Any suggestions on what shield to use (there are different ones, no?), what enchantments on it / on armour, what skills to use and how to put them to only 10 quick slots?

    Thanks!

P.S.: Now it will be mainly for UT runs...

I can help though I dont play main tank..

Taunt is super powerful combine that with your defensives like glancing blow and deflect. Thats pretty much all you need to do to tank ut, as well as spam taunt and LOS behind the rock so everything comes in. Earth specilization and heavy specilazation will enhance your tanking ablility alot.

As far as your bar you dont really need a lot just to bare bones tank ut, you can make a buff deck for your long term buffs and swap to that for pre buffing strength of earth celestial blessing etc.

As far as gear meteroric plate and shield will give you best survivability.

There isn't a huge difference between shields, because they don't use a lot of materials to make. Imo white iron or constantan bindings are both a lot better than meteoric or bronze bindings though. I think white iron in general is kind of underrated relative to meteoric, particularly on pieces that use many bindings.

I don't play a pure tank, but I usually wear all plate armor, and I recently changed one of my specializations to death just for easy access to death shield. The fizzle mod was more than I realized, and I feel like it was totally worth it, even though that's the only skill in the tree that I use. Even with health% based regen mossy weapons and earth spec bonus avoidance, crystal shield is still outperformed by death shield, at least in my experience. ymmv.

Aside from the advice mentioned above, tanks need some kind of crowd countrol.
Heavy armor skill tree has body slam. Polearms has sweep legs, and bludgeoning may have something, too. Blades has the hamstring combo.

Crowd control is important for catching runners as well as protecting your support members.

What fizzle mod do you speak of? I found death painful where it concerns fizzle as everything increases fizzle, rather than a reduction.

I wish this was more the role of an actual crowd control class, or at least primarily.

Death specialization reduces the fizzle rates of all the active skills in the death tree. Without it, my success rate on death shield was 11% in full plate. Now it's 67%, which is plenty good enough to use without swapping gear. Death shield itself also gets a pretty good duration boost from death spec.

Whether or not it's worth using up a spec just for that is a matter of opinion, but for me personally, it increased my durability enough to solo some content that I couldn't before.

Hey Lazlo, thank you sir I did not read that feature in the specialization.
Admittedly I barely glance at specializations as I assume I have an idea of what they do (since most are pretty straight forward).

My fear is that I don't want to commit to one at this stage, as I am still learning. And the Shadow Knight ideas I had may not pan out(visions of grandeur with a polearm using chain smoking (I mean chain wearing)), with a skeleton pet killing things and then corpse bombing the mobs).
Yet it isn't meant to be my main. I would suspect specialization in pole arm, heavy armor or some strategy would be more effective.

My friend is more the tank with bludgeon, heavy armor, shield, defensive strategy, life magic and some sun magic. I find it hard to incorporate death line for her.

My current build is DPS with double long swords, 50 earth spec, 70 blades spec, so I definitely wont do death, but the concept is not bad. I hope that swapping second sword to some nice shield will do :)

    Hey Alicia,

I am Delarid Darkwood in game, we met at the Boreas Colossus not sure if you remember :) Glad to see you still around!

I am tanking for my group and have what I consider to be a pretty successful setup, I am self taught and always found it hard to find information, so maybe people are doing it better but here is how I work it:

For shields I am using Meteoric. For armor I would use White Iron until you are able to move to Obsidian with your own chips.

I have a lot of decks but my main tanking deck is fully locked and looks like:

Shield Charge, Thrust, Taunt, Rend, Coup de Grace, Deflect, Parry, Glancing Blow, Defensive Stance and Inner Strength.

Always pre-buffing with fully stacked str of earth, crystal shield and flaming weapon. Sometimes poisons.

Here are what I consider to be some of the key skills in my build:

Heavy Armor: Glancing Blow, Inner Strength, TAUNT, Deflection, Hard Headed, Endurance
Shields: Deflect, Angles, Redirection, Shield Preservation, Stand your Ground
Tactics: Healthy, Defensive Stance, Berserk Stance, Fortify Defenses, Train Stength, Parry, Offhand Defense
Earth: Strength of Earth, Sympathy of Stone, Bulwark of Earth, Shield of Crystal

I attune all of my equipment Earth and have +25% Strength of Earth power enchant on my chest, so my Str of Earth is now giving me +55 str. As an earth specialist, your's could go even higher! The higher your strength, the better your Shield Deflect is and the more DPS you do... win win.

This is what it looks like to use:

Sorry for the music, you might want to mute it.

Also for tanking it is often important for you to be the host of the instance (enter first out of your group).

I am still learning myself, and information can be hard to find, but I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

    Hi Delarid!

Yes, I remember you. You were 1 of 2 ppl that helped me through main quest. Fortunately I did not needed more help. :)

Tank and healer are always in high demand, anyone can do DPS.

Thats pretty good advice there! It is interesting, that you prefer to have fully locked deck. But as you dont spam blade skills for DPS it is understandable. So its one buffing deck before combat then switch to this one. You cant switch while in combat, no? Is there some fast switching option (key to switch deck)?

Is rend that good? For its healing debuf and DOT?

Earth embrace is not worth it?

Why its important to enter 1st? For lags? Not doable much on UT ;)

    Thanks!

The point with the locked deck, is that I can 5 charge a Rend or Thrust much faster than I would ever be able to stack 5 cards, and there are many abilities that as a tank you want to have ALWAYS available, so locked seemed like the way forward to me :) I might be wrong and people might have better deck setups, if so, I would love to see them!

Rend is GREAT! It is for the DOT and Agro generation. I try to ALWAYS have 3 rends on my target.

I used Earths Embrace when I was an earth specialist, but without the specialization, the move speed reduction is too much for me to bare. Also have problems fitting it with my locked deck setup.

Entering first wont be needed for things like UT, more for high hit point boss type creatures.. Trolls, Dragons, Liches etc...

    You're welcome :)

Edit: Oh yeah... I do have a buff deck, and you can fast switch to it in combat. I used to do this, but have not needed to since the increased duration of charging my shield and str buff.

I'll tell you that I have a deck ohh so very close to that. I wear chain, duel wield spears, and have death magic fully incorporated into my decks (I use death touch and death field on everything that isn't undead, and Death shield is on my 24/7) It is a possibility thanks to the unmentioned Death magic fizzle chance reduction from Death Specialization. If that is truly your goal, you might want to consider it!
