I was poking around trying to find out if full VR support was going to be implemented and couldn't find anything official other than the 2.5 mil stretch goal. Does anyone have a link to the thread with discussion on this?

Personally I have been playing on virtual desktop and messing around with Vorpx in first person with my Vive to scratch the VR itch right now. So no rush, just wondering if it's eventually going to be something that gets done?

I'd assume it's either been scrapped, or put on such a back burner that you will not see it being worked on anytime before a further episode. Again, just an assumption.

Ah well , one can wish. Not asking for full room scale but at least some true VR support for HMD.

Not scrapped. its in the latest news for future. although it sounds like its First Person only with Stereoscopic support. I would love to see this stereoscopic even in non FP view. I pretty sure they decided on FP only because of trees and other surrounding camera objects. not sure :)

Per the Post Episode 1 Plan, this is what you can expect as far as VR goes:

Works fine for me. I've already remapped WASD for use with my Omni.

The best chance we're gonna get VR is when Unity Engine base code start supporting it at this point.

Unity supports VR without any external plugins. Its up to the developer to integrate it to the game and its not that easy, when game is not clearly designed for vr. Maybe view support, but not the controllers. Room scale never.
I would not hold my breath while waiting for a good support for VR.

A lot of stuff was suggested as goals at the time of the Kickstarter to, I believe, simply get people throwing money at the crowd-fund and they'd worry about logistics later. Not a great way of doing things.

And the proof of that is, in the end, they've had multiples of that 2.5 million come into their coffers over this past 5 years, but because we didn't hit it in the KS, they didn't feel obligated to actually do VR.

Lets worry about getting SotA to run at a stable 60fps before worrying about doubling the images being rendered.

This will never, ever happen. 2.5m or not.

The Oculus, VIVE and Android support are just a checkbox click in Unity 3D and Unreal engine

I practiced Unity with my Oculus

Agreed, IF you want to fully integrate VR into the game seamlessly. BUT...
Elite Dangerous just Turned it on with little or no integration. Touch controllers are nothing more then joysticks in that game and poor ones at that and you still have to interact with the keyboard (I peek through the gap for my nose). It works and it looks great to play just sucks interacting with the keyboard all the time. Chat is a nightmare cause I need my glasses.
Skyrim did it with their 2011 game. They put a little more work into it then Elite Dangerous. The menu system is still clumsy and the graphics are from 2006 but its all integrated and works nicely and I play an archer there, pulling arrows from my quiver and shooting them as I gallop by on my horse.

With HOTAS and voice attack, you don’t need keyboard at all in Elite. My hands never leave my flight controls. Hands down best VR experience out there IMHO. Try one of the many voice packs available to automate nearly every ship command - personally I like ASTRA but you can even get an AI version of William Shatner or Brent Spinner if that is your thing. That said, they are totally different games. I don’t think SOTA would work well in VR in its current state - far too much stutter at the best of times.

    Thanks.
I had heard of a few of those but I had adapted pretty well and my real challenge was the chat and mail UI really.
As for now, I have my Federal ship, my Anaconda and an easy flow of cash. I even jumped in recently and bought the Krait which is an overpriced ASP if you ask me. So not much more to achieve there.

The VR is crazy though. I freaked one guy out when I recorded a Youtube of me getting up out of my real chair and walking around my real room. In VR it of course was me walking around the bridge of these ships.

Anyway, nice to see another CMDR o7
