What do you think would help the games population as well as help portalarium achieve thier funding requirements.

#1 and #2 deal with the question of free to pay for eps 1 content with the release of eps 2 and then the purchase of esp 2,3,4 content as the user desires. Using telethons/rewards program and microtransactions as the revenue generator for those people.

#3 is a full F2P model- Using telethons/rewards program and microtransactions (minus esp2-5 expansion) as the revenue generator for those people.

    I would be inclined for a #4

Make episode 1 free to play when episode 2 is released. So there is a "upgrade" path that gives money to Port. Essentially making the trial episode 1.
Will also probably make publicity around episode 2 release.

Thats really the intent of 1/2 with the release of esp 2, knowing they are working on the nue for the next cpl months.

Ill update the original post with this information I just assumed that was implied.

The way it works currently is perfectly fine.

AL 50 and the ability to fully complete one of the three paths is adequate to whet a whistle and help someone decide whether or not to toss down $39 on a full account, plus privilege to kick in on telethons and obtain the telethon rares.

I see no reason to expand that, at this time. Maybe in a few years, when Ep 3 is starting to be worked on...

I think @Spungwa 's idea of expanding the 'trial content' as the game progresses is the best approach.

    Voted no.

Just keep working on the tutorial so that all the new players coming in aren't lost. Then fix the questing.

I tend to think that, of common reasons why people don't play, that the one-time $39 fee isn't it. There's already a free trial to get a feel for the game, so there's no sense in Port losing more revenue for a non-issue.

Unfortunately I don't see Port having the resources to combat the rampant botting and other kinds of cheating that tend to come with remove all barrier to entry. Otherwise I would be for F2P.

Keep the trial as it as already enough freedom and enough time to consider if you wanna buy the full game in the end. The player must buy the game to give port income and a to large f2p trial is gonna work the wrong way.

I'd say this is the number one thing to do to KEEP new players. I left 4-5 months ago because I got frustrated trying to do the broken quest lines. Decided to give it a try again last night with the path of love quest line. At the Spite/ Malice section I was once again faceplanting on my keyboard over another broken quest link and quest line vagueness.

    Voted no.

Likewise Id vote #4 certainly as a marketing option for them to consider, or maybe do it the way uo used to do it and when a new episode hits the shelf buying that unlocks the fullgame, essentially making all early episodes free with the latest expansion.

They still of course would need to charge for the offline game.

The free trial really doesn't have much limitation aside from trading and level limit. It's not much of a barrier to trying the game out, and you can still use the game as a chat room without paying anything. As others have said, fix the new player experience first. Make them want to upgrade to a full account.

I voted no, but that's a "no they shouldn't go out of their way to do it", not a "don't ever do it". I'm sure they have already been considering it as an option, but they're the best ones to know if and when it's a good idea.

As for Ep2, isn't it an industry standard a few months after a new expansion to sell the new expansion both as an upgrade for existing players, and an "all expansions at once" at the original full price? I know that's how FFXI went.

No reason as I understand it is people want new people to buy in.

Yes reason as I understand it is to have lots of new people possibly participating more in miro trans and reward programs.

The community is definently evenly split.

Go check out Arc Games changes to Star Trek Online.

All day long your inventory fills up with "Loot Boxes" that you have to buy Keys to unlock for an infinitesimal chance to get a really nifty and rare Starship that looks bitchin' has awesome stats and is really iconic.

While you play the game the center of your screen will be filled with announcements that XYZ Player just opened up a box and received one of those 'Ultra Rare' ships.

I have a lifetime account from WAY back when, so I get a stipend of "coins" to buy keys with... Even with that... I have probably spent a few more dollars than I should have on coins for keys and after opening... maybe a hundred or more of those? I FINALLY got one of the special ship releases. It's absolutely NOT the ship option that I wanted... I supposed I could sell it on the auction house and see if I can buy the one(s) that I want, but.. ugh...

Anyway, that change by Arc Games made the game FAR less appealing to me. It's great for investors, but it's all about creating that Casino atmosphere. Free to Play games HAVE to do that to generate revenue, it's how they work, most of those publishers bring in Slot Machine and Casino Design Experts as consultants to create that Pull the Lever feel.

As an investor... I would be happy with Portalarium suddenly seeing a massive cash flow by assailing those of weak will with a Casino like experience, but... I would never play the game anymore, because I find that obscenely annoying.

I voted no because I think the trail works for what you describe. Its gives people a good taste before they invest.
