Just noticed this - but there is no visual indication/feedback for "World Items" that can be used without penalty, vs. those that attempting to use them will result in taking (stealing) them - using either the default "E" key to interact or double clicking.

    For example:

    - a new player at a tavern, using E or double clicking the candle marked as Private Property:

    result:

Same visual feedback on the item (Red Reticle/Private Property) , same double clicking or using "E"

This is my most hated thing about SotA. IMO, there should be absolutely no way so accidentally "steal" an item. The only way you should be able to take something that would be considered stealing is to deliberately drag it to your inventory. Any other mechanism is complete bs.

i think this is a matter of "things shouldn't be marked as private property if you can't take them." are you capable of stealing the candle?

I can take the candle by dragging it, yes.

ah, that's a surprise. still, it might be easier to turn that off, so nothing that can be used can be stolen. would that affect anything other than lighting?

Maybe? I'm surprised I never thought of this before.

    Here's a video example

Here's how I think it should work:
    • Get rid of the red cursor.
    • Keep the popup that says the item is private property.
    • Interactable items get the green cursor back!
    • All other "private property" items get the standard gray cursor.
    • You can no longer steal an item by using the interact hotkey or double clicking it.
    • In order to actually steal an item, you must deliberately drag it to your inventory.
    • Once you drop the item in your inventory, you are then presented with a message that reads "Are you sure that you want to steal this item?". Confirm by clicking "Steal it!"; Cancel by clicking "Cancel" or pressing escape.

I think this is actually a bug, the same one I mentioned a while back about accidentally stealing. In the OP's example, the person hitting E SHOULD have gotten the Loot box with a "Steal" button -- that's usually what happens. It should NOT automatically steal it even if you're double-clicking or using E.

This could cause a problem for people using the keyboard as their primary gameplay method (either because they're on a laptop or because of disability issues). Might be a small group of people, but it wouldn't be necessary to exclude them (from a career as a thief :) ) if the box just popped up properly.

Books and notes are the thing that immediately come to mind, that need to be used without being stolen.

They could also add a right click menu item to steal the thing if that's really an issue.

This is a long-time issue for some of you. Appreciate your sticking with it. I've added an issue #65731 for review.

Sorry for the necro, but I seem to recall that you can steal candles by right-clicking and using the menu. It took me a long time to discover this. But of course that won't be by accident.
