I'd love to see a new quest item sextant added to the game. It would work similar to how the sextant worked in the Ultima series, but would work more adapted to our game. This would be an item that could be equipped on the off hand or neck slot on the character window.

This item when equipped, would then show under the compass the current X,Y,Z coordinates as well as the current terrain cell the player is standing on:

This item could be obtained via a one time quest, that could be similar to how the Avatar acquires one in Ultima IV or Ultima V:
Sextants first came into use in Britannia during the Age of Enlightenment, and were originally one of the many specialized goods available only through the Guild of Thieves. During the quest toward Avatarhood, the Stranger would need to learn a special password, "D," to obtain one from the guild's shops, as these clandestine merchants did not advertise sextants' availability to buyers. Later, during the days of the Oppression, the hero could obtain one from David of Greyhaven, who claimed to have invented the device.(Ultima Codex)

Players can currently type /loctrack and see the scene map name and current x,y,z coordinates, but having an actual equipped item that show the above information would be a more in game nice way to achieve this.

Also currently, players cannot see terrain cells. I would like for us to be able to actually see this information using this item.

Just an idea I was thinking about a while back and feel would be a nice addition to the game.

    Thank you for your time!

Sextant was very handy during player quests on Grimmwold back in the day...

I happen to know they have a sextant model sitting around somewhere already built. ;) (Devs: Yes, you do. Trust me it's there somewhere.)

Maybe once our boats can sail?
For now, /loctrack offers the coordinates but not the terrain type

The Sextant in the Ultima series was used for both land and sea travel. Once they add this, they could do various things that utilize this. And then when/if sea travel is ever added, they can expand upon the already existing item.

Generally, its a lot better to have a gamey way to learn location like with a sextant item then have all players learn to type / commands. Its a game, not a command shell.

How I always imagined this might work is like how it works in some Pokemon games; when you acquire certain new items and have them in your inventory, you get a new option for information display on your HUD. Ie if you have a sextant on hand the sextant information would show up in the UI. Theoretically set it up so you need a compass on hand to show the compass on screen, though not actually requiring the player to use the compass, just have it in his sack. But even if the compass is there by default, you could still extend the HUD with other items like a sextant or other such devices.

Right, no maps, let's add a tool to show location on top of the ability we already have to know that.

Surely a good idea, sure beats all the bling crack.

Types of items we should have really been getting into the game sooner rather than later.
