Yes, it is sort of sad isn't it ?

90% of the conversations I have been part of have involved the other user whispering to me, even if I am standing right in front of them, and was using Local Chat to converse back.

I haven't played an Online Multiplayer game since Starwars Galaxies, so maybe the use of "Whisper" is simply the standard nowadays.

Sign of the times I guess. :p

Kind of wish there would be a visible chat bubble when someone is talking in local chat. Would be kind of funny seeing a lot of bubbles pop-up in town over players head as they chatted. It would really feel busy then because that's kind of what's missing in games. The 'noise' of local conversation - if vocal chat isn't possible then a visible chat would be a funny replacement? :DVisual clutter as annoying as noise pollution?

At least, I would notice when someone was trying to chat with me and I'm not in chat mode - aka I have only tab3 open with level up notification popping up.

I usually play single player online until I feel that my character is sufficiently strong enough to do some of the harder stuff.

Sadly, I haven't played multiplayer online since the wipe. :(

Trust me, not only that forcing players to use an archaic form of chat will most likely drive more people away than anything, but you don't want to read what most people are saying anyways.

Having the devs remove group chat and guild chat should probably be at the top of your agenda too...
    Good luck with that.

What's important isn't that there's local chat happening everywhere, it's that conversations happen at all... which it does. Once this game actually gets released and the mass will start pouring in, you'll probably going to thank god for the ability to remove any public chat from your tab.

Seeing local chat above people's heads is an option. It's on by default too.

Apologies to anyone who I ignore/don't stop to chat with, my pre-alpha time has been whittled down pretty much to just doing the hat quests and taking a quick peek at new features. When the world is persistent (and if I have time to play) I'll be much more likely to greet you :) doubtless I will then have to learn about 'whispers' and whatnot as well!

Sorry you have limited time to play Vaentorian. But for the future or if you feel the need to ask a question, just add anyone to friends list under the 'f' key type the name hit return and they are added, then right click their name to get the whisper option, then to return to local chat to type to someone not in whisper type /l. Also you can right click any character to get the 'add to friends list' option. After they are friended you'll see when they are online. Friends lists are persistent through wipes so far, but on launch that will not be the case. I know you said you wanted to wait to know, sorry for stepping over that and telling you anyway. Perhaps it will help another player who does not know though.:)

Interesting enough, the focus on bubble chat coming out of your character is one of the first things I brought up in the first Duke and LOTM round table in March 2014 and later that year in one of the community hangouts.

You can check out the discussion here at 6:14 and what I am talking about is the chat focus on the character ( I really mean bubble chat) instead of a chat box and the Devs putting time into developing that instead of creating a mess of chat channels in the chat box.

For every social person I've seen, I've met twice as many more running in straight lines between quests and content. A lot of people are barely here, simply watching the game evolve. I know I am. Once released, I'll be making an effort to socialise. For now, I don't want to get too involved until everything is finished and we're actually participating in the "prime" world/story line as a community.

The chat is horrible, but I do use my chat box/log often. I can't count the number of times I scroll through the box only to to see where I missed someone trying to talk to me. Not too mention the number of times I do try and chat only to pop up 5 or 6 windows before I realize I'm not in chat mode any longer. Or, I'm in chat and not realizing it and try to run and nothing but "wwwwwwwww" comes out.....Maybe I'm old school(or just old), but I loved the chat in UO. Was easy and straight forward and you can still whisper and all that-was truly a more social atmosphere in my opinion. Bubble chat would be worse imho-who wants to see bubbly words all over?

    @Efilnikufesin

You can create multiple chat tabs to help organize and keep track of your chats, combat log, quests and system information, so you do not have to "scroll through the box only to to see where I missed someone trying to talk...".
I have a chat tab just for whispers, one for guild and party, one for combat logs, one for local, emotes and general system info.

Why not just have a simple sound alert when some one speaks to you.

I am sorry you have had this experience :-(

There was a long thread some time back about people not responding to local chat. I don't recall anyone saying they don't respond on purpose. The chat functionality needs a lot of work because currently it is possible to be in a conversation with an NPC and not be aware of other conversations. Also, people are often away from the keyboard and aren't flagged as being AFK. Keep in mind that the "unfriendly" avatar you are trying to engage with may not speak English and therefore keeps all chat windows closed.
I don't know about UO chat (never played UO), but I experience the same problems with the SotA chat. If I don't reply to someone, I didn't see the chat attempt. wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

I usually engage new players in convo. Now if they picked a stupid name, you get nothing from me. I am a role player and usually try to talk to people with good RP names.

That's the best option right now-I am utilizing that method currently and not thrilled-it just takes away from the game too much imho. Trying to keep the tabs current and straight along with whom I'm talking too...and still doesn't stop the occasional "wwwwwwwww" issue. The only time I want to go to a dialogue box is either for info, whisper/guild talk. It should be optional, not mandatory. It won't keep me from enjoying the game mind you, but the chat...grrrr..... I guess I will have to adapt, overcome.
