This guide will detail the exact steps in order to fully complete all the quests within the Highvale Outskirts. You are free however to do any of these tasks in any order you wish. I am just providing one compact efficient way (in my opinion) to do all of these.

You can run to the Highvale Outskirts at any time to begin doing the quests here at any time.

Of note: The Highvale Outskirts is not where you start the Chapter 1 Main Quest for the Courage path. The quest item needed to start that is found at Highvale (if you are a new player, when you go to Highvale, it will be called Battle of Highvale). The wounded knight who is at the beginning of the Battle of Highvale will give you his amulet (Gawain's Amulet of Testimony).

If you are a new player to Shroud of the Avatar, it is highly recommended you finish all 3 Outskirts areas because you will receive some gold as well as a decent pool of both Adventure and Crafting XP to help advance your character.

This isn't something that actually needed to be done, however, many new players may be unfamiliar on how some very basic things in Shroud of the Avatar work. Like having to scroll through a list of keywords to find the exact keyword to complete a quest. And various other things.

This guide will be in 4 parts, and will be organized in the most (in my opinion) efficient way. This guide will also start as if the player has finished the Battle of Highvale area (you need to go there anyways to start the Courage part of the Chapter 1 Main Quest).

If you are a completely new player to Shroud of the Avatar, use the https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/map and find the Highvale area. This will show you where to go and enter the Battle of Highvale scene.

The information in the guide was last checked and verified in Release 79 Patch 1250.

    Part one - Monastery

After finishing the Battle of Highvale, you will arrive at Highvale Outskirts. You will see a guard. Speak to them and they will immediately ask for your name. Click your name at the bottom left. Click the name keyword and they will give you their name (Horatio). Click the job, Obsidian Elves, Courage and then help keywords. Receive the Obsidian Elf Sniper task. Click Goodbye.

At the top of your screen in your compass, will be several blue magnifying glasses. These are indicators that tell you in general where to look for a task. Follow any of them and look for an Obsidian Elf Sniper. Kill them and take the Elf Sniper Bow. Go back to Horatio and speak to them.

Click the obsidian elf bow keyword. Give them the Elf Sniper Bow. Click the help keyword. Receive Speak to Captain Burnes task. Click yes and receive the Formal Courage Salute emote. Click goodbye.

Follow the road north east and head to the Monastery by taking the elevators up.

After taking the 2nd elevator up, you will arrive at the lower part of the Monastery. You will see a female Highvale Guard standing next to a wall. Speak to them.

She will immediately ask for your name. Click your name at the bottom left. Receive Speak with Gilbert task. Click the name keyword. She will give her name as Lieutenant Simone. Click the job and then help keyword. Receive Bedrolls and Wheat Sacks task.

To the south you will see a Combat Merchant (you will also see a blue marker at the top of your screen for this person, as well as other markers). Speak to them. Click the name keyword and they will give their name Gilbert. Give them your name if you wish. Sell the unwanted items you have on you to them and click Goodbye.

Go up the circular stairs near Simone. Look for the Highvale Guard Captain and speak to them.

He will immediately ask for your name. Click your name at the bottom left. Click the name keyword. He will give his name Captain Burnes. Click Goodbye.

Head out of this building to the south and stop when you see some stairs leading up. Go up these stairs to the top. At the top of the stairs is a Mystical Looking-Glass. Get close to it and a new task Ask About Looking-Glass is received. Move away from the looking-glass (when you stand near the looking-glass you will keep taking damage from it, so move away from it quickly). Go back down the stairs.

Head out the door to the south. To the east is another building. Go inside there.

Inside you will already see a woman named Esmeralda. Speak to her. The Ask About Looking-Glass task will complete. A new task Ask About First Step is given. Click the first step keyword. Receive the Collect Frostgeist Skull task. Click the elven herbal tea leaves keyword. Receive Get Tea Leaves task. Give her your name if you wish and click Goodbye.

Go to the building located here
    [IMG]

Go downstairs and a Frostgeist will be there (or will respawn soon if someone already killed it). Get the Frostgeist Skull. Go back to Esmeralda.

Speak to Esmeralda and she will immediately ask for the Frostgeist Skull. Give that to her and receive the As About Step two task. Click the step two keyword. receive the Use the Mystical Looking-Glass task.

Go back to the looking-glass and double click on it. You will enter a room with many more mirrors and receive a new task Talk to Esmeralda. Go back and speak to Esmeralda.

The Talk to Esmeralda task will complete and a new Ask About Step Three task is given. Click the step three keyword. You are given the Get Elder Frostgeist Skull and Get Frostgeist Hexa Core tasks. Click goodbye.

Exit this building and go to the area that has all the crafting tables. Speak to the Crafting Trainer. Click the name keyword. They will give their name Marissa. Click the resource gathering keyword. Receive the Resource Gathering task. Click Goodbye.

As you go through the Monastery area, keep an eye out for silver nodes and harvest them. You are going to need 3 of them. The rest you will find later.

Part Two - Outside the Monastery

Go out of the Monastery using the elevator and go all the way down. You will see a blue marker on your compass named Search For Elder Frostgeist and go toward that by following the road there. Along the way there, kill Obsidian Elves as you want to find 1 Nightshade (usually from the magic using ones). And also look for Elven Herbal Tea Leaves.

    At this location:

Follow the road to the south east until you find a Hunters Cabin. Go up the stairs. There may be a Hunter outside or inside. Talk to him. He will immediately ask for your name. Click your name at the bottom left. Click the name keyword. He will give his name Sven. Click the help keyword. He will give you the Sven's Blue Beast task. Click Goodbye.

Right outside the house is a blue Glowing Blue Beast. Kill it and retrieve the Rogue Kobold Frostgeist Skull. Go back and speak to Sven. He will immediately ask for the Rogue Kobold Frostgeist Skull. Click the Plate Helm of Courage, enchanted copper ore and copper golem keywords. Recieve the Enchanted Ore for The Courage Helm task and the Unwearable Plate Helm of Courage. Click the help and animal hides keyword. Receive Get Special Animal Hide task. Click Goodbye.

We now need to wait until it is dusk. So go around killing Grey Wolves and more Obsidian Elves until dusk. When killing Grey Wolves and Small Grey Wolves, you might find a Special Animal Hide when skinning them. You can only carry one of these at a time but can turn these in every time you find them to Sven for a reward.

Once it is dusk (or night time) Follow the blue marker for Search For Elder Frostgeist and go inside the area.

You will come across a ranch named Six Point Ranch. You will also see several NPC guards battling the various creatures in this area. Feel free to let them help you or not. You need to either find an Elder Frostgeist creature OR Elder Frostgeist corpse. The first Elder Frostgeist corpse you loot should contain the Elder Frostgeist Skull. Now look for a Frostgeist Hex creature and kill it or a Frostgeist Hex corpse. The first Frostgeist Hex corpse you loot should contain the Frostgeist Hex Core. If you don't find the Elder Frostgeist Skull or Frostgeist Hex Core just keep attacking both these types of creatures until you find them.

Look at your compass and follow the blue markers that are labeled Enchanted Ore for The Courage Helm. Of note for very new players, this guy might be a little tough so be prepared. Find the Copper Golem and kill it. Find the Enchanted Copper Ore. Head back to the Six Point Ranch.

Look for the blue arrow marker labeled Refugee Supplies and go into the home where it lead you too. Inside you will find Refugee Supply - Bedroll and Refugee Supply - Wheat Grain. Grab 3 of each (you can only have 3 of each). Return back to the Monastery and take the elevators to the top. Along the way back, keep killing elves and Grey Wolves. If you have found a Special Animal Hide go back to Sven and speak to him. Click the animal hide keyword. You can then hand it to him. You can continue to repeat this every time you find one, but you can only carry one at a time.

Part Three - The Monastery and the Mystical Mirror

At the Monastery speak to Captain Simone. Click the help keyword. Give her the Refugee Supply - Bedroll and Refugee Supply - Wheat Grain (3 each). Click Goodbye. You probably have a bunch of useless loot on you sell it all to Gilbert. Go up the circular stairs to Captain Burnes.

Speak to Captain Burnes. Manually type the word help and press enter. Receive the Sever The Obsidian's Head task. Click Goodbye. Go to Esmeralda.

Speak to Esmeralda. Click elder frostgeist keyword. Give her the Elder Frostgeist Skull. Click the frostgeist hexe keyword. Hand her the Frostgeist Hex Core. (two new tasks are given to you, just ignore them, they are cleared next.) Click final step keyword. Receive the Find All 4 Ghostly Echoes task. All 4 of these Ghostly Echoes are now marked on your compass.

Go to the crafting area and speak to the Blacksmith Crafting Merchant. Speak to him. Click the name keyword. He will give his name Milton. Click the enchanted copper ore keyword. Give him the Unwearable Plate Helm of Courage and Enchanted Copper Ore. Receive the Plate Helm of Courage. (Optional) Click the Upgrade Weapon keyword. This will require you to go to Resolute to complete. Click Goodbye.

Leave the Monastery and take the elevator all the way down. Go to this location here to head to a Fisherman's Cabin.

Around this area you should spot some walking undead zombie named Bogman (if you don't find him around here, he will probably be near the next area we are going to go to). Take the Bogman Arm. Receive the Deadly Arms task. From the Fisherman's Cabin, jump into the water and swim southeast.

You will see an Island and a Kobold. Make sure you have no AOE's like Immolation on. Go to the island and speak to the Kobold Caster. They will immediately ask you your name. Click your name on the bottom left. Click the name keyword. He will give his name Nach blg. Click the help keyword. Receive the Wet Works task and the Ice Barrier Key. Click Goodbye. If you have not found the Bogman yet, look to the south east area and he might be there.

Also to the south east, you will have a blue marker named Search Here for Ghostly Echo? Go toward that marker. Find the Ghostly Echo and stand near it. A message stating you have found a ghostly echo will appear. A new task Ask About Ghostly Echo will appear*. Completely ignore that. It is a bug and should not be appearing. Head Back to the Monastery.

Go to the top of the steeple to the Mystical Looking-Glass and double click it to enter it. On the south wall is a Mystical Looking-Glass. Double click it. You appear in one of the houses located in the Six Point Ranch. Exit the house and turn south east. You should see a Ghostly Echo there. Go towards it. A message will appear that you found another Ghostly Echo. Turn south west. Look for another Search Here for Ghostly Echo? marker on your compass. Go towards it. A message will appear that you found another Ghostly Echo. Go back to the house in Six Point Ranch that has a Mystical Looking-Glass and double click it to enter it. Return back to the room of mirrors. Turn north east. On the north east wall are 2 mirrors. Double click the one on the right. This will take you to a small shack.

You will now see the last of the 4 Ghostly Echos. Speak to them. Click the offering, Captain Burnes and sever the bonds keywords. You will receive the Ghostly Echo Essence. Receive a new task Tell Esmeralda of Ghostly Echo.

Look for the blue marker Obsidian Elf Commander. Go to them (they are in a tent) and kill them. Get the Obsidian Elf Commander's Head. Exit the tent and turn south east. Look for a marker Search Here for Master Woodworker? and go toward that. Find a Hermit and speak to them. Click the name keyword. They will give their name Montgomery. Click the bogman arm keyword. Give him the Bogman Arm. Receive the Bogman Club. Click the help and meditation keywords to learn an emote. Click goodbye.

Go back to the cabin. Double click the mirror. When you enter the room of mirrors turn east and click the mirror in front of you. This will take you back to the Monastery. Go back to Captain Burnes.

Speak to Captain Burnes. He will immediately ask for the Obsidian Elf Commander's Head and give that to him. Click goodbye.

Speak to Esmeralda. Click the ghostly echo keyword. Click the final step keyword. Receive the Get the Geistesser's Skull task.

Before you attempt to kill the Geistesser, make sure you are properly prepared. And then head to the steeple and double click on the Mystical Looking-Glass. When you enter the room of mirrors, look for the Large Mystical Mirror that is on the floor. Double Click it to enter it.

When you enter make a specific note that there is a mirror on the ground. This is how you will leave the area. Go forward and kill the Geistesser. Retrieve the Geistesser Skull. Receive new task Deliver the Geistesser Skull. Go back to the mirror on the ground that was on the ground when you entered and double click it to return to the room of mirrors. Face the east wall and click the mirror on the left. This will take you back to the steeple. Go back to Esmeralda.

Speak to Esmeralda. She will immediately ask for the Geistesser Skull and give that to her. receive a new task Talk to Captain Burnes. Click Goodbye. Go to Captain Burnes.

Speak to Captain Burnes. Click the inform burnes keyword. Click which ever response you feel is the correct answer to this situation. You will receive the Banner of Courage and have now finished the Main Quest for this area. But we have 2 more things to do....

    Part Four - Unfinished Business

This next part is going to take a bit of time to complete, but (in my options) has one of the most fun quests in the game.

You will see on your compass (and map) a blue marker with the location of Nach blg's Book of Magic. You can just run right there and kill everything there and go get it, or follow his exact advice as stated specifically in the journal. There's another blue marker labeled Abandoned Mine. You will need to get to this location. From the island that you find Nach blg, follow this path:

Keep also in mind, we still need 3 Silver Ore and 2 Citrine Fragments, which you can also find in this area. You should have already found at least 1 Nightshade. So just keep this in mind.

Follow the path north all the way until you see a large blue crystal on the ground. Go out of combat mode and double click on the blue crystal if you wish. Go inside the doorway and follow the path. You will enter the mining area with railroad tracks on the ground. Head north east and you will see a chest. Feel free to loot that. Follow the path to the north west. You will finally see a ice column that is emitting a blue field. Keep your distance away from the ice column and field until you are ready to proceed, as getting close to it will cause you to take damage. Also make sure to not have any AOE spells on you like Immolate.

Once you are prepared, go forward and quickly double click on the Ice Column. The blue field will now be gone. This field will now be gone for a limited time and then will turn on back again. Go forward but ensure that you stay out of range from the Kobolds, as someone has decided to give you a little help in getting his book.....

Get out of the range of the blue field and allow the Waterdrop Golum's to distract all the Kobolods. Follow the blue marker to Nach blg's Book of Magic and go inside the tent that has this item. Quickly grab the book. There is also a chest here, and feel free to loot it. A new task, Return the Book to Nach is given.

Run out of the area, or feel free to kill the Kobolds with your new allies.

Follow the blue marker labeled Kobold Caster Task: Wet Work in your compass and go back to Nach blg, and speak to him.

Click the nach's magic book keyword. Hand him the Nach blg's Book of Magic. He will give you a copy of the book named Paq Toj Nach Blg (Nach blg's Book of Magic) that you can place as a decoration.

Head back to the Monastery. By now you should have at least 3 silver ore, 2 citrine fragments and 1 Nightshade. Take the elevator all the way to the top and go to the area with all the crafting stations.

Go to Marissa and speak to her. click the resource gathering task and hand her the 3 silver ore, 2 citrine fragments and 1 Nightshade.

And congrats! You have now finished every single quest in this area! Of note, you can continue to explore and find many other various things in here, but I will leave that for you to discover on your own....

There IS one more quest in here involving Hyla, but when I have to time to confirm and verify that information, I will add it to this guide.

Do note, this area will still have a Quests Available showing when you look at the areas listing in the World Map, because the Tea Leaves quest can be repeated.

There is one other "fun" thing you can do in this area. This isn't actually a quest (it's more of a discovery you can find for yourself) but something fun to do.

    Go to this location.
Read each of the descriptions on the door. See a sequence. Death, Earth, Fire Water.

You will need to find 4 Rune Stones and activate them in that exact order.

Head back to the entrance of the Two Stone Crypt, the door is now open.....

Enter inside and see what awaits you....

This is personally my favorite Outskirts area in the entire game. It is beautiful, and features a lot of varied level creatures. As well as my favorite quest in the game (Wet Works). As a completely new player who has no clue at all about the combat system, this area offers a great way for you to discover and learn how the combat system works.

Now feel free to continue on to Resolute or go where ever you wish to go. That choice is up to you...

Or you could just harvest the nightshade. True, you have to find it when it's ready to harvest, but that still seems a bit more reliable to me than just hoping it randomly drops as loot.

It's possible to complete Wet Works without going through the Abandoned Mines! Yes, the mine trail is the Proper and Approved way to do it, but I was getting Unity crashes every single time I entered those mines, so had to find another way. And a frontal attack on the kobold camp -- guys who are just minding their own business -- isn't my style either. I was SO thrilled to be able to actually sneak in and out of the camp, as a low-level character, without fancy stealth spells or gear, just by using my brain and the environment.

Which is why I completely don't understand the point of these guides. Hints for stuck spots is one thing, pointers to out-of-the-way, easily missable quests is one thing, but I'm completely boggled why anyone would want this kind of hand-holding. Where's the thrill of exploration and problem-solving, of actually accomplishing something on your own?

Oh, I know people DO want it, and they're probably equally boggled by my desire to live in a multiplayer world without interacting directly with other players. To each his own. But still, I just... don't get it. Humans are weird. *is perplexed*

Highvale Outskirts still shows "Quests Active" however I cannot find anything on my Journal that I have not completed.
Mirrors, gates, supplies, book, caves, etc. done.
I have read through the guide so many times, cannot find what I need.
So I am lost. Who do I check for the deed?

At the bottom of the guide is a Bugs section. I did already mention this bug in that section:

*When finishing all quests in this area, when you are walking around on the World Map, and move your mouse over the Highvale Outskirts area, it will still state Quests Active/Available.

Currently, this is bugged and still shows as Quests Active/Available. I have reported this on the bug forum. At this time, there is nothing you can do until this is fixed. But if you have done everything stated in this guide , you have probably finished everything.

IF you have never gotten your one free Player Owned Town Row Lot Deed yet (you only get ONE of these per account), and have the Banner of Courage, speak to Captain Burnes and look for the deed keyword and click that or manually type the word deed in the dialogue window and press the enter key.

Just let me know if you have any more questions?

One edit here my friend and only because I just did it, lol. :p

Horatio the guard gives the formal salute and you literally need to type: "formal courage salute" for it to trigger. Or at least that's what I had to do. :D

Did you do the bow quest for them?

Or I’ll assume you possibly came back here to get this emote, you possibly missed it?

I can't remember if I did the bow quest tbh. I had finished all the quests available, got my banner, etc. but realized I was missing that emote, so I went back for it. Maybe Horatio gives it only in that specific instance.

The Hyla quest is not currently in my guide, because at the time of writing this, a change was going to be made to that. And currently, I haven’t had the time yet to check, confirm and verify all the steps on the Hyla quest currently. When I do, I will add that part. I probably should make a mention of that though.

I got stuck on Captain Burnes's Obsidian Commander's head-quest. I first handed in the quest "Inform Burnes" and now he won't accept the elf's head anymore. Is there a keyword to make him accept it?

Try speaking to him again. As long as you actually have the Sever The Obsidian's Head task he should ask for that head immediately on speaking to him (or that is bugged.....).

Yes, I still have the quest. I had it open while talking to Burnes to try some of the keywords in conversation. And I've been back to him 3 times now..... so dang, broken.

Stand next to Burnes and in the chat window type /bug and report that. A guide on how to report bugs is here: https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/forum/index.php?threads/how-to-post-a-bug-report.160311/

Make sure you always use the /bug command to report bugs.

    That sadly seems broken. :(

One more thing you might try is to completely log out and close the game and try again?

Very nice! Thanks for making it. Some quick notes on the bugs:
This should have been fixed long ago. Is it still happening? Does anyone have specific "/loc" coordinates where this happens?

    I'll fix this today.

There are repeatable quests in this scene that will always be available.

@Sannio I have some free time now and will check some of the issues I reported in here. I’ll do a bug report if I still find them.

I know the over-loud sound on the breaking floors was still happening earlier this spring. Hard to test unless someone else is in scene breaking the floors, but I'll be sure to report it if I run into it again.

    Thanks for checking.

The specific location of the source of the scene-wide wound is important. The sound for the breakaway platform was changed at the source so they should have all picked up that change. It's possible there's a specific breakaway platform that has custom settings and didn't pick up the changes, or maybe there is some completely different object making the sound.
