I hope we can still get lost :> We need limited sight on the travel map... :>

Makes sense. Distant areas on the map you haven't explored yet should be shrouded in fog.

Limitless sight do tell? Fog of war or another mechanism? ..

    - I don't think fog of war (ala Civ) is necessary

But I am not against the concept if it can be done differently

On thing I noticed in my little personal project to scour the internet to find examples of Pop - Up art ... is that they usually have a "backdrop" /"backwall" which can give "depth" and with the appropriate lighting generate "sky" / "nighttime"

I think that they could pull off a Night/Day cycle in overland map if they wanted and was feasible / reasonable to implement

No, not fog of war, which would imply visibility of the map -- just no movement of others shown. Actual darkness, like in Ultima V. I remember getting lost in the Deep Forest when I was playing the game as a kid, because in dense forest you had very limited visibility. Even if you just tried walking in one direction, you might bump into a large river system, and not know how to get around it. If it was night time, this might be fatal, as dragons sometimes inhabited the Deep Forest.

Lighthouses were helpful because of the same issue, out at sea. Your ship could get lost steering around the vast ocean, especially if it was at night.

I think they also need to zoom in on the map, so its harder to see surrounding features.

I'm worried that with a lot of decisions in this game, they're making it much easier than even the early Ultima games like U5 (you could get lost, you could starve, you didn't heal without food). And its going against the spirit of what they're trying to accomplish.

But yes, I'd argue we need to be able to get lost on the travel map.

They could incorporate night time on the overland map ... and you could use a torch with limited visibility or lumination spells (with a broader range)

But that would mean that they would have to incorporate the WASD movement and bring back the mini avatar (I'm for all of this)

And what is interesting is that they could create a maze on the overland map .. with night mode ... limited sight (with possibly exploration caves/passageways) with the Pop - up approach

    -

But yes - I want the game to be a challenge .. in every aspect .. have to exercise the mind as well as the body

    @Margard,

Yea, it would only really work with a more realistic map I think. I don't think night time on a paper map really jives. I don't know if it needs a mini avatar, but it needs to move away from the paper map.

I think it could work without WASD too.

Yeah I see that ... ultimately it boils down to "do they see the map as more than a map" ... "Is it a tool for exploration in addition to travelling" ...

Having the "walkability" like U5/U6 would lend itself for that but the "world map" for me ... I'm very open to something new / different

Quite pleased by the results so far:

    1. I feel younger.

    2. It also tells me that I'll be sharing this game with the same generation I shared with Ultima. My online community won't be tainted by non-believers and those WoW people. :p

Ok, so I should have put my vote into the 50 (since bday is this month) to break the tie, lol. Wonder if anyone didn't tell the truth, hehehe. As for the least, I think the safe bet is still 10-14 :p

"This entire thread I created for the sole purposes of researching what is possible within our forums, in specifically virtual gift gambling"

(we'll get back to the race itself in a moment, because I and Gabriel Nightshadow are in a nose to nose race that ends in about 7 hours 30 min from now)

I did check with the forums Mods and they gave a very thoughtful and all considered opinion that it was OK... as long as no "Virtual Gift Bets" (which are the only bets that can be made here) as long as it is well understood that " I " Nor Portalarium are in any way insuring any bets made here or exchanges that are between any players that enter into such a bet.

So, in this way, we are challenging the Bit Coin's realm's style, of virtual transactions, yet doing such betting by "gift of virtual transaction purchased from our SotA online store".
"So, in this way, it is the a bet of pledge"....

*Gabriel Nightshadow has 45-49 and Time Lord has 35-39, with race ending at 4:03 AM Thailand Time... for one Prosperity Tool of the Winner's Choosing*

"I came from behind by 2":D but now neck and neck  !
I hope you all like it :)
