Crown of the Obsidians were made by the Obsidians, yes? Obsidians were evil? Then why do we use a currency they made and give it value? Why not smelt it down and give the coin a new mark? (I suppose this is in the realm of rp), but for anyone who holds their Virtue true, wouldn't there be a moral inconsistency with using CotOs?

You sir, make an excellent point. As a service, I will take your dirty COTOs and replace them with "Sweet Daddy Fenrus Bucks" , lets say 1 for 1 swap. Ill be standing down at the bottom of the Fall all day tomorrow if anyone would like to come and swap them out.

I was glad they removed the in-game Crown Merchants for exactly this reason. I wouldn't mind still having one or two black-market crown merchants only found in secret places, but they shouldn't be just standing around in the town squares!

Our current currency is gold. Crowns of the Obsidians are just a commodity. A very highly desirable one at that.

Same reason everyone's keen on letting the Oracle all up in their business.

PSA: there is NO ORACLE in Immortal City. We do not live in a surveillance state on the island.

The obsidians are just ambitions and misunderstood.

It’s said in each red-hot Coto was trapped a soul in eternal pain and they were cooled down in the blood of heretics…but most likely these are tales spread by obsidian enemies to disparage the usage of Cotos with the desire to implement a new currency.
In the end I think it is just as @Jaesun already said. Today's official currency is gold and that is what you get everywhere if you buy or sell or loot something. Finding some hidden Cotos is rare but of course there are still some people interested in them out of different reasons…and especially the rulers of this world seems to have an interest in getting them and that would be quite contradictory if this currency would be that evil.
Anyway with the obsidians long gone and just some raiding remains left the Cotos still have a high value even if you see them just as powerful resource for crafting.

You'd have to smelt it down in the Obsidian Forge, right? Its pretty dangerous to go there and use the forge. The value is in their materials, anyway, so if I sold it to someone who was going to go smelt it for himself, it would still be valuable to me.

The weirdest part is all the stuff you make appear with COTOs that you can't get with gold. But that's the magic of the COTO. (Also proves that the Add-On Store is evil, QED)

Well, you could ask the same question about €, $, £ or many other currencies ;)
Who created the ‚evil‘ System of money like we use it? Well, that‘s another question.

What we know about Obsidians is, they tried to bring Order (THEIR Order) out of Chaos, Not caring about the costs...
They used (I asume Chaos) magic to Reach their goal.
They created Elves and Satyrs out of humans. Sword of Midras tells an interesting Story about what happened and why a poor ghost is still waiting in Etceter for her sister...

I think alot of People believed in their good work. Unfortunately Not all People fighting for a good reason are good People ...

    It is, in my opinion!

After Reading the Book I have another Look on Novia. Especially places I didn‘t understand before, like Desolis or Shardfalls :)
I really like it and Even more understand the Story in Game.

Looking forward for Book 2 :)

I wish more of it were in game. I avoided PvP zones early, but after reading the novel, I really wanted to check out the ruins of Opalis.

    It was very disappointing.

When we get seafaring and diving and so on, there need to be Oracle squid 'swimmers' in the waters, watching us there, too.

The Oracle needs to be everywhere, protecting us.
