good think is most of your cons. are cous of the alpha status of the game. I musst say the combat still feals wrong, i think the reason behind is that port tryed a lot of hybrid things. but the combat got realy improved i would wish that the magic treas would be way more different to each other than they are. Most of the spells at the moment sound boring or copy of other treas renamed with other animation.

    back to topic:
we don't know why people stopped playing SotA,maybe waiting for a final release, playing other games, having summer holidays etc.We can only imagine....

I started with R21,and we all know that there are still some game issues but we all agree with entering a construction zone every time we're going to play.
I like this game and hope it will be a wonderful experience to me,there is so much more potential than other games are offering to me.

Some people spend so much money for having towns,or cool stuff from the shop, but that's no problem.
Development isn't cheap, and i'm thankful that i'll be able to play this game too, without spending thousands of dollars.
There are not only townowners who want to take financial advantages from their citizens-i know a few guys who are very gentle and won´t take any gold or dollars for letting you live in their towns.

I would like something like a cap for skillpoints,so you have to take decision,in which things your character is specialised, and people will be forced to help each other.
It doesn't feel realistic to me that one char would be able to fullfill all skilltrees and all crafting trees,i would like the players would complement each other.

I'm not expecting a new Ultima,i'm not expecting a new Ultimaonline-i'm hoping for a fantastically developed SotA which i can share with a gentle, helpful and playful community.

(english isn't my native language,i hope it's not so terrible to read^^ )

Combat is still way too clunky to enjoy. We can't even use our mouse to select combos after pressing R. Still. :-(

I would very much be interested to see hard proof that many people have stopped playing. I know many people that are taking breaks. I know some of them are disgruntled with the very thing you mentioned--skill decay. And some of them simply are like Razimus and don't want to get burned out before release. For how ever many people we "lose" it seems like there is an abundance of lovely new people taking their place. And when our early backers return, which they will, they will be adding to the population once more.

And this is exactly part of the reason why I would LOVE if the devs considered at least trying out a global or regional chat in-game while the community is small yet growing. So that those of us who are online...can find each other and communicate with each other in the game. I know, I know lots of people are strongly opposed to it and think it will break the regional economy. I say otherwise...but opinions aside, couldn't it at least be worth testing out while the community is small and spread so thin across the timezones? I feel like it's worth a chance. Just to see what would happen.

This is the most I have ever played. I love this new system. Does it need some work, sure why not.

    Hallo Edward :)

    Deine Überschrift lautet:
    Many people stopped playing

    Totally agree with you.
I started playing in r20 after not playing for more than six months, and I find SotA to be immersive, interesting, challenging, unique, and incredibly fun!
I've been streaming the game and bringing in a lot of new pledgers, and I'm playing with a lot of new people.
Are there metrics that show a decline in players logging into the game?

I find the use-based skill system highly satisfying. I've always preferred games that let a player level up their character's skills by actions they take in the game vs. clicking points into a skill and suddenly being an expert at it.
Regarding issues with the skill trees, it has been stated that several tweaks and changes will come in future releases, so I know that what seems funky (underpowered magery, for example) will be addressed in builds to come, especially if more players give their feedback and report bugs.

Skill decay, as Chris has articulated in many posts, is very minimal, and happens over a long time. If you log in and play regularly, your skills aren't going to decay to any extent that will negatively affect your gameplay.

I'm thankful that I get to give feedback and report bugs and be part of making this game without the obligation of working at a game company with a job as a tester or developer (I did that for 10 years, and it's not as fun as people think it is - it's hard work.)

I get that our gaming culture is characterized by consumer gaming, in which players want to jump into a game they get on Steam and click away and mindlessly play. But, this is a pre-alpha experience, and gamers who buy into SotA are agreeing that it's a work in progress. With that in mind, people with negative thoughts and feelings about the game can help us all by contributing feedback about the game and giving constructive criticism with solutions, examples of what to change and how to change it, and brainstormy dumps instead of feckless complaints.

I hope to see you in New Britannia! When you're there, look me up!

Like my friend Leila, I too had taken a small break for a few months, and when I came back for R20 (or was it 19?) I found myself playing more and more.

I also like the use-based system, and I'm completely OK with decay. As a real life example, I used to be pretty fluent in Spanish when I was younger, but it's been over 20 years since I've spoken a word of it, and now I feel like it's a completely foreign language to me again.

to the OP, it could be that people are taking a break. School has started this month and that eats into peoples' time while they get into the swing of a new high school, university, etc.

Hello everyone! Yes i am still here, and yes I still play (though not as often as I used too) So before I get started, and everything I type gets twisted out of proportion, and someone tries divert this thread into a PVP vs PVE discussion (by the way, there is a PVP forum just for that. Many to be exact! Pick one! :)), and before a "self proclaimed" English Master comes in and tries to grade everyone's spelling, non-constructively (eventually i will misspell, i promise you!;)), I would like to clarify exactly what the OP typed (who i would like to point out, tried sharing his/her thoughts, by bridging the gap between their native tongue and ours! Keep in mind SOTA is an international game not just an American or English game!) I respect, and thank them for at least trying! So here it goes..

    THE OP Said.............

In the last few weeks i noticed how many people that i normally play with every single day have stopped playing.
After talking with a lot of them, they all told me the same reasons.

First reason: Skill decay and the fact there is now a skill cap, and how back then it was promised that we would not have hard cap at all.
    (is what i understood)

Third reason: The feeling of grinding when your forced to train skills you dont want to use in the skill tree, to get to the skills you really need.

A lot of people who are active now only log in most of the time for player events, and i am talking about people who have always been active in the past, who worked on bug finding, testing, and supporting the community.
There is something wrong big time, and a lot of people that where 100% committed to the game suddenly started talking about quitting for good! Even some big town owners!

    @Chris
    @DarkStarr
something has gone really, really wrong.

Now for what i see (In my personal observation and talks with others) people have stopped playing regularly, because............

1.) The new set up takes too long to accomplish anything, in the limited time most of us have, we work, we have kids, we have real life situations that take up more of our personal time , than most of us have to offer! Not everyone is retired, or living at home with Mom and Pop, with no responsibilities to tend to on a day to day basis. Even in UO you could gain skills in what little time you had to offer!

2.) The combat is really lame at the moment, spells, and weapons dont dish out as much damage or healing as expected due to the unbalanced or broken skills we have now (or skills placed in trees we really dont need for our characters, even though we need a particular spell death tree is a good example, do we really need that first spell in my opinion no.)

3.) Repetitiveness - Everything is the same, wolves, spiders, skeletons, bandits etc... with hardly anything to loot that is worth while!

4.) Monster loot - Sucks, no need to explain any further on that.

5.) Not everyone is like each other, some people like to RP, PVE or PVP, and others could care less about the story line we just want to kill stuff get loot, and enjoy playing without following a story line. (personally id rather make my own story line, its kind of an RP aspect in a way!) Right now the game is leaning towards certain types of play and not others.

6.) Favoritism - there is a lot of favoritism towards certain groups and people! This creates animosity towards players of all levels of game play, and it should be toned down, or it will definitely be one certain group of players only playing this game! Not to mention it is bad for business if your trying to make money! You dont want to lose income for the game by losing players.

There is a lot of room for improvement in this game, it is not the greatest game out there (not yet)! It still has a chance if things are done differently, combat is done differently, and game-play is done differently. My advice for those in charge is stop making things more complicated, when it does not have to be! (dont fix something that is not broken) Improve on it, but dont complicate it! Some new players to the game are totally lost at start and have no clue what to do, and that can be a game killer in the first 5 min of play. Also keep in mind a lot of us have been here since day one, and we already know what needs to be done basically because we have been here that long!

this is not the completed game we are still in testing phase and we can help change things by giving suggestions (old schoolers remember when our Avatars could neither jump, nor swim, but all that has changed because we voiced our opinions on it) mostly here in the forums.

So anyways there's my take on it.

Its not the greatest game out there, but if things change it could be!

This is still an alpha game...should people be spending all day accumulating stats that are going to be wiped?

OMG! You didn't put an apostrophe on "don't", how could you!?!? You don't know anything and your opinion is thereby worthless! ;)

I am, of course, kidding. :D Blaque, you raise many a valid point. I think we'll get there eventually. Totally agree that loot is terrible and could be improved.

I take a break for this release because, ... think of Sota as a person ... this release she(?) acts weird. I dont understand much of her behavior anymore. I do the same things as usual, using Magic tree for example, but i cant kill things (like before). At the same times she has become quiter, i dont see anymore how much i gain from killing something if any. So i dont know how much i should trust her right now, but at the same time she must have got access to my exp-creditcard, because my exp decays now over time  ... Deffo time for a break ;)

Well said blaquerogue. Very well. Personally I'm trying to figure out why I'm stuck not gaining adventure level at all. I'm in an appropriate zone. Think I'll just make a new character. I totally agree on the skills, I equipped some axes the other day
and every time I used this one axe skill I was faced away from the mob after the skill was used :p Maybe it is a hit and run skill... j/k.

    Howdy, greetings and salutations

I have worked with many new players over the last few weeks.... i could easily post names and numbers as i do i have some of that on record in a book i keep.

I can say this i have stopped several new players from quitting this game for the following reasons (some yes will be fixed in future releases)

    1) the game is just to damn difficult...
    2) no idea what to do where to go
    3) doing quest's with no real direction
    4) being slaughtered like pigs
    5) the grind is a $!^%# and i have to start from 0 again in 90 days
    6) people are unfriendly
    7) there's no one around to really play with
    8) i cant kill enough stuff to repair my damaged armor
    9) there is no one to talk to (referencing global chat)
    10) no clear understanding of combat decks
    11) no clear understanding of glyphs and skills (a lot of skills have very little description of what they do)
    12) im so lost and cant find anywhere and yesterday i spent 2 hours lost in game where the only thing around was pot
    13) other games i play have better graphics
    14) lag lag lag lag lag lag
    15) i cant speak to anyone cause im stuck talking in whisper to someone and cant get out
    16) i don't get it nothing makes sense

these are the problems that im addressing to new players on a daily basis. yes many of us veteran player's can easily answer these questions and fix the problem but we need to engage those players more. by no means am i lessening any effort by a lot of players like me that are trying to help.

I personally along with friends of mine have helped numerous players who were ready to quit the game and never come back get excited over this game and several of those people have even pledged up.

(off topic) the skill decay is so minimal that even after not playing 5 days straight nothing was noticeable changed. the skill decay is a non factor. im sure taxes on the other hand will be a factor if they are too steep in the future to pay with the gold we get from mobs pathetically low.

I my self am at a place in the game where there really isn't anything i haven't done (other than kill that damn fire chicken) so i wander around and use sota more as a chat service and talk with my friends. that is why i am able to sit around in different cities and wait to help people. not saying im bored with the game its just that i have gone into and out of alpha burn several times and found alternative ways to make the game fun for me again.

    @Chris
    @DarkStarr

the only other problem i have personally witnessed is the lack of self control and neutrality of some moderators. where i will fully admit some are doing a great job others let things get way out of hand let some players get away with far more than other players and then ding the wrong people for getting snippy back when they were attacked and felt they had to defend them selves.

    sincerely

You can use your mouse to select combos after pressing R.

After pressing R, press the mouse button that corresponds to the number on your quickslot/hotbar where your skills/glyphs pop up.
To set up your mouse buttons to correspond to quickslot numbers, bind mouse buttons to keyboard keys and customize how to activate each number on the skills/glyph hotbar in the Options menu under "Controls."

    To do this:
    1. Open the Options Menu (press esc to access.)
    2. Select Controls (on the left.)
    3. Scroll down to Quick1 (2,3,4, etc..._)
    4. Hover your mouse over the 2nd column (assuming you want to keep the keyboard functions in the 1st column for each quickslot in tact)
    5. Click the mouse button you want to correspond to each quickslot number (keyboard keys 1-0 that corresponds with your skills/glyphs on the quickbar)
    6. Click close
