So am going to copy and paste an explanation then add a little more color:

As the eight planets pass through the twelve sections of the sky representing the virtues, the Cabalist(s) whose planets are in front of a given constellation join a siege that is set upon ANY towns that contain Devotionals to that Virtue

So remember, that a lot of the elements in SoTA deal with opposing viewpoints; of antitheses and contradictions. As each of the planets represent a virtue, they also have an anti-virtue. The 8 Obsidian Cabalists each represent one of those anti-virtue. This is why, you can forecast sieges. It gets tricky with POTs with multiple devotionals.

Yeah at Dragomir Mori we are constantly under siege because we have all devotionals.

Well according to Ultima lore, comets do foretell of something foreboding. So it wouldn't surprise me.

    I'm tempted to reply..

You'll have to come to Astronomy Night to find out. ;)

But instead I'll just put out a quick crash course..

The planets are named are the anti-virtues which are also represented by the 8 cabalists. Now keeping this context to my earlier comment. If you used a telescope in Ultima V to look at the sky there were 3 comets. Each of the planets in Ultima V represented a virtue and by extension one of the 8 major towns. The shadow lords would each occupy a town for a time. When a comet was seen next to a planet, a shadow lord would be in that respective town.

The same principle applies in SotA only this time around the planets are the cabalists.. and the towns are represented by the constellations. When a planet is passing a constellation (relatively speaking) that cabalist (of the same anti-virtue as the planet) is laying siege to the town of the virtue that constellation represents.

(Edit: setting aside for a moment that someone already answered the question. :) )

Cabalists are anti-virtues, one for each of the eight. Shadowlords in U5 were anti-principles, and heralded by comets. Could there be super-cabalists on the way, who stand against the virtue system at a greater level? Maybe this is the first of three....

Well you know.. Martian Dreams eluded to the possibility that the Shadow Lords may yet still be around in some form or other. ;) Of course it could have been entirely in the Avatar's head when using the dream machine but... you never know right? ;) (Just throwing that out there for kicks.. )

That text that would show up when a Shadowlord was near, was so damn cool (and terrifying)!

Happy to see they did do that in the Sieges.

I need to play Martian Dreams again. One of the spinoffs I haven't revisited recently.
I would give a pinky toe for a port of all the classic LB Ultima games and spin offs (Underworld; Worlds of Adventure... and yes, even IX) on my Switch.

I think I have all of them? There was an Ultima Collection CD way back when that had 0-VIII and I think both Underworlds but I never got those to work. :p Already had Martian Dreams and Savage Empire (personal fave) so I'm pretty well covered. :) (also have IX of course)

If the company folds and the game has to come to an end, you should destroy it with a big comet. That would be very appropriate :)

Yeah, both wikis have the same info:
    http://ultima.wikia.com/wiki/Comet

"...Over the ages, comets, fiery nebulae, have torn through our skies as harbringers of impending doom. They appeared just before the emergence of the Dark Lord Mondain. They heralded the reign of the Enchantress Minax, and they foretold the impending danger of the hellborn Exodus. Now, while we live in the midst of peace and enlightenment, the comets have begun again.
    - from The Book of Lore (Ultima V)"

Would be nice if they have plans for a major boss/character (or something similar crafted for SotA) or your aforementioned shadow lords. I know SotA is supposed to be around Ultima IV and this current state of SotA is a divergent/alternate reality from after U4, right? Was wondering if they would (or even could) put in some of the next game's stuff, just crafted specifically for SotA incase of IP rights issues.

But I can definitely get behind some major bosses/villains. You have these cabalists constantly waging war on everyone not aligned to their ideals, but never any real ringleaders. The named cabalists seem like part of the top brass, but no clear leader(s). Also, we probably will need more good/neutral factions to somewhat balance out the never ending war. As it stands, it seems the enemy has unlimited troops, resources, and engagements across our section of the world. Maybe the falling star is a new champion for Britannia :)
    Yeah... doubtful :(
