It's news to me. Maybe I'll get bashed for not knowing it already, but SotA now IS an MMO, something that was denied so often, vehemently.

    Chris Spears on Facebook:
"Actually it is an MMO. Originally we were trying to brand it as “selective multiplayer” but decided that just confused people. We are an MMO that can be played single player online or offline."

So the label changed. I know that a lot of people will take that quote as a way to argue that the devs never really saw the game as a single-player game from the start but, really, that changes nothing.

Pretty sure this has been well known for a while now. Thanks @Chris for clearing up this common misconception.

So basically this is the same as saying pre-release instead of pre-alpha. (Though I think we're technically in alpha now) Absolutely nothing changes from a practical standpoint. Just the language used.

When was it never an MMO? I was under the impression the MMO part was one of three options?

To be honest, I don't know who this person is, but as far as original intentions go, I am fairly sure I've backed a game that made a very simple promise: to find an even balance. To be a story driven CRPG that can be played on servers with a huge amount of players concurrently. When someone just blatantly announces that the deal's changed, I feel inclined to give it the could shoulder unless I hear it from Richard himself.

The quote cited in the original link is gone, though. Or at least I cannot seem to find it. So no. I will not take every single statement some developer makes, for gold. Last time I checked, Richard Garriott is the captain of the boat. And from that direction, all throughout the kickstarter and later in the Q/A sessions that I attended and asked, each and every time I told to feel at ease, rest assured, this will be that amazing Ultima 7ish game that I have always been waiting for. He only ever had few seconds to answer my questions, naturally, but when he did, he made me believe in it, again. I trust in the honesty of that man. I adore that man. So I supported the kickstarter a great deal. I wanted to support -that- specific idea, because then, I was fine with the awkward compromise.

Until this game is finally released, I want to make my voice heard. So I'll keep arguing for a game that isn't just an MMO with the option to play disconnected from any servers. And to be honest, even all the detailed bits and pieces I'd have on my little wishlist, wouldn't ludicrously difficult or expensive to implement. Most aspects that Ultima fans have always been talking about and asking for, don't clash with that online part, they'd easily compliment them. Working on features like that would make the experience a better one for all players.

So no, I hold on to the deal and promise I was given originally. And, I hope that most of you can sympathise. .

Don’t worry. MMO is a meta tag used when searching for games. At least thats all it is to some people.

    It does not define SotA.

All we have here is “fine - call it an MMO, I’m done arguing about. It only leaves you confused”

If people want to call it an MMO. Whatevz.

Now, if they remove selective multiplayer. I’mma throw down.

To everyone who says 'it's just the label that changed':

I am sorry, but there is a big difference if the game is an MMO (or selective MPO or whatever) that has a single player questline that harkens back to single player Ultimas
    OR
If it's an MMO that can be played single player.

That is not just language. That IS a practical difference, quite a huge one I'd say.
