I agree with Sara and others on just how much of a NON ISSUE the actual acquisition and sale/use of these books, but the other side of this argument has a valid worry that Violet has hit on. Someone else has compared this to EvE Online and their mechanic for acquiring and selling XP, but really, it is a complete apples-to-oranges comparison, because in EvE, your skill points are acquired strictly through time the account is actively paid for (one way or another). You spend a year "learning" a skill that makes use of your maximum trait capabilities, and then you extract it and sell it. There is no real way to speed this process up any more than that. Here, because of xp pooling, it would take almost no effort for those with characters that are high enough level-wise to allow them to truly create a pay-to-win environment.

If this is as far as that rabbit hole goes, fine. The books are a non issue, period.

If it is toeing the water on Port/CN's part, then this should end now.

You could possibly make the xp books no trade, but could be packaged individually with a small coto cost to package them?

    Well, that's kind of relieving.

A game selling an item to make it so people don't have to play their game.

Honestly, loot has always sucked in SotA. If exp books that players can trade to each other helps spice up loot then that's a good thing. Its not any different then selling artifacts imo. Now, if Catnip started selling exp for $$$ on the crown store I'd uninstall and never play SotA again, and I've been here since the beginning. Luckily, I can't imagine that's going to happen.

Something I would be good with in this regard is Port taking a page from the EvE playbook on this:

Allow xp transfer via some items that must be purchased with crowns, perhaps with the names Aetheric Essence Transference Chair (lets player using it drain xp and package it for sale/trade) and Aetheric Infusion Tubes (consumable that needs to be "loaded" into the chair)?

Both the player wishing to fill the tubes (max 500k xp per tube), and the one wishing to use them must own a transference chair (or have access to one). Player A uses their chair to extract XP from ALREADY LEARNED SKILLS (Adventurer or Producer), and then player B uses their chair to infuse the xp into their pool. The amount loaded into the tube is constant, but the benefit the receiving player gets from the infusion is variable, decreasing based on Adventurer or Producer Level of the receiving player:

    • Up to level 30: 100% transfer
    • Level 31-50: 90% transfer
    • Level 51-65: 75% transfer
    • Level 66-75: 55% transfer
    • Level 76+: 25% transfer

The level gates are just something pulled out of my backside, but you get the idea. It would force the players using this to purchase items from port to make the mechanic available, and limit its usefulness in creating god characters from inception.

Just a thought that might give port some framework to make this move forward in a way where abuse is limited.

Of course, if you're leveling a new toon, the books could get you up to 80 fairly quickly.

But otherwise, yeah, it's kind of a non-issue. I think the more outrageous thing was from this thread, which seemed to indicate there was some discussion/musing by Chris about being able to package up and sell xp from your pool. Maybe I'm reading it wrong, or maybe the OP was referring to these books in an inexact way, but if accurate that'd be a hard no.

I don't thing anyone is talking about taking the XP on your toon and selling/giving it to another. That's a non-starter, as it has all the problems of the shared pool they just took away. What people are talking about is the XP-items that appear in bags. Possibly making the ones that appear on matic work the same way.

Ohh no, I can garantee you, I, and possibly some others, are talking about taking the xp on your toon and selling/giving it to another. What I have mentioned multiple times now is A. There has been a rumor about Chris possibly talking about this (The packaging of pooled exp), which could be false, but still has been rumored on these forums with 0 dev denial, and 2. The possibility to obtain AND SELL exp books looks a lot like "Tipping your toe" into seeing the communities reaction, or simply progressive addition like all the steampunk aspects this game has, which had been fought against way back in the days, and as releases went by, little steampunk elements were added until we got to the point where we are now, a merging of fantastical and steampunk elements all in one. I don't care about the books, I care about the doors these books might be opening.

meh. If you read back, I KNOW what the topic is, but as Violet just reiterated, there are others who ARE talking about this. I Just put it out there so there might be some sanity involved should they decided to try and make it a revenue stream.

Very doubtful as this was the exact reason that shared pools were removed after some players utilised the initial player bonus during the 10x period to transfer the bonus to their main avatar.

I see what you are saying, it's kind of weird to have players selling XP to one another I would say make those books no trade. What I will say however is that the game absolutely should sell boosts on the crown store. Every single MMO on the market today sells character boosts.. this is not a weird thing. I don't see why SOTA should be any different, it's an especially helpful "catch up" mechanic for people who are new and join a game/feel behind. I know @Chris has stated in the past that he cannot understand the "but I am behind" mentality.. but this genre of game ALWAYS attracts the same types of players and a large portion of them have the "I don't want to be behind" mentality. You are leaving money on the table by not selling a character boost in the crown store. Depending on what level Mistrendur content starts out at.. I would guess the best time to launch said boost would be at the launch of ep.2 (I am being incredibly optimistic here) but lets say EP.2 launches and everything there is in a much better state than ep.1 (which honestly if you compare launch to launch we already know it will be) that could be a good time to call back old players/gather new players.. offering a level boost to whatever the begining content cap is could really help incentivize people playing it.

The balancing act of this is going to be selling a boost that acts differently than the current books.. I am not talking about selling a flat 250 million XP or whatever it is that levels you.. but specifically a LEVEL boost that automatically levels you up and maybe some no trade obsidian scrolls of knowledge that allow you to put skills at GM level (no trade of course!) I don't want the whales among us just buying XP off the crown shop either.

Hmm; What a **** storm over some books with what I consider measly xp. So the whales if there are more than a handful left pay someone to level them, no big deal as it’s the same story in real life where others pay for services.

So you get to a high adventure or crafting level via either method and can now dispatch a high level mob that made you have cold sweats before or help you create that one armor or weapon set. It’s great at first then it gets boring at least for me it does.

@Alleine Dragonfyre is on the right track as we need something fresh, I am tired of the hamster in the wheel mentality and would rather step out the wheel while kicking some other wheels over “Grins”.

Wake me up when the devs create the battlefields and rewards to make the game and all the effort worthwhile. Give me Castle invasions, ship warfare and other viable reasons to go past Adv lvl 130. What is there right now is blah.

Why ever would we want to listen to anything relating to Shroud's closest cousin in the niche MMO market?
