Not that ths is especially helpful, but my gut feeling is that fire mage builds are pretty good. Mostly based on the videos of that one guy soloing the hard mode obsidian trolls in lost vale or upper tears as a high level fire mage.

Best build for a pve mage is fire life with both the specializations. You have to use the entire fire tree and life tree and you have to add meteor shower from moon.
The attunement you need to raise is fire, life, moon for attack purpouse, Death for defensive purpouse and sun for boost your enlightnement buff and have more int.
Suggested gear is meteoric iron chainmail chest rest cloth and 2 wands or full cloth + wand and meteoric shield.

that dhanas is mainly for AOE farming, The build can vary Depending on what you are fighting at any given time

I mainly want to be able to survive in PVE, and want the easiest build for a mage …. I do not care to run around :) I want to zap at a distance and mass stun everything so I can pick them off 1 by 1 or 2-3 by 2-3 …

ANd ty so much everyone for responding with some good ideas.

You may want to consider a Crossbow or Ranged build.
With Disabling Shot and Ice Field, you can slow most things to a crawl.
You don't need to move much (I know because I've been move challenged before).
I changed to a different specialty because of the stun Reapers/Trolls/Wizards could put on my build.
But I still use ranged for Obsidian Bears and most 5 skull areas with no problems.

I can second the fire / life / moon combo as above for lots of fun AoE madness :)

It depends how you want to play, what the best schools or mixes are. Fire / Life is not the only one and if you want to see more then UT or want to do more then "AoE everything down" you need to learn how to play with fire.
If you like stuns may air magic is something for, also water magic is good due its slow down effect. Bringing sun magery up is useful to have a good int buff.
There is no "this is the best mage build".
I would try every school to find out what best fit your needs.
You need at least 2 schools where damage comes from and sun, moon, life for support.
The school you like most or seems most effective to you is the one you specialize in and the other specialisation may light armour or life.

However a mage is not an archer. So do not play a mage like an archer it is no joy.

As always its nice to have... STR gives you more HPs which helps you survice, also helps Earth magic. Dex helps dodge and Lightning spells.
I wouldnt say they are needed but Id raise the skills to 80 which is not too bad on XP. And if XP is a problem just to 60.

And like everyone else here I echo Fire/Life with Meteor Shower. You may still have a tough time vs some boss mobs that are immune to most magic.

Some of my experiences: I originally tried to have an effective Air build and used Discharge and Chain Lightning for my AOE but had to turn to other schools because I came across mobs that were immune. Even at skill level 40 Corpse Explosion was extremely effective in killing crowds of mobs all at once, but it needed preparation (luring mobs to one spot so they die in a heap) and necessitated luring other mobs to the deadly heap. I never managed to level up Ice Field and the Water tree to a level where Ice Field would be effective. I’ve seen archers easily pick off mobs that were stuck in an ice field and would like to be able to do that some day. Currently I am using Fire and it is far more effective for me than Air, even though my Air Attunement is higher and I had started to specialize in Air. From reading this thread it looks like I should be investing more in Life and Moon as well.

If your goal is to survive in pve life is my suggestion for one of your specialization because you can cast healing ray and healing touch faster and you have 6 gliph of every life skill. About air i discourage you to use it in pve cause the high reagent and mana cost and cause Many mobs don't take too much dmg from it, but if you like you can still use. If you like kiteing i suggest you ice field that slow down Many enemy in the same time and you can stay ranged and fire them.
About fire don't consider it something you necessary need close to your target for dmg it, you can avoid to use fire fist and play with ring of fire and fire arrow.

Im finding success on Obsidian Tortoise with Death, Air, and Focus trees for my main skills. I take some utility from Fire and Water, and plan to level up Meteor Shower from Moon eventually.

Im only at Tier 4 scenes now, but I can pretty much handle 3-4 mobs at once in Penmawyr Island, with stuns from Air, lifetaps from Death, and my skeleton thwacking everything for me.

Really? I find Chain Lightning does massive damage, and occasionally costs reagents. Air spells cost reagents no more often than Death spells do, anyway. My income from looting is always significantly higher than the cost of regs, I can say that much (I basically dont have to pay attention to it).

My only issue so far being death/air/water/moon air being my main spells is that I hit mechanical / liches for 0 damage which I never had any issues killing anything on my polearm char so that is the only thing that bothers me but besides that loving being air.

Ya unfortunately the prevalence of undead makes many skills feel not worth it.
