Can people steal from my home with the door left open?!

(on another post I saw someone elude to people not locking their doors being something they liked taking advantage of)

If you set your lot permissions correctly, they shouldn't be able to.

    Like Idy mentions above.

What happens is that people lock the lot doors and then proceed in not setting proper permissions indoors on their containers.
So we've had at least one report where someone locked the doors and then put pledge stuff in a Public Chest which was then subsequently gone.

However in my own testing this shouldn't be possible since people can't even step over the threshold of my home even with doors open when access is Locked Doors. So there must be something else going on.

I have 2 storage containers in my house, and I set the lot option to lock doors. Is there a seperate option to lock internal chests ?

If you right click on a container you will see permission options. I'll leave it to someone braver and with more time than myself to explain what they all mean.

That was the case where the person put a public chest right next to the door where the thief can reach it from the outside.

If you use a regular storage item, set a proper permissions (I.e., co owner by default) and never add someone else on that permission level, no one else will be able to access your storage.

    Emergency permission settings:

I right clicked on a chest and got the pop-up menu on the right. At the bottom of that menu is "Permission Options...". Click that and you get the menu on the left.

Step 1: Set the left menu options as you see above.
Step 2: Set the right menu options as you see above.

Repeat step 2 for every container you have already placed on your property.

Change the above settings to suit yourself when you know more about how they work.

In regards to this, I wonder what the "Pick Lock" skill is going to be used for. I have it unlocked now, but you can't put it into a deck yet. I wonder if it will just be for accessing locked doors and chests out in PvE scenes, or if there might be more nefarious actions you can do with it relative to this topic.

we need to remember that the term 'thief' doesn't apply in this case. You can't 'steal' something that someone has put in a public chest.

Note: the last time I tested in R33 the Public Cache with restricted removal settings was still allowing people to remove items who were not at the appropriate level.

A public cache chest should probably be always public. Use a normal chest, if you want to store things. The manual has a good section on house and item permissions.

Could Single Player and Friends play modes be used as a free Grand Master Stealth skill with regard to sneaking in someone's public house while they are rearranging things and changing permission settings? The home owner would not be able to see such players, but the players may be able to access any container that was temporarily made public.

    Exploit?

The permission system is currently very confusing. It's also incomplete and should be soon scheduled for refactoring. Hopefully we'll see it on the Q4 Schedule which should be published next week.

That's not entirely true. I was doing some building code inspections in Ardoris and there are building types that have locked gates that can be bypassed by jumping them. The actual door to the building was also locked, but insecure containers between the gate and door would have been accessible.
