Terrain textures low resolution ver. 737

    Playing on fantastic settings.
    Have you lowered the terrain textures since 736?
    Even the distance lod is much lower now.
    I'm a new player, so the location is Highvale.

    Yes I also noticed this. Performance wise, I am happy. But the graphics look so much crappier then before..

    Actually no changes were made to Highvale terrain within the past 6 months. Scenes that receives updated terrain include Brittany maps, Ardoris, and Island POT. Those should look better, not worse. Brittany Central possibly being the only exception because I have some settings wrong on it currently.

    BTW, I did just discover that most of the Brittany maps, Ardoris, and the Island POT were checked in with incorrect Aniso values. That makes the texture blurry at a distance for the terrain. Maybe that is what you were seeing? That will be fixed for R52.

    Yes the textures look blurry. Also noticed a few tree's looking weird, unrendered almost.
    The next time I see such a tree, i'll do a /bug with the exact data. And maybe an extra screenshot. :)

    Ah, trees did get a pass on the LOD distances for many of them. I don't think the "Celery tree" is a result of that but maybe something got screwed up. As for the terrain blurriness in a few maps, that should be cleared up in R52. In fact in R52, many maps will be moved to entirely new terrain system for full PBR rendering and sorry hipsters but that isn't Pabst Blue Ribbon but Physically Based Rendering. :p

    Sounds awesome, that should look good with the light reflections!
    Are u guys planning to also add/support PBTS? (Physically Based Tessellation Shaders)

    I am actually evaluating performance on using PBTS for terrain now. It appears with moderation it isn't too costly or at least doesn't compete with our existing bottlenecks which means it won't slow down performance. However, I don't believe this will make its way into existing maps though because it does deform the existing terrain enough that it can bury some existing details. For instance, if the designer put a board flat on the ground, the tessellation can easily swallow it up if deflection values are set high enough to show any real visual differences.

    I will be adding this to their arsenal of tech for future maps. Gives you even more to look forward to post launch.

    Thank you for your testing and explanation. Cant wait to see PBR in action soon.
    I just hope that the list with tech updates get worked on for after launch and not get forgotten. As my experience has learned that after a official release nothing drastic will get developed anymore. :(

    So is this still going into R52?
    I do not read anything about new terrain system (PBR) in the current R52 draft release.

    that draft is a VERY rough draft and will be added to a lot in the next few days.

    We use the Professional Bull Riding (PBR) for rendering? That’s cool! Where are these bulls in game?

    @Chris - make sure you put extra love on the Island POT 01 template. You know I helped design 1/2 of it. ;)

    So yeah, I checked R52 yesterday and nothing changed with the terrain textures and did not notice PBR. That was disappointing.
