Hello friends. Today I am going to talk about how to be a Tamer in Shroud of the Avatar.

There is the learning curve of taming an animal or creature. There is also a learning curve of using an animal or creature that you have tamed. Knowing when to help them out. Knowing when to leave them alone in a fight.

Now that you have used my taming guide and tamed a pet from the How to Tame a Creature section at https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/f...ming-skills-2018-03-27-launch-updated.112216/

It is time to see how I use my pets. Everyone will develop their own style and techniques. These styles will evolved over time and will evolve to whom you are fighting against. Think of what I am going to show you as a starting approach and develop your own style.

In my mind there are two types of Tamers:
    - Pure Tamer
    - Ranger/Warrior Tamer

    Pure Tamer
This is the tamer that will use thier pet and strike first. They will assist with pet heals and support them with magic against the target. How I use this style is to have my pet attack the target, then I will use Area of Effect (AOE) spells (Ring of Fire, Meteor Shower, etc) to help damage the target. Use the Root spell to stop the target from coming to attack you and keep them in the AOE area. Plus making sure your pet does not have to run after them much as your pet will spend more time running than attacking.

To attack with your pet first - Right click on the target and select "Command pet to attack target". The pet can take up to 4 seconds to respond and attack. Make sure your pet is on Aggressive by right clicking on your pet and choose that selection prior to the attack, or press the 3 key on your numeric keypad.

If I am attacked anyway, I will run around my "area of spells" to make sure my AOE is damaging them. I use my staff (which gives you -30% magic spell fizzle) to beat them off of me. The staff is a bludgeon and is not a main attacking weapon, but the stuns and knockdown is nice to help keep the target off of you and contained so your pet can attack.

    Ranger/Warrior Tamer
This is the tamer that will use a Ranged bow (Ranger), or Blades/Bludgeon/Polearms (Warrior) as thier primary weapon with the pet as support against the target. How I use this style is to become a tank with my chain mail armor (Warrior Tamer) and my pet will support with attacks while I take the most of the damage. I am also dealing great damage output too.

The Ranger Tamer will run around in a circle and kite the target while firing arrows and directing the target back and forth in the part of my pet. The pet will chase and will hit when the target comes in the line of the pet's attack. The Disabling Shot Ranged attack will help slow down your target(s) - one at a time targeted. Plus other AOE spells will help slow them like Ice Field. You don't want to be hit at all so making the circle run keeps your target close to your pet for support attacks.

Here is a video showing the two Taming classes I created; Pure Tamer and Warrior Tamer. How I use these styles:

    Companions and Spell Summons
The only thing I will say about Companions (offline only) and Spell Summons is they occupy the same pet "slot" so you can have either a tamed pet, a spell summon, or a companion (offline only) out one at a time. You cannot use any combination of two or more.

    Quick Keys
Num Pad 1: Passive = this will make your pet ignore any targets.
Num Pad 2: Defensive = Your pet will only attack your target if you get attacked first.
Num Pad 3: Aggressive = Your pet will attack a random target of their choice.
Num Pad 4: Stay = Your pet will stay in the spot when you tell them to stay.
Num Pad 5: Follow = Your Pet will follow you around.
Num Pad 8: Teleport to my location in the same scene = this is good if your pet gets stuck and cannot pathfind their way to you.
Num Pad 9: Stop Attacking = Your pet will stop attacking the target. Sometimes your pet is so engrossed they won't stop even if you tell them multiple times.

    Damage from your Pet
Here are two snippets with my Obsidian Bear and I damaging a target. Damage from 34 up to 107. What a range!

Coming from Animal Taming in Ultima Online
I too started my taming career in UO way back 20+ years. I still have my UO account open on the Lake Austin shard. Here is how the SOTA taming skills relate to the UO taming skills.

Animal Taming = Tame Creature, Collar Recovery
Animal Lore = Summoning, Combat Training, Concentration
Veterinary = Heal Creature, Resurrect Creature

For a more in-depth look at the skills please look at https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/f...ming-skills-2018-03-27-launch-updated.112216/

I hope this guide helps you in your quest to be a GrandMaster Tamer.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Please let me know if there are any corrections please let me know too. My goal is to keep this updated for every release going forward to be a guide for all new players.

If my fellow Tamers in New Britannia has any cool tips to share, please do in this thread.

    Sincerely,
    Lord Greagoir Pendragon, ONBE
    Duke of Dara Brae

FYI: @Berek if this is good please place a sticky on it and move it where it suits best.

I particularly liked the Drakserker boss fight - it was really down to the wire

That tactic you used against a particular obsidian bear where you stood safely away on top of large tall boulder while your pet tanked looks very promising. I'm thinking of drawing mobs to such an environment so I can engage them with my pet safely.

Great videos, i love them :)
If i hadn't taken taming specialisation again, well i had then dropped, then taken, then dropped but now taken and keeping now for sure, i would have to after watching your videos.

As you rightly say the key bindings are very important and can be changed/bound to something else if needed. By controlling the pet with the key bindings it becomes an extension of yourself quite easily. It takes a little time to get used to but once it becomes second nature a tamers pet is a very useful addition to a Ranged/Warrior Tamer especially. I will add that i don't see the Dismiss key option in your post. I have changed mine to another one so not sure of the original key binding but this has saved my pet many times when the going is just too much and you can likely resummons him with full health if your timer counter is refreshed.

As you said others can post tips here ill add a couple...Some tips from a Archer/Tamer

The Bear is my favourite but as an Archer i find the spider to be more useful in most or at least in situations you are only fighting 1-2 mobs. Reasoning is that the spider can web a mob and this causes the mob to attempt to aggro the spider allowing an archer to get behind and shoot some back shots.

A Bear imo is most useful in a dust up, especially when you are being attacked by multiple or at least heavy hitting archers/mages. By setting the Bear onto one of the range damage dealing mobs it allows you to concentrate on another, also with the bears knockback this also takes some damage of you for a time. If you don't engage the target you have set the bear on then the bear will take aggro as well and as it one of the best tanks in the pet class it should give you enough time to kill other mobs while his target is concentrating on him. I sometimes set him on one Archer and then on another, so he is taking the damage from 2 of them, You do have to watch his health doing this but it is possible to do, leaving you free to engage others.

Also when attacking a high damage dealing enemy like say the mage in Grannus Colossus it is very useful to send the pet to attack and then attack yourself and retake the aggro, this allows a bit of a meat shield against stronger mobs giving you time to get into position or stack a big spell/charge etc.

And...after a hard days fighting, all Bears and Spiders surprisingly like to sit in front of an open fire and nod off. If you look carefully you will see their eyes twitching, likely remembering all the fights they had that day :)
