A long time ago, I remember talk of how our surnames would be unlocked later in the game. The game itself, as it currently stands, lets us have two names from the start. So I'm just trying to get a grasp on this... can we give ourselves a single name (in the firstname box) and, even if a second name is available to us, or unlockable later, just keep on having a single name?

I am interested in the company response to this question. It won't change my personal gameplay, but I am curious.

I don't see that changing. The idea that last names are now unlocked through game play so now they are mandatory seems, backward.

If last names were going to be required, they would be available to everyone, at the same time.

I like two names so far. Its a good option especially if we have alts later on.

At the last hangout I think the Devs said they would be re-thinking their original stance on names (letting avatars keep the names they have been using so far and not creating a name-grab similar to the land rush). Does anyone have the exact quote?

The devs said they were looking into ways to make the necessary changes without having a social wipe. So, we would keep our guilds, friends list, etc. They said they can't promise there won't be one, but they are trying to prevent it.

I dont like how we are locked into the Caucasian/European style of systematic naming: first name + surname. Its silly if you're not roleplaying a medieval white person. My full name doesn't fit into the ethnocentric standards for naming in SoTA (or pretty much any MMO ever made), as it is a concept, rather than a phonetic ID.

So yeah, being able to type a phrase as a name would be best. FN LN is like having a "primary key" in a database for a name.

Well, the game originally was based on medieval England and France. But it has been a long time, and perhaps the name thing will change.

I think everyone should have to be named after a variant of Benedict Cumberbatch :p

@Sir Frank yes, I understand this, but every single human being in medieval England or France was not necessarily of ethnic origin of those regions. Not everyone should be forced to have a "Christian" name.

Its more of a wider poke at the entire MMO industry - its always FN + LN. I dont want to be "**** Baker" or "Mary Pigglesnort," I'd rather be "She Who Imitates Others as Shadow," or "He Who Commands Silence from Fire."

Too bad English is a brutally and unforgivingly inefficient language!

/watches as all the "English" and "French" people just say, "meh, you're just 'Shadow' to me!"

So how do people call you? You must have some sort of phonetic ID or do you guys not talk to each other? I personally would rather call you by a single sound (that means something to you) than a full blown sentence (that means nothing to both of us)... not to mention your in-game presence with a sentence-long name would fill up my entire screen.

Religiously, my full name includes the name of Joseph, my grand-father's name, my uncle's name, another uncle's name, my name and family name... I'll be the last guy to be annoyed for not being able to enter my full name because it's a pain in the @$$ to say and type. Where I'm from, nobody calls you by your full name anyways.

With that said, I like really short names (see my forums ID)... so I'm hoping they won't be enforcing last names. Lets us have a string of characters and fill up the last name field if we want the game to recognize it.

Last names at the start are actually a pledge reward... https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/?page_id=35139&open=immortal_adventurer so Portalarium are going to have to do something about this!

Does the game not allow for spaces in your name?

Edit - Changed my name back :)
