What is the current minimum RAM requirement for the early access? 8GB hasn't been enough for loading the game for a few months already.

I recommend 16GB RAM minimum to get it acceptable running

This does need to be 12 at minimum, 8 just does not cut it.

8 works as a bare minimum. I ran it with 8GB for a couple years. It would often suck after awhile, but it was usable, and its even more usable nowadays with the improvements in performance and memory usage.

There was a time when it would run with 8 GB. Those days are long gone.

In my experience it’s the exact opposite. Early on I could barely get 4 to 5 frames per second, now I easily get 12 to 15 sometimes more depending on where I am. Early on I used to get crashes after about an hour of playing, now I hardly ever crash even after hours of play.

Obviously I’m playing on the low-end machine. Other people’s expectations may be higher. Your mileage may vary.

I'm sure that it's gotten better recently. I was talking about a long time ago. There was actually a time when I could run the 32-bit client.

8GB aren't enough for starting the game.
The first loading screen already fills my RAM completely and crashes.

Strange, I have 8GB, and it runs fine.

I have 16 and it starts out right around at 8, then climbs to around 15+ and becomes unplayable after some zoning and time..... take a look at that swap file, you'll find it.

Did you change any settings related to content loading? It feels like the game tries to load the whole content to RAM at once at the loading screen, and I guess it's related to the loading screen "optimizations" of the past releases.

I did play the game fine about 2 years ago (there were a few bugs and framerate issues, but that was just the general state of the game at the time).

That is because your machine is special.

Yet I have been seeing so many people over the years talking about how much less lag and crashing Sota gave them after increasing their RAM to 12GB or more.

Yes, I have seen mine hit 12+ on a regular basis.

I play the game often using a laptop with a Geforce GT 650M without any issues.

The mimimum spec needs to be accurate as over-estimating could be putting off a lot of potential players on STEAM.

I installed the game on an old Asus k52jr laptop with 2nd gen intel i3, ati 5470 and 4gb ram after updating it to 64 bit windows 10. Fastest setting only and no frills but it runs smooth. I was amazed it even loaded up at all :)

Uh, most versions of Win7 only can address 8 gigs, anything more than that isn't used.

Of course the x86 version limit is 4GBs, but all versions of Win 7 x64, with the exeption of the Home Basic version, can address more than 8GBs. Home Premium can address 16GB, and the rest of the versions can address 192GBs. So, it really depends on which version of Win 7 you are running.

I don't think that your GPU meets the min specs for the game. Nvidia 960/AMD 560 is the minimum. Many players suffer from heavy hitching with the game but I think in your case it's your GPU. Also, an SSD drive will make loading scenes faster. Also, the game leaks memory. I have 16Gigs of memory also and have to restart the game every few hours or I will run out of memory.

The minimum specs for SOTA are outdated with the level of optimization that has happened in development in the last two years. I know a lot of people complain about optimization for this game, but the developers have made big strides from where it used to be two years ago.

I can run the game on my laptop:
CPU: Intel Core i5-3317U 1.7GHz (dual core)
    8 GB of DDR3 1600 RAM
Intel Graphics 4000 that is pulling 1GB of ram to use as video ram
    256GB SSD

The biggest help here is the SSD that I have installed. I turn all the graphics setting to absolute low and can play the game when I need to harvest crops or craft or run from town to town. I'm not sure I'd want to do a lot of adventuring, but I have cleared out a bandit instance while on the laptop.

Obviously this is not my go to system. But when configured right, SOTA will run on much lower specs as long as you are not expecting things to look beautiful.

NOW at home I have a much better setup with a pretty high end ASUS ROG motherboard. I am a firm believer that high quality components on a motherboard are critical to performance in today's games or frankly even all the graphic design work I do in my day job. And SSDs are a gamers dream and have been for a long time now.

My home system's bottleneck is the nVidia 750 GTX ti. Again, it works pretty awesome with graphics set pretty high at 1080p which is why I take the minimum specs for this game with a grain of salt. I think the graphics card requirements are set too high and really not necessary. That said, I'm looking at picking up a GTX 1070 in the next month or two. I'm not 100% that it will improve performance significantly, but things simply will look prettier. And I like pretty things.
