I started in Nov. 2016, and people were already well ahead of me - but players helped me out with some gear and advice, and well - here I am, and I've done the same. I think having existing players to help out the newcomers is beneficial - although from a typical game perspective, I can see how someone new might be intimidated by the idea of how long the game has been persistent... however, SOTA isn't your typical game.

like @Echondas I started late, in fact Sep/Oct 2016.. do I wish I had heard about the kickstarter (how sweet that would have been), of course, do I wish I could have seen it through more, yes. However, does that mean I cant enjoy it now? no..

The way I see it... there will always be that group of elite players with way more time than most others... so they will jump way ahead of everyone else.

If you are NOT one of them, you will never keep up with them (whether there was a wipe at launch or not).

If you ARE one of them, you still may not be able to keep up with them, but you will certainly pass about 75% of the more casual player base within a couple months anyway.

Also, with the way the skills have diminishing returns, at a certain point that elite group will still be gaining more XP over all but their skill increases will take them much longer than yours will at lower levels. So, you won't be able to catch them if they keep pace, but you will have closed the gap enough so that their "advantage" is negligible for the most part.

yep those with no jobs and ability to play 20 hours a day, every day, wins over those who can only play outside hours, who win over those who can only maybe play at weekends, and again over those who can maybe only play at weekends later in the evening..

    just like life.

People have no reason to believe that there wont be people way ahead of them a year after launch. A wipe at launch is a VERY valid expectation. Nothing about that "Makes no sense". I'm NOT pressing for a wipe but the existence of the expectation is totally understandable and its not anything like an expectation of a wipe 2 years after launch. But to say that doesn't make sense is just belittling perfectly valid expectations(of something that will not be happening).

Heck, there was someone in chat last week saying that he didn't pick up the game because he didn't like the Novia overworld map. People have random things they won't play over.

Trust me... this was argued to death and back a few times when they decided they were going to do it. I agree that there should have been a wipe at "launch" for this very reason, but people were tired of it getting wiped every month or so, so they went with the option to NOT wipe. I've always been of the impression that being here, helping to make this a better game and knowing I would already have a minor leg up from the backer rewards I was receiving would be enough of a reward... but more thought differently.

I was hoping the meteor event would be a wipe like how Final Fantasy handled their reboot. The 600+ days of persistence is offputting for new players when they thought they had equal footing coming in at "release". The quotes around release is because i consider persistence release.

The overworld map is a common one... Anyone that cites this as a reason to not play didn't play the original single player Ultima titles.

I don't recall Shroud of the Avatar having ever been a democracy.

Uhh i think you missed his point completely. That there was no wipe prior to launch of EP1. Its doesn't bother me i don't play the game anymore anyway and it was announced there would be no more wipes a while ago. However, i don't think hes asking for wipes every 6 months. Perhaps he was expecting a wipe prior to official launch like most games. That way people who benefited from bugs, and experience exploits as well as various other exploits weren't able to benefit from them. There where people at one point getting million and millions of exp doing next to nothing. I mean i can recall one point with the chest looting at control points where people farmed a ton of EXP and items doing nothing but standing around in a group. Im sure there were much much much more than that, but that's a mute point.

I started playing with persistence... still not got 3 GMs, because most of my time spent was just playtesting stuff, decorating my lots, hanging with guildies, translating the game as volunteer and hence testing my work and doing minor stuff.

The 50's GMs are not a problem, as it has been stated over and over here, there are severe diminishing returns passing a certain threshold and their advantage won't be that much...

And high levels here tend also to help people. Shroud is not exactly a competitive game.

So, just chill and enjoy. There's plenty to do here besides endless grinding. :)

I know coming into a MMORPG post launch and seeing very high level characters is daunting, but it should be viewed from the perception of a challenge and say to yourself, "someday, I will be that powerful".

i think A key reason why a wipe would be badly received would be the fact that sota is one of the few games who support player to player rmt.

Examples. I bought a pot. And a city lot. In a wipe ok they may stay with me. Well now what if I sold in game gold or ore? Specialised request Armor?

While I think there was potential argument for an xp wipe and reset quest items and all Skills. B cause there have been exploits and I believe some have paid heavy prices. Others who knows. However. Port made their choice. They said no more wipe and stuck to it. That’s a commendable thing

Even if it were only a skill wipe, I would be done.

I play to enjoy the game. I'm not in any competition to GM anything or be at the top for any bragging rights, I'll let the younger crowd have their fun with that. Get back into the game and have some fun adventuring.

Cat's out of the bag. Even a skill wipe won't negate the many, many pieces of equipment/deco/houses that were made or gifted to others in the nearly 2 years of persistence. Those crafted stuff will still give people an edge.

The only thing a skill wipe will do is to drive away the very people who've kept SOTA alive long enough to reach the goal of an actual launch. The only time a wipe would have worked was back in R31 when monthly wipes were still the thing. Once R32 hit people played, bought stuff from the add-on store, and crafted stuff based on the promise by Port that all of these would be permanent.

There's no turning back the clock now. It simply can't be done. We just have to live with the fact that there are gamers who won't get into SOTA because a wipe wasn't done at launch.

The backer rewards, in retrospect, turned out to not be so important.
