They all give you some static bonus and they all have a special ability that is activated by typing out the words of power.
    • Heart of Sorrows
      • Maximum bonus: +10 dexterity (depends on your love virtue)
      • Special power: Wave of Sorrows - causes all enemies in a huge radius around the caster to fall down weeping (AOE stun)
      • Words of power: Wast Ylem Gaus Zephyr Presti Obix Hex
      • Required reagent: Tear of Sorrow
    • Bonesteel Crown
      • Maximum bonus: +10 inteligence (depends on your truth virtue)
      • Special power: Cloud of Wasting - drains the life and focus of all around the caster in a huge radius
      • Words of power: Wast Ylem Asen Desen Umbra Nox Corp
      • Required reagent: Gem of Truth
    • Scepter of Dread
      • Maximum bonus: +10 strength (depends on your courage virtue)
      • Special power: Blast of Dread - knocks back and knocks down everyone in a large cone in front of the caster
      • Words of power: Wast Ylem Gaus Jura Hex Exim Xen
      • Required reagent: Elixir of Dread
In order to replace the reagent, you have to go to an automation NPC near that artifact's related colossus. Getting the reagent will incur the decay penalty, which is some small percentage of the total experience you have in skills. If you don't have enough experience in your pool to cover the decay cost then it will be taken from skills. The automation will only allow you to have one reagent of that type. You have to use it before you can get another.

The first reagent will be given to you by the Oracle when you visit her after obtaining a dread artifact.

[edit] The reagent automation NPCs are located at:
    • Tear of Sorrow - Sequanna Colossus
    • Gem of Truth - Boreas Colossus
    • Elixir of Dread - Grannus Colossus

Does the xp penalty still apply? given that they wiped it off normal game play

It's no longer applied at death but it certainly is when you get the reagent from an automation NPC. You can test on QA to make sure.

The unfortunate part of these effects is how it is a One Time thing, requiring to do the colossus challenge all over again to get a second cast. If this would be worked on with a possibility to use the effect more often (virtue hit, max HP/Focus drain, Exp cost, anything really) I would use one of these way more often.

Yeah, the special power is way out of the realm of usefulness.

I had a huge experience pool when I received the elixer and did not notice a change (didn't look). But I did notice one of my skills changed to down arrow for a bit. It was the bludgeon elixer and since my bludgeon skills are all at zero, perhaps this caused something else to go down a little. Don't quite understand a skill loss when I had over 10 million Exp to draw from. In any event, now I have the dread scepter and elixer forever in my inventory because I have no use for it.

I don't remember what the exact percentage is but it would only make sense to you if you knew the exact amount of experience you had invested in skills. The best way to see how much experience it will take is to try it out on QA.
