, but DS has breached the thought of the necromancer possibly being a part of our game as well. So, is raising the dead and using their body something grotesque? "Yep!" But if we do not discuss these possibilities, then we may never be able to understand why they are needed.
The is a Quest Game, and I don't believe we are doing the computer any justice by binding it's hands to test our true nature, or our true greed. o_O

Well it's not a joke to others. Setting the actual subject matter aside for a moment. A truly good game doesn't need to rely on shock value. It's a double edged sword and any positive result is bound to wear off and the negatives will stay. Though I think SotA has a strong enough of a foundation to overcome some of the negatives.. I just don't see any positives here.

You run the risk of turning away at least as many people as you hope to attract and as far as anyone here who thinks it will bring in more people.. I wager none of them have any numbers to back up that argument.

Now I'm going to do something I don't normally do. Not that I like this idea in the slightest but I'm actually going to explain why I ask "how does this improve gameplay". It's because I want the people backing the idea to actually think about what they're proposing. How would it work? How can it be MADE to improve gameplay. Don't just justify the concept.. justifications don't improve gameplay. It's that I hope people will actually come up with the features that can be discussed.

All I got with the harvesting body parts and particularly named body parts was justifications. All I've really seen here is justifications of the concept. Not one person has come up with.. well a specially prepared brain pie could give a mage a boost to focus for a day followed by a really bad headache. That at least would've been something.

I remember asking what the purpose of naming body parts was outside of the humiliation factor. Ultimate bottom line answer? Was the humiliation factor. All justification and no answer.

    @crossbowsoda

Missing the point. Simply being unnecessary isn't a good case true.. but as I just posted you guys are all talk and no features so far.

There is no way to convince someone who doesn't have a problem with this that it'll be damaging to the game. No argument no matter how sound is going to convince them. Not even those who are utterly repulsed by the idea coming in here and saying so has no effect. So there's no point. By the same token however, the most convincing argument to add cannibalism basically amounts to "why not?" and no answer to that is going to sway supporters.

I'm asking.. Why? I'm not looking for justifications. I'm looking for how the hell is this going to work? What's it actually going to DO? Are you guys thinking about this seriously or is the limit of your support amount to "cause I think it's cool?"

Never the less.. I still argue that throughout all forms for entertainment.. shock value features have never made anything truly good. Entertainment with the greatest longevity tend to be absent of blood & gore, sex, foul language etc. Games don't need these things to be great either. If anything these things bring down the overall value whatever type of entertainment its in.

I don't find the idea disgusting or in bad taste myself, I just find it dumb. "We need EEEEVVULL in the game so lets add cooking and eating human flesh, wearing necklaces of ears, and displaying hundreds of bodyparts all over our house in an otherwise ordinary town!" - It's like a ten year old's view of "evil" - it's silly and ridiculous. I personally don't find it immersive and I don't think it would do anything for the verisimilitude of the game world.

Someone else brought up things like corpse animation (using tesla coils) and certain reagents. Those kinds of ideas coupled with things such as graverobbing are more interesting if done well and could actually have some substance to them.

Saw this kind of dumb stuff all the time in UO.. houses with piles of skulls on the roof, in the middle of the city. To announce to the world: a badass lives here!

OK, so we will pretend that the porno industry didn't or doesn't have any foothold in the online world of reality. I'll try and imagine that... o_O
OK, I'm unsuccessful in imagining not noticing those things.

My main concern, is that "I can't exist as good as I want to be, unless my opposite is allowed to be in the game".
By tying the hands of the computer by not providing evil for my opposite, I then cannot have my hands free, to be any better, than the blood thirsty Knight, "who thinks he's virtuous", but is only a battle thirsty, blood thirsty, gore wishing, domination seeking, ego driven, self absorbed seeker of a glory that holds only tears in any reality. We will be tested young sky walker or we will live in something that will not reflect and cannot reflect our true nature and find any true virtue therein.

Some of the greatest evil to overcome are the ones that lie within your self ... no physical representation of "evil" is needed to create compelling conflict

Talking about cannibalism - its not inherently evil

Dude.. since when does the porn industry produce anything but cheap thrills? I would challenge you to name me one porn flic in all history that either everyone here knows or made more money than say.. Fellowship of the Rings? Heck I might be happy with one that made more than Kenneth Brenagh's Henry V.

Your concern I would wager is unwarranted. The measure of one as a good or evil person has absolutely jack to do with who you compare them to. Why does the existence of an evil bastard make YOU a better person? You are who you are regardless. How does someone being evil make you more good? It doesn't.. it can't. There's no flippin correlation that can be found here. So you're a good guy who just defeated the worse evil bastard in the world. Whoops he's gone.. no more bad guys now suddenly you're not as good as you used to be.. because why? You're still you whether that bad guy was there to be defeated or not. Of course, whether YOU or anyone else knows that or not doesn't change the fact.

OK, maybe you don't like the nudity or things in anything more than a (G) or (PG) movie, yet Friday the 13th was still a block buster and so was Blue Lagoon.
Eating people is just another way "down what path will the computer take you to?" o_O You think success?
I want to be scarred when I'm in a dungeon! No no... not scared...umm... "Terrified"! I can't be terrified, if all that will ever happen to me is to get monster bashed. I want to be able to be attacked by cannibals and maybe a player cannibal will be their buddy in there with them.

I have seen no argument here yet, that can defend the why of placing such a limit onto the computer's testing of us, would be a good thing to do.
Just because the Time Lord Character will be RPed as a nice Monk, does not mean that I will not have an alter ego or more freely chose character to be played.
"My Time Lord script is written and not chosen by me. I am only the actor that makes that role a reality".

ok - in terms of being tested

I can imagine a scenario where you are deep in the underworld - and have no food - and you are presented with the option to eat human flesh / and increase the chance of you coming out of there alive ... we know that you will have to eat to maintain your strength

as for cannibalism - with the exception of one culture than I'm aware of / cannibalism is usually the outcome of extreme circumstances ... not something that happens everyday and certainly not something that someone advertises or puts on their front porch for everyone to see
