    Necromantic Reagents is one. I guessing we going to have to grow some of our reagents.

    Lord Beli;
    I'd think it would be really cool if a player could die, then be cooked into Human Beef Jerky, then bring them back to like by necromancy and have them fight for you against them when they come back to get there stuff back. Or if they were a really good friend, you could then use their dead beef jerky self as a butler serving them dinner :D

    Well, I know that Lord British is having a discussion with Darkstarr concerning this issue of human beef jerky from he saying so on an interview with a guild called Mostly Harmless. So, whatever thought can pop into anyone's head that sounds like it's out of this world to think of, I'm sure you'll have at least one big fan of thinking of it, or at least talking about it. That's one of the big reasons I jumped on this dead and dying thread, because "Growing Contraband" hasn't been discussed enough by anyone... o_O
    I believe we owe it not only to Lord British, but to the community and Kingdom at large, to discuss even those horrid issues that many will avoid here.
    As you can see by the responses so far, "no all knowing thread guru has placed any link up to where the subject has been ever discussed before". I love it when they do that, because that lets us know we haven't read enough. But so far, all we've come up with so far here are references to reality based plants, with real world thinking.

    In regard to necromancy, I believe you could (once we have necromancy) you could go out, kill some wolves, raise them from the dead, have them walk home with you, then release them back into dead form on your crops to help them grow better. if they were human, then they could hoe themselves into the ground even :D
    Anything is still a possibility in our wonderful world of SotA choice and consequences ;)

    I want to be able to grow our own barley and hops to brew our Tavern beer. Indulge in a little homegrown tobacco and some greens for the pub grub ;)

    Kumakaze,
    I was happy to hear RG mention that we were going to need to eat more... I think I heard that mentioned in his Mostly Harmless interview.
    At least food will mean something... but I'm not sure about the brew :( I was hoping for more effect on the world than just a drunk effect. But, I still have my fingers crossed for bar Brawl spawn connected to it ;)

    Having food as a requirement rather than another method of buffing is an aspect lacking from too many games. Too often its buffs, insanely fast/insta-travel, never-leave-the-city queing for instanced dungeons. I find it funny that so many games put in features that betray the very genre they claim to be a part of "Multiplayer" & "Role-playing" being the big ones.

    OMG I have to travel across the world?! There's no insta-spell to get me there?! I need to eat!? What kind of MMORPG is this? :rolleyes:

    It should be like you regain health, mana, stamina when fed. When hungry you don't at all or super slow. With specialty foods you get a buff that lasts shorter than the fillfactor it provides so you can't just be on a continuous buff.

    I myself am more partial to quick recovery outside of combat, and food having a more long-term effect rather than having to stuff your face every time you leave combat. I know this is not what SotA is doing, but I like your health/stam/mana to be short-term temporary drains, while critical injuries received require more emergency care (first aid, specialized spells, etc). I just never bought into the glutton as a good (presentation) of recovery mechanic.

    I agree, You can't fluff your face everytime you leave combat because you are full. You need medicine not food.

    Fully fed from 1hp to 100% about 30 sec. Hungry about 60, starving till you eat , it doesn't raise.
    Band-Aids & potions & spells ftw

    New Britainian deep fried chicken balls in Hilt battle sauce. Nbdfcbihbs for short....

    Sir Isycle, Sir Doomgrin,

    I like what you're both saying about food and eating.
    I'm going to throw this out there, because you both caused me to think about it and I'm very interested in everything that deals with crops. Crops just come out of the ground and start an entire chain of other events that effect all sectors of our game world.
    I use to fight allot and I mean "allot" back when I was in the military. I'm not going to thump my chest here about it (that was a very much younger me), but you caused me to think back to all those daily fights I was involved in;
    Some of the men I was with would eat something in the morning before all the fighting would start, but I never would because it took away my sharpness, causing my aiming sights to bounce (that happens to everyone if you eat before firing weapons) but eating before a fight also made me heavier and more tired while struggling with my opponent. Even after a battle I wouldn't eat right away because my stomach was tight. But after a short hour after the battles, I would eat then, which caused me to take a nap if I could from the digestion proses.
    Energy drinks such as "Red Bull", do give me a punch of energy or alertness I enjoy, but after an hour passes, I can feel a crash. If I've drank many of them, then that crash lasts longer and I get a really bad attitude, not angry, just depleted.
    Then there are drinks like "Peptein"<---<<< maybe not available in the country you are in. This is a truly different drink than an energy drink is. If you drink one before you go engage in any learning, teaching, or heavily thought involved endeavor, 30 minutes after you drink it you will be the best Einstein you can be, but I have felt no side effects from their use, except a better test score in the school I attend.

    With all that being said and how it relates to the game;
    I never liked fast insta~food buffs ingame, but if we are to have them, I think they need to include a crash sometime afterword as in the case of "Red Bull", yet Red Bull I consider a Knight's or weapons effecting sharpness.
    "Peptein"<---<<< this is a freaky product that makes me think of Mages or use of Magic and maybe having some mental buff that skill could enjoy. there's probably some sort of crash I'm not feeling from it and probably would like to see some similar crash ingame for it's after effects.
    But over all "I'm not a big fan of food or substance buffs".

    Eating and it's effects:
    This is something that grabbed me about all that talk of eating and fighting; "That swimming after eating thing", no swimming from 1 hour before swimming to avoid cramps.... this waiting for the effect thing, or waiting for the anti-effect thing to ware off before coming to full readiness, just from eating food... I don't know how that would equate to anything ingame, but maybe some 10 min wait before getting full eating benefit?... many questions and examples came to my thinking of options that haven't been discussed came up, so I'm throwing the possibilities out here so maybe someone has an inspired gem to offer from all that...

    [IMG]
    "The Hexahedron Flower?"

    This is just a random fictional flower that I thought may be more appropriate to talk about as a contraband product other than mentioning our real world things that grow. I'll describe it as an alien from earth flower that grows in New Britannia in no great quantity, but could. I chose a cube shape (hexahedron), because everything good has plenty of crystals or powder on it if everybody did know that already ;)

    Thoughts;
    This could have the buff effect when processed and eaten or whatever, yet have no side effects, thus it's want by the general public.

    That's all I've got for now and I hope what I've forced you all to read here hasn't caused us all to be more dumb because of it :p
    Contraband, is it what's for dinner?

    I see a decent food system working like this:
    • You can consume X amount of food each day.
      • Each snack/meal costs Y amount of your daily consumption.
    • Each food type has a short term and a long term effect that balance each other out. Candy would give a short term speed boost, but longer term fatigue (i.e. crash). Healthlier food would give you a short term eating fatigue (don't go swimming), but a long medium benefit such as stats or OOC recovery increase
    Healing would be based on:
    • Different stats would give different rates of recovery for health, mana and stamina. These would be % of current so the less damaged you are, the faster you recover to full
      • Spells and balms can increase that rate
    • Critical injuries and status effects impact the recovery requiring bandages and expensive (component) advanced spells. i.e. some poisons could slow recovery, head injury could slow mana, crippled leg would slow movement.

    What about growing POPPY type plants and refining the OPIUM through Alchemy? Then SMUGGLING it!!! FUN!!! FUN!!! FUN!!!

    How about plants that create TOXINS for a specific type of foe-- for instance, ELFBANE! (I DO like elves btw).

    Full Loot PvP Farming Anyone? :confused:

    Bzus Said;
    Great points about the differences in farming and gardening. I had not thought of it in that light.
    All the details about maintenance and decay are not set in stone. Our goal is to have a realistic system that is both fun and rewarding.

    Richard Garriott said regarding food;
    I like the concepts of:
    Light wounds can be self healed, and that eating good food (which gives purpose to good chef's) aids in self healing, but also holding healing major wounds to the specialists so that healers are needed.
    I am interested in suggestions to reduce the "grind" capability of self healing.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Thanks Mercyful Fate!

    Those were all good reads on that thread on the healing properties of food. This RG quote I brought back with me above, (which is his only post on that 5 page thread) dealt directly with food as many posts did there, all having something to add or articulate from the RG line of thinking. I point out this RG quote here not only to illustrate that "Yep He is Reading the Posts Here", but further, that such a post relates directly to farming being needed.

    The need for farming has had many discussions on it, yet has not specifically had anything much to say about the ability to "Grow Contraband".
    Most of the comments on all those old threads that do mention Contraband are just saying that they want to do it, but add almost nothing about they why of it, or the community interactive proses that it would create or could be created from it. I will also mention here though, that "None of those threads made it past 2 pages" and the total of pages is only 8 if you combine them all together.

    From what all I read in all those threads, a player may not be able to make a living from being "Just a Farmer" and I think that's pitiful because of many who may wish to only be a farmer, but also interact in a significant way to the entire community. I say pitiful because of all the farming games that are out there being played online and we as players can't find a way to create that subclass of skilled player or play style. So I as a player am really pissed at myself for not having contributed to something that has been needed. Sure, you will see my posts also on those other threads, but haven't found a solution that will end my self pity.

    Diversification, comes to my mind when thinking about a player possibly making their way as a farmer and Growing Contraband could provide such an example;
    Let's say that you grow a limited quantity of ... Lets call it "Belly Button Fuzz" because the name doesn't really matter...

    "An NPC Go Between";
    So, you as a farmer take all of your belly button fuzz to the local snitch and give it to him, but he will only take so much of it, then anywhere in the Kingdom where there's another snitch, offers a smuggler (player) the fuzz for transport to another city for a reward, while everyone else is tipped off by another NPC elsewhere to begin the quest of contraband transport as RG has mentioned in his vids that he wants to do. Thus the quest is not generated by the computer, it's generated by the player. Yet, if the farmer wants to transport it themselves to the other town, the NPC snitch buyer there is just as the other one. So unless you have given the contraband to the snitch, you will not find any other buyer for it. If you do however want to transport it yourself, you go to the snitch give him (show him) the contraband, and he returns them to you and tells you where you must deliver them to, thus yourself becoming the smuggler.
    But ether way, the Farmer, nor the Smuggler get paid until the contraband reaches it's market of destination and the Snitch will only set up for transport a limited quantity, until that transaction is finally made from each individual player. This provides incentive to the contraband famer to become his own smuggler.
    Full Loot PvP Flag Anyone? If you do not as a farmer wish to Full Loot PvP, then you must wait for a Smuggler to accept your goods for transport and also wait to get paid for your contraband crops.

    "The Contraband Snitch"
    [IMG]
    [IMG]
    "Blade Runner"

    Market for Your Crops;
    Very similar to the Contraband Transporting system, yet a no loot system other than the risk of loosing your crops if that is what you are transporting. Totally PvE yet when a Highwayman Hijacker stops you, he can only take your crops, which he may not wish to do, because of the encumbrance of such a load, yet you can expect a better price by transporting your goods yourself, if you have made a contract with the NPC Marketer similarly as you did with the NPC Contraband Snitch.
    Such a system encourages gangs of Highwaymen because of having to distribute the great encumbrance of the crops being transported. But unlike the Contraband, there is no tip off message sent throughout the kingdom.

    With such systems in place, we could see the seemingly simple skill of farming, become a skill that has many dangers and opportunities for us all to better be drawn into, the act of providing good quest on our own.
    By the People, For the People... "Both the farmer and the Wolf"

    It could be like Farmville meets-- GTA and goes MEDIEVAL. Then there is the introduction of SHIPS and "VEHICLES" that would really accelerate the FUN!!!

    I'm not sure how it would work without collisions on the overhead map, but I'm a BIG fan of STRATEGY!!! (something the consoles seriously lack)

    I hope they find some way to make it work!

    Only 10 Pages of comments in the entire total number of farming threads here in SotA, "That's a Vacuum!"

    At the extremes of our threads vacuums exist, where many PvPers do not think that such things as, the play style of Farming could ever interest them because they are below them and therefore needn't be developed. On the other hand, there are many of the Crafting play style who detest what is discussed on the PvP issues, because they are below them and not wished to ever be encountered. Yet in our world, such extremes can become brothers, if they can only learn not to detest each other so much. These types of issues are so inter~related that they do touch even though they are so very different play styles.

    Our commerce needs a way to flow throughout our world and thus become a dynamic and vibrant way of living within it, because the Farmer play style is interlinked with a need for a place to market farmed crops in a questing style of play. Our PvP/PK highwaymen have a need to PvP/PK with unrestricted freedom to do so. One side needs more risk and the other needs more victims.

    "One Thing is for Certain", if we do not address these issues and leave it to our creators to decide,
    "You Get What You Get"... o_O
    "That's One Lonely PK!" :(
    [IMG]
    The Farmer... He's something to think about and maybe even encourage some crops of contraband, to make a profit of quest between them.
    The PvP/PK... He's someone to want his play style to flourish too, for the risk to meet the reward...
    We need some help, they need some help and that's well worth for both of us to think about...o_O

    One of the most heinous crimes in farming would have to be SLAVERY!!! Illegal but TEMPTING!!!

    Not only would slaves work as CONTRABAND but could also be a Temptation of Virtue!!! Increasing the harvest and allowing automation.

    My character would be against it in game, but as an EVIL choice-- underlings of some sort would make a fine slave trade.

    Elves or Satyrs as slaves would be wrong!!! Humans or Human children as slaves-- VERY EVIL!!!
