Since I don't play other games, I have to ask here. How does treasure maps work in other games?

    How are the maps found/distributed?

    And what makes it fun?

Usually how long does it take for a player to complete it?

    Should it involve killing mobs?

If there's one in Novia, should be it be scattered all over Novia? or just stay within a region.

    Thanks in advance.

    In 7 Days to Die,
    1. You find a map, and accept/activate it.
    2. There's somewhere on the map you have to travel to, usually in hostile territory.
    3. There's a circle on the ground where the chest is somewhere contained.
    4. You have to dig with a shovel until you find it. Occasionally, the game rewards you for your digging effort, and constricts that circle (like a battle royale)
    5. You get a chest of good stuff.
Unfortunately, parts 3-5 probably aren't happening in SOTA.

In runescape, these are called clue scrolls.

You loot a clue scroll from mobs, from caskets you fished up, from rock geodes or many other skilling activities.

Once looted, you read it and will get one of several choices of clue (anagrams, maps, puzzles, and a bunch of other choices).

As you complete your clue, you have a chance of receiving another clue or to receive the reward casket.

When you get the reward casket, the reward ranges from materials, to components, to items, to special rates that can only be acquired through clue scrolls.

LOL... Probably not doing Parts 1-2 either. But let's be honest, even if they did all of this the loot in chest would suck because after 6+ years they can't get loot right.

Thanks for the quick feedback. Wasn't expecting any this fast.

I should add, after doing @Tristano Sforza 's player quest (guys you should try it) I was thinking of the possibly of a treasure quest based on his method using lua.
So here I am asking for information. :p

In Legend's of Aria you can find treasure maps by fishing them up or from mobs of found on venders. When read you get coordinates to find the location to dig at. The map also states which town or map location it is in.

So the finding of maps and clues are pretty much random?

Is there any story telling when it comes to treasure hunting?

Are maps usually a single map? or split into multiple parts.

And usually how long does it take from finding the maps to getting the treasure?

Here's what a treasure map looks like in ESO:

How you actually find the location is probably pretty challenging unless you just happen to have been there before. I also don't know how you get at the treasure as I haven't done one yet.

So ESO, you can randomly get maps or they can be rewards for purchasing new content. Generally the map with say Map IV of Glenumbria and it will show the picture. You just have to find the location the picture is referring too and a mound will appear that only you can see when you get close. You click on said mound and pop treasure. Single use maps only and there is zero story to this aspect.

I think what'd be a good fit for SOTA is that the map is essentially a one-time key to open up an overland scene that has events/interesting battles/loot.

Do you think there should be a story behind a treasure hunt?

No I do not. I think having them be quick gratifying hunts with good loot is satisfactory. That being said, adding a lore note piece that tells a story over a large amount of treasure chests found, could be very fun.

If Tristano is willing to help me create such a treasure quest hunt using Lua, would you participate? :D

Maybe @macnlos will be kind enough to donate a treasure that's worth searching for. Heard he has a town, maybe a stewardship deed for a year? :p

Well Chris mentioned something like that but I hope it is something special like x marks the spot and is a bit of a hunt for the treasure with details.

    YES.

Personally (and I know I am in the minority), I enjoy looking at why a treasure was buried and a map was drawn to it. Just having it exist isn't enjoyable. Yes, I get neat things, and a dopamine hit for finding it. Why is it there, who hid it? Are there more like that?

Kind of like half the Banners... you know... just stuffed in a chest in the swamp or something. Why is it there?
    This isn't good enough:
Because we needed a place to hide it.
Why are these people protecting it? Because we needed combat to exist to ensure people don't just pick it up...

    *sigh*

Some things have probably changed... but still...

You know it would be AWESOME to find a more User Friendly way to create Player-made Quests other than LUA. I would definitely be on board with some easier functionality that would allow me to create these. It would serve as another philanthropy type activity that us older players can do for new players. It is one of those horizontal progression activities I keep saying that we need in SOTA, just like the treasure maps themselves. I would already be doing this if I didnt have to be a softcore programmer to coordinate it.....Just the thoughts of an old man that doesnt like complicated systems.

Creating scripts for conversationalists is done using ink, which is much simpler than Lua.
