Encrypt the UDP packets transporting ingame chat. (And Friends xCoordinates)

Please stop posting, this is my feature request and not a thread to get the last word in. You are open to make your own feature requests.

 

I get its what you'd like, but at the same time, its a game.. if this were banking, or containing any real personal data, you'd have a point. However, a game in where fictitious characters wander around a fictitious world killing, harvesting, questing which anyone can access for free.. what specifically are you feeling needs protecting?

 

What he does not understand is that UDP encryption will be so very expensive in performance. He is making a big deal about universal chat. If you do not want to be snooped, then do not chat in universal...

 

If you think you have an EXPLOIT, send it to support, instead of posting to the public forum.

No one has contributed anything of value, just opinions, and falsifications based on misinformation, or a false sense of being correct based on some sort of dumb science of odds.
You are not experts that is evident even in regards to communication you are lost at reproducing the issue or taking blunt information as implying more.
It's quite simple. UDP packets contain plain text game chatter. UDP packets contain friend xCoordinates. I'd like to request that not be the case, and no it isn't performance hindering, to change it.

Listen do your research first before posting nonsense. Have you sniffed the universal chat? Or did you only see your own text on universal...
Because I have been doing some testing and YES you do see your own universal, local chat text in the UDP stream. But you do not find any chat from other players in the UDP stream.
So this states that you can not sniff the chat, you only see what you sent. But nothing more.

Im not sure how you come to the conclusion that additional processing doesnt hinder performance..

Yep. All encryption has some overhead and honestly I don't think it's worth it for a small game like this. There are more important things for the devs to work on. And sure OP, it's your feature request, but since you posted it here you've automatically opened your idea up to scrutiny. Instead of getting angry, why don't you provide a verbose, technical overview of why you think the overhead and development time to implement something like this is necessary. There are several folks (that I'm aware of, probably more) that are in the infosec field and would be delighted to hear your thoughts....beyond "AI profiling bots".

Wishlist is a great place for people to post their ideas, but it's not a vacuum, folks are always going to give their 2 cents because it's the internet.

I don't understand why anyone has a problem with this feature request.

All game traffic should be encrypted.

 

No one has said it cant/shouldnt be a request, but people tried to understand why there would be anything game related that is so sensitive, its a bit like saying your data to your publically visible profile on facebook should be encrypted - if its public, other than your login info, what exactly is there to hide, its public.. , and trying to show the level of work required to achieve it..

I'm not saying there is a problem. It's like, do you drive with your seatbelt on? You're unlikely to need it, and when you do need it it's only a very specific instance that lasts a short period of time. Surely that's not cause for wearing a seatbelt all the time...
