I can't say, or I might get moderated and have to change the spelling again.

Well, I started out knowing that I was going to have multiple characters, as I bought a pledge account with 3 character slots. I wanted them to be seen as related, so decided to give them all the same last name. But before picking that, I had to come up with 3 first names that would all sound good with the same last name.

My original plan was to have all 3 of them have a different combat style that I enjoy the most in MMO's - Tank, Ranger, and Assassin. So, I tried to come up with names that resembled those professions. My first thought was that a Ranger would most likely need high Dexterity to be a great Ranger... so a play on that ended up being Dexxe. Then I pictured an assassin as a dagger wielder and came up with Dirk. Since I started a trend with names starting with "D", I simply changed Dexxe to Daxxe as my Tank type, just because that had a sort of "hardened warrior" sound to it.

So I had my 3 "D" first names and figured I needed a "D" last name to go along with them. The first thing that popped into my mind was Dirk Diggler (from the movie Boogie Nights). I'm not really a major fan of that movie, but I always thought the name would be great for an assassin. Diggler also rolled off the tongue pretty easily with Daxxe and Dexxe too. So now I had my 3 planned avatar names decided. But, since the 3 character slot option was not yet available, I had to choose one to start with.

Through months of pre-release testing, I found that I enjoyed the tank/sword playstyle the best so after a few wipes, I stuck with my Tank, Daxxe Diggler. I joined a guild and my friends list grew quite large, so I didn't want to change the name of my "main" account.

Well before R32 - Persistence - my sister had a SOTA account but decided she didn't like the game all that much. It was a very early stage of the game and incomplete quests, bad performance issues, etc. were the major factors. So, she ended up just giving her account to me. Since Dirk Diggler was sort of the basis for my last name, I decided to choose Dirk Diggler for that account. Now I had 2 of my 3 names created.

With R32 approaching, I was concerned about the land rush and really wanted a pristine NPC town lot. So I went out and found a good deal on a Royal Founder account that had a much earlier selection window... so I bought that account. And so, my final character, Dexxe Diggler was created. Although this technically was my most valuable account, I still consider Daxxe as my "main".

Even though I now had all my intended characters, when they announced the SeedInvest option, I couldn't resist and I purchased one of those as well. Since I had no idea what I wanted the role of that character to be, I figured it might be a mage specialist, or anti-tank... so I simply reversed the Daxxe name and created Exxad Diggler. Not much thought went into that one, but I kind of like it after the fact.

So there you have it, a brief history of the Diggler's. I don't know what I'm going to do if/when they ever give us the extra character slots though. 2 of my 4 accounts are entitled to them so I might have to come up with 4 more Digglers at some point, LOL.

Vas Corp Por is from UO, though I was just 'Roy' in UO, but played several mmo's after as 'Corppor' got to SotA and Corp Por was taken (by a cool guy who became a friend), so added Vas per community suggestion! 'Roy' is from my kali name (if anyone remembers war2 kali) #33 roy, after Patrick Roy, a hockey player.

List Rostov, I love Franz Liszt's music, and Rostov is from a family in War and Peace. I didn't know dev characters showed up as purple, so I played for a good month with what I thought was going to be a throwaway character thinking 'why are all these people asking me stuff' and then realized I was purple. So, I just kept the character and am rolling with it.

My name comes from His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. Serafina is one of the characters, a powerful witch. Witches in that series have bird "daemons" (animal manifestations of souls). Serafina in the book series has a goose, but my daemon is of course a raven.

Chaox was my first character in World of Warcraft, not sure I even intended to keep it at the time but it remained my main character and the name really grew on me due to its brevity.

The Attenwood was a character I wrote yeaaaaars ago for a short story, who appeared as a cautionary myth or legend that could be summoned under special circumstances like Bloody Mary. The "the" was just added flavor because I liked how it sounded, similar to saying "beware the Jabberwock."

In my mind, the character got a bit of renewed life for his role in Novia where he was once a traveler that kept to himself. After being wrongly blamed and violently killed for the misfortunes that befell a town he had visited, he now appears whenever mysterious or bad things happen in the world and marked by a thick fog that follows him.

I definitely had fun with it since so much of my QA role had me popping around unexpectedly to see what bugs our community had discovered. :)

    My previous post was deleted.

Berek chose my names after a lengthy process involving the rejection of UO NPC names and names like "a kitten"

    My in-game name is Elmo.

The name comes from a character I created on a UO freeshard. I wanted a plain, simple name for a hero that had a Medieval twist, and additionally was memorable and could be repeated in renown; so people could spread tales of the famous knight errant named "Elmo" who saved them, or helped them out, or solved a quest, or did other such forms of chivalrous deeds.

While many know Elmo as the ticklish muppet on Sesame Street, the name is actually a short version of Erasmus. There are, which you see for instance in the St. Elmo of St. Elmo's fire, a Will-o'-the-wisp type phenomenon. The St. Elmo here is St. Erasmus of Formia. In Italian, the name is either St. Erasmo or St. Elmo.

St. Erasmus is said to have been put in prison and tortured, only to escape and then be captured again for more torture, several times, and only for confessing his faith.

UO was my first online game ever and I used the name Adnor, which is my RL name backwards. Not original but it was from a set of books my parents had personalized and they named the character with my name reversed.
Years of playing UO and other online games with the name Adnor, my friends kept shortening it to Addy and it stuck. I still keep and have Adnor as a character, she just doesn't get out as much .. ;)

Okay, I'll bite. The names of my (current) 4 characters and where those names come from.

Raven Swiftbow - I was actually looking for an image of a male 'ranger type' character for SotA when I stumbled upon the image I use here in the forums. I was immediately taken by it and the name Raven (for the color of her hair) and Swiftbow immediately hit me. I was surprised that the artist had posted it for anyone to use, so it stuck! (And yes, I am female irl)

Atlara Skeuferyl - This one is more complex. I have a book published irl [ Trail of Darkness which was later revised/republished as Morticai's Luck] and had used Old Cornish as the basis for many of the names I used in the book. Atlara means "rascal" and Skeuferyl means "shadow magician." Oh, and the name is pronounced At-Lair-Ah Skew-Fair-Ell. [Some of my guildmates hate me for choosing these hard-to-pronounce names, btw ] Atlara ran away from home because he didn't want to become an Obsidian mage, like his dad . . . .

Ambrogio Skeuferyl - Ambrogio is the older brother of Atlara, who has no problems with the Obsidians. I chose Ambrogio because, by some accounts (and in some other games which I've never played), Ambrogio was the name of the "first vampire." Ambrogio is my 'dark' character, which is why he is on a separate account than Atlara!

Morticai - this one is straight up - named after the main character in my rl writing. Back in the olden days before I had any intention of writing any books I played D&D. One day I was painting a Ral Partha miniature and suddenly the name, as well as the full personality, of this character popped into my head. No idea where the name Morticai came from! In my writing he's a guardsman (more like the U.S. old western cavalry - they patrol between two major cities) but he had grown up as a street urchin. He's a ladies man, loves to dress above his 'station', and can find trouble like nobody's business. He's the closest thing I have to a Lee...Roy Jenkins. In SotA he's a guard for Falling Waters Fortress. :)

Ah ha! That explains what happened two Friday nights ago during my broadcast at Helen Garriott Gardens @Attenwood! I do hope that night was more "mysterious" than "bad" ;)

I've been known as Retlaw (when available) since 1983, always warrior class of some kind. It's just my name backwards.

Starting in Warcraft I needed a second name and was a fan of the Record of Lodoss War. As my character was to be a magic type Wort seemed like a good match, and have used it ever since for characters of that class.

Lastly, I occasionally play a female rogue or similar avatar. I think I googled random names and found Pythe to be a derogatory slang term which sounded cool and fit the possible background of a thief. I'm also told it was a popular name in some other fantasy series.

I loved those books! The movie also; it's too bad they didn't do the whole series.

Chronicles of Thomas Covenant - Stephen R. Donaldson. Berek Halfhand - White Gold wielder. He saved the Land from Lord Foul.

(Sorry Berek, but I have to keep promoting those books even though the first one came out 50 years ago. I'm waiting for SOMEONE to make movies. They would rival Lord of the Rings. )

'Arlin Greyblade' was the first MMO character I created way back in Ultima Online. I kept using it or variations for various games because why not. 'Lina Greyblade' is one such variation.

Covenant is kind of an unlikeable ******* for the first two books. That's intentional, and essential to the story, but it doesn't exactly lead to widespread commercial appeal. Also it doesn't help that he's a rapist.
