The background (especially the ships and airships) are a focal point of this scene. Unfortunately they are blurry, and that ruins it.

It especially ruins use of the spyglass or telescope.

Funny, DoF mods for Skyrim are some of the most popular ever for that game.

As with all things, their first iteration of anything is wonky, buggy, incomplete, etc. The DoF in SotA as currently implemented is definitely all of that. I would like to know how far they're going to go with this. Will this only be static DoF or will it offer dynamic DoF?

In any case, I thought DoF by itself would incur a slight performance hit. But I guess they are offsetting it because they are now forcing LoD in the distance. Without the blur, the LoD will make the game look even worse at a distance, since as they enable LoD on more and more assets in the game anything in the distant horizon is going to look like a blocky mess.

But I would tend to agree -- if you have a system that can handle it, perhaps there should be performance options to adjust DoF, LoD, object distance, etc.

That said, I'm guessing there are certain limitations with the engine or code that up to a certain point will only get you diminishing returns regardless of the hardware you throw at it. And to maintain consistent performance, some of this is going to be imposed. I would favor consistent framerates as well as sacrifice graphic fidelity to enable a deeper world sim (AI, etc).

I think my brain will adjust to it. It's that initial change shock of where my eyes are use to looking within the screen that will likely change my view to where I don't notice it as much...
    But I still don't like it... :(

It's not really doing that - it's more like making LOD ugliness extremely obvious and in your face.

The difference between a septic tank lid, and a septic tank actually popping up into the middle of your yard.

You guys are still not seeing what it is actually supposed to look like due to a few bugs.
We are going to move back the start distance a ways.
The rendering cost is not zero but not in the critical path so not hurting performance.
Also, as for the boat shot above, that is actually one of the worst case examples we were trying to improve on. We can't use hardware MSAA because we have to use deferred rendering path to handle dynamic lights better. Without anti-aliasing those boats because a hot mess of pixel soup at a distance because of all the ropes and lines on the sails.

Bottom line, we will fix the bugs and move back the distance for this for R32.

This is fair enough, and the reason I started the thread, but I'd still like the ability to just turn it off. It's one of the key things stopping me playing R31.

Awesome! However there are still times when taking scenic shots or recording video segments when I would like to completely disable LoD. Yes, it would give my PC "BEASTY" something to chew on, and the fps would suffer, but in some cases it would add greatly to the end result. Please?

Can you please add an option to disable it (especially the sharpening)?

I think the sharpening of close items, without the DoF blur of background items, would look fine. The items nearby would be crisper (assuming antialiasing starts working), and the background textures would be consistent.

Sharpening kills antialiasing. They are mutually exclusive.

I personally can't stand the DoF blur... it made spectating at a PVP tournament yesterday an annoying experience.

    Tone it down MASSIVELY please.

I'm not a fan of this , Nintendo 64 use to do this to help authenticate that its new and cutting edge ,,, when the game made me feel like I was Mr Magoo. sure if its in your face you can see it ... but outside of several feet it looked like Vaseline on a the screen.
