    Game client: SotA.Linux.64.1025.Date.08.02.19

Starting with Release 68, the game client doesn't start. The window appears with a black screen for several minutes, and then exits.

It doesn't appear to be "crashing" so much as "just not starting", if that makes sense - there's no errors displayed on the screen, and the only error I found in the logs is this:

    Code:
WARNING: Shader Unsupported: 'Hidden/Nature/Terrain/Utilities' - All passes removed
ERROR: Shader Shader is not supported on this GPU (none of subshaders/fallbacks are suitable)WARNING: Shader Unsupported: 'Hidden/Nature/Terrain/Utilities' - Setting to default shader.

I don't *think* that error is causing this issue, but it's the only thing that seems to stand out in Player.log. I've included the full Player.log below. After the error shown above, there's 10 more lines of logs, and then the logging just stops:

The black window stays up for several minutes, but nothing is logged, and the client doesn't seem to be using much CPU or memory. Normally, the client (when loaded) takes up several gigs of memory, but in this case, it never gets past roughly a half of a gig (579MiB, to be specific).

The game worked fine with R67, I've only had this problem since R68 was released the other day. I tried removing my ~/.config/unity3d/Portalarium/Shroud of the Avatar directory, in case some setting I had in my prefs file was incompatible or something, but it didn't appear to help - the only real difference was I got a full screen black screen for several minutes, instead of a windowed black screen. Heh.

I've also tried fully uninstalling and reinstalling, with no difference.

Any ideas? Is this a known issue, and I missed it? I checked the release notes, and searched, the forum, but didn't find anything. Apologies if there's already a thread on this. Thanks!

are you launching the game with the launcher or using the game executable itself? try it the other way and see if it works, or at least gives a different error?

and since it's the last line in the file, check the permissions on the ZFGameBrowser binary?

does steam let you do a full file scan? maybe reinstall? try the non steam client?

I'm launching the game via Steam. I've uninstalled/reinstalled multiple times, clearing out all files (e.g., old configs, caches, etc) in-between. I could try giving the non-Steam launcher a try and see if that helps, I suppose.

    > and since it's the last line in the file, check the permissions on the ZFGameBrowser binary?

    Yep - it's mode 755 just like I'd expect.

I get the same results when running the game from Steam, from the standalone launcher, or directly from the command line at /usr/local/games/shroud-of-the-avatar-launcher/'Shroud of the Avatar.x86_64'. I even tried the 32-bit version, with the same results.

While I dont have the linux client, its around the time it tries to do networking I think, any changes in that area for you? new router?

(btw even under windows I get the shader unsusppported and not on this gpu thing)

There's no way the 32 bit client will ever work because it's limited to 3 GB program address space. Otherwise, your system information looks like you should have no problem running the game. Try running it under gdb to see what the error is.

Nope - no networking changes of any kind. I log in (almost) every day - one day it worked fine with R67, and the next day when R68 came out, it stopped working. Other games work fine, and nothing appears wrong with the network.

Thanks for the confirmation that the shader error is unrelated! :)

Yeah, I mostly did it because I wanted to see if it would fail in a different way than the 64 bit client, especially since the 64 bit client isn't getting past <600 megs of memory used. I didn't expect it to work, but I hoped it might "fail differently", if that makes sense.

It probably does not differ, the only thing that it differs is that the tgz does a local extract. And your 100% sure there are no permission issues instead of using the .deb where it installs into your root filesystem.

Try changing the launcher argument and add -force-vulkan

Great idea! And it helped me narrow down the problem and figure out a workaround. TL;DR, the standalone client was still using Steam (initializing steam libraries), and something about that integration (or Steam itself) is/was borked on my system. Rebooting (again) and making sure Steam wasn't started at all allowed the standalone client to start properly. Thanks!

    More detail:

Okay, so I did that. The first time it hit a breakpoint is when Player.log gets to here:

    Code:
OPENGL LOG: Creating OpenGL 4.5 graphics device ; Context level <OpenGL 4.5> ; Context handle 39805352
    Begin MonoManager ReloadAssembly

And here's what GDB had to say. Note - I think this is unrelated to my issue.

    Code:
Thread 3 "Finalizer" received signal SIGPWR, Power fail/restart.
[Switching to Thread 0x7ffff0b84700 (LWP 3968)]

26 ../sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/sigsuspend.c: No such file or directory.

I kept continuing until the window launched with the black screen, and Player.log got to the same place, etc. At that point, gdb just sat there for several minutes (just like the client), apparently doing "nothing". That looked like this:

    Code:
Thread 3 "Finalizer" received signal SIGXCPU, CPU time limit exceeded.
    0x00007ffff7ac9b36 in __GI___sigsuspend (set=0x7ffff15caca0) at ../sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/sigsuspend.c:26

    Continuing.

Finally, after several minutes, it failed (closed) like it has been doing, and gdb popped up with this:

One thing I found interesting is that it's still accessing ~/.steam/linux64/steamclient.so, even though I'm launching the standalone client from the command line. Also, when I search for "../common/pipes.cpp (770) : Assertion Failed: fatal stalled cross-thread pipe", the first several hits suggest that's a Steam problem.

So, I rebooted (again) and made sure *not* to start Steam at all this time. I went back to the command line, with nothing else open (no Steam, no browser, no nothing), and launched the standalone client from there.

    It worked.

The following (new) messages were presented to stdout:

    Code:
    [S_API FAIL] SteamAPI_Init() failed; SteamAPI_IsSteamRunning() failed.
[S_API FAIL] SteamAPI_Init() failed; unable to locate a running instance of Steam, or a local steamclient.so.

And Player.log went on past where it was hanging, to show this:

    Code:
Setting executable permissions for /home/chrism/sandbox/sotalauncher/StandaloneLinuxUniversalPatcher/Shroud of the Avatar_Data/Plugins/ZFGameBrowser
    Pathfinding: Init
    Steam Initialized: False
    requesting resize 1920 x 1155
    resizing window to 1920 x 1155
    Desktop is 1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz
    AI Behaviors Preloaded
    AssetBundleManager.LoadResource, Excessive load time, AssetId=Path=Assets/PortResources/Misc/TweakValues/GlobalTweaks.asset, Total=3

So, this appears to have something to do with Steam, or perhaps my Steam install, or something like that. I'll start troubleshooting in that direction.

At least now I appear to have a workaround, so thanks!

The standalone client (without) steam also tries to load a steam library. It always fails on my system as I do not have any steam.
So not sure what the exact issue is with your system.

Either way, if you installed steam through the package manager. The steam libs are in your system library preload path. So they would also be asked to be used before the local steam lib. Even when not launching steam after a reboot.

Anyhow, happy you got it fixed :)

Fixed and working now, both with the standalone client and with Steam.

I moved the ~/.steam/linux64 directory out of the way, and Steam re-created it. With files that have the exact same checksum, permissions, ownership, etc. And it worked.

Thanks again for your assistance, all!
