This is another one of the subjects of discussion where Portalarium said one thing and did the other.
There really is no point to the recent advancements on screen, if anything they should be shown on a separate character area sheet.
One patch they just showed up with no real explanation other than here it is I hope you like it because it's in game.
Why not limit things on screen to what 's actually useful or relevant such as buffs/debufs effects and contidions.

I wish it were a buff HUD so I could see my buffs without squinting

Unfortunately, there is no toggle in the 'Interface' menu yet, however, you can follow these steps to remove it:
    1. Open the Options window.
    2. Go to the Controls page.
    3. Scroll down to the bottom and locate "Toggle Task List"
    4. Set up a key or key combination (say Left Ctrl-T)
    5. Click the X to close the window.
    6. Use your key/key combination to turn it off.

Are you talking about the task list on the left or recently leveled skills that come up on the right?

Personally, I like it or at least the concept of providing feedback to know which skills are advancing while performing actions.

I think it unfortunately the way its done puts more of the focus of the game on grinding, and on numbers, and min/maxing.

You obviously need to let players know when they're progressing, but not sure I would have done it this way. It gears the game in a certain direction. But its also one of many things in the game that work like this.

I like using these icons to keep track of "which skills am I training currently?" I also like them for keeping track of when I want to lock/maintain the skill to stop training it.

Having these icons on the right make it extremely easy to cease spending exp on a skill right on the dot - something than can mean the difference in many tens of thousands of available exp pool points when youre leveling in the 90s. The exact moment you gain skill, you can click the tiny icon and set it to maintain, and not unintentionally spend many thousands more using the skill (e.g., combat) while opening up the big cludgy skill menu, navigating to your tree, and clicking the icon on that screen/UI.

I only level 2-3 skills at once (sometimes 1). I also dont play every day, I binge for weeks, and disappear for weeks. When I havent played in a few weeks, I have no idea what I was leveling, and its a PITA to go through the big skills list and find the 2-3 things I have turned to green. The menu on the right lets me know exactly what I was doing last time (e.g., "oh right, trying to get lvl 80 on Strength of Earth").

I do agree there there should be an option to disable these things in the UI. Its pre-alpha/early-access bla bla... really I am just pointing out that these icons have a significant tactical and strategic advantage, which reveals itself better when you dont train too many skills at once and already have a significant amount of exp invested in your character. It only seems annoying really when you train too many skills at once or are a newb and your skills skyrocket to 40 real fast. Again, picture this when youre in the 90s, and things rarely ding to the next level.

This would make sense if the whole game was literally about training and leveling abilities, which it's not. Right?

What is the whole game about, literally?
