And I should clarify that I am an EMACS fan.

    Vi makes me cry.

Uh oh, I'm afraid vi, actually vim, is far superior to emacs. :)

Communicating with NPC's can be a bit painful. Sometimes it feels like I'm trying to speak English to someone whose primary language is Vietnamese.

Maybe what SotA really needs to appease the masses is built-in key bindings for vim, emacs, and ed. I mean we all know the chat window, the journal, and book authoring could totally use a rich editor complete with word highlighting, and regular expression. Just sayin. :)

When I read this thread's title, I thought "man, that is cold!" Then I thought "Well, at least he didn't say it was like using emacs!"

The reason this feels like a slam is because it's kinda true. Sorry, Lum! I know you'll pull it out in the end, it's just a little rough right now.

vi....now there's a blast from the past. Communicating with the NPC is nothing like vi for the following reasons:

    1. The commands in vi are well understood and documented. The 1st year of my computing degree would have taken much longer if I had had to guess at all the commands...or if they'd changed randomly...and come to think of it that would have been no bad thing...I had a grant, was drinking lots of beer and, unusually for a computing student, was getting lots of sex.

    2. I never had to go looking for the *right* vi to finish off a project. Which was just as well as searching for stuff is hard work if you're hung-over.

    3. vi never asked me how I felt which as I think I may have mentioned earlier was mostly like I'd just swallowed a badger and had Nick Kershaw playing in my head (Oh come on...you know you loved him!)

    4. Love or hate it, you begrudgingly had to admire the power of vi. Currently I just hate the NPCs and (I do apologize ever so slightly to the developer responsible because I know how hard this stuff is) sometimes it is just necessary to admit that your baby is growing up to be a 500 lbs gorilla with a bad attitude and a heroine addiction that only his mother could love and then it's hard going.

OK...I'm done now...and having had the hit of nostalgia I'm going to head off and try to set up a linux box as a great reminder of why I now use unity on a mac.
