This is a two-part post, to make it easier to vote by Liking if you think it's a good idea.

We ARE doing this to make our houses easier to locate. Not JUST to have fun with romantic names.

    FIRST IDEA
Use the naming convention we have in Seattle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_layout_of_Seattle). Here, everything is numeric and directional. So, if it's on 1st Ave, I know it's downtown. If it's NE 160th Ave, I know it's in the NorthEast part of town. If the address is 16001 NE 85th St, then I know it's near or at the crossing of 160th and 85th (because the first part of 16001, that is 160, tells me the crossing).

If we went with this system, we'd easily be able to tell where a place is, just by knowing the address. I think that would better accomplish the goal than telling someone we live on Tailor's Rd in Ardoris, a place for which you will have to read the map, or else get a long list of directions. (And which also may not have any actual tailors on it.)

It's less romantic, but better accomplishes the object of the street-naming game.

*Thought should be given as to whether this plan should apply to the world map as a whole, or to each area separately.
*Also note, in my link above, you can see that downtown Seattle has a very limited number of streets with names, instead of numbers.

    Here's plan B.

    SECOND IDEA:
Realizing that the first idea might not be popular, I have a second one that roughly does the same thing. In the real world we have house numbers then street names. Ok, and maps can be put on a grid. AND, labelled grids have numbers and letters. So, if it's in 1A, you expect it to be on the top left. If it's in 10Z, you'd be looking on the bottom right.

So, my second idea is to go with all these romantic, but unhelpful, street names. BUT to do the addresses based on the GRID LABELS. So, everyone living in the 1A square, would have an house number that begins with 1A. Then we could append numbers after "1A" to indicate a specific house. So, my address might be 5D42 Upper Sq, Holtrot, etc.

That way all my visitors who didn't know the layout of Holtrot streets, could at least get to the right area based on the house number. I'd also suggest that all the maps be to scale, and that the city line up with top and left (rather than being centered) -- so we can approximate but not have to look at a map every time.

Grrrrrrrr! - I was going to suggest the obvious 'Lois Lane'
Now I'll actually have to think of something original *Puts on thinking cap*
    *Begins to ponder*

Agree, but there will be maps, the towns are not as large as Seattle and the roads are not that long. I prefer to tell my friends "I live in Holtrot on Poplar Street, third house on the right when entering from the south" than to say "I live in Holtrot at 5D42 Upper Sq".

    How about using street names from different languages? Such as;

    Primavera
    Invierno
    Verano
    Otono

Those are four season in Spanish!

I love the idea of having street names in foreign languages. It would be nice when entering a POT owned by a certain language community to see all street names in that language. It would also mirror reality to have different quarters in the large towns with streets named in different languages. Maybe the towns won't be large enough to do this realistically though. Maybe some simple Ultima-themed (and thus easily remembered by the entire community) names like "Via del Avatar" scattered about? Just brainstorming here...

Obviously we'll need a HAIGHT - ASHBURY district tribute somewhere!

I nominate the street names "H8" and "Ashbury". H8 for obvious reasons, and 'ash' means ash, and 'bury' means to bury, both of which fit right in in a fantasy game environment.

I would also like to nominate NPCs for Grace Slick, Janis Joplin and Gerry Garcia to be placed within the district. (Gladly the whole Grateful Dead!)
If Portalarium and the community would like, Gerry Garcia's NPC could be named "Cherry Garcia" as a tribute to an ice cream as well, which would be two honourable mentions in one (The ice cream is named in honour of Gerry Garcia, in case you didn't know). Gerry could be sitting or standing, plunking on a lyre.

That would awesome but there is the difficulty in showing some languages in runic, because I think we have them displayed in runic.

    Brisket Boulevard
