Magic is great BUT it needs attunement and skill levels before you can do any real damage.

The skeleton infested village in Wynton's Folly is great for levelling if you are into melee.
Initially you may die a lot, but it has an ankh nearby and the skellies drop good loot that you can either sell or turn into scrap (thus levelling up production).

I just checked, and did not see a skull indicator. It is easier than Deep Ravenswood, if that helps.

I'll risk it and give feedback. It can't be worse than Wyrmsands - been sneaking in there to grab some ore while the earth elementals and copions slug it out. ( the copions are much deadlier, go figure)

The scorpions in the scene just before Wyrmsands ( I forget the name ) I noticed to be far weaker this release ( The wolves are harder ) . I do not about the Earth elementals in Wyrmsands though as they were always tough before so perhaps they still are..

I've not had great progress in this regard, with the gathering seeming slow relative to other activities. Skinning is relatively fast and I've leveled up production in general that way, but not so much mining to get enough ores to start really crafting armours and weapons. I am certain my ore gathering techniques are not most efficient considering the time it takes me to gather ore. Any tips on current ore gathering with the aim of putting together a suit, and even a critical suit at that? Anything that speeds my progression in gathering and crafting metals will be appreciated (although I've much room to increase combat skills as well I've gone much farther there). I'll hold off on asking for hot tub tips for now :D

*P.S. thanks for the tip on crafted instrument & whistle, had not even considered that as a source of extra power if you get crit items there

I like to sit in shardfall to gather ore, the epitaph in desolace has a nice clump of copper nodes at the start near the slimes, etceter mines has 2 hidden rooms with good amounts of copper also and graff is good for iron and silver ^.^

You might want to add what exact equipment you were/are using for these scenes, since that certainly has a good deal of impact on gain per time and survivability.

Ah yes, the spiders have found homes in most all scenes - and I personally detest the things.
However, regarding spiders or any other mob you want to fight or avoid, the one thing that Themo said that I believe to be the biggest part of skill gain success efficiency is this:
    Spot on ! @Themo Lock

Every mob in every scene has a "tether", ie how far from it's central spot that it is allowed to range to.
Learn where every mob is in a scene and how far each of their "tether"s are.
Find ways to aggro one and pull it away to be fought alone - if necessary or desired. (Some sort of range attack, ie a Fire or Obsidian Arrow, Searing Ray, summoned pet set to Aggressive, Archery,etc....)

The "key" is knowing your areas, what mobs are where in it, and how far they range on their "tethers".

Here's a list of the hunting areas in Hidden Vale that I drew up a while back for reference (including the ones where the Skull Totems have not appeared as yet):

Maps are currently available for all of these (Hidden Vale) areas, so that you can more easily remember where each mobs "area" is..... Mitch the Bookseller in Kingsport is one NPC that sells them.

    Enjoy....... ;)

Yea, Greymark is an unusual area. It has Tier 5 harvest nodes with lower Tier mobs.
To my knowledge, this is the only area that has different Tiers for resources and mobs.

Interesting table and good tips @FrostII , the max mob health seems to have a direct relationship with the area's difficulty rating. Solace bridge (S1) has the brown bears with 100Hp and I think Wyrmsands (S4) has mobs with 400-500hp health.

What Tiers are the Cragg mines, then? Animals with over 1000 hp can be seen there.
