All my respect to the japanese RPG genre, but I did not expect to see this kind of weapon in a Richard Garriott's old-school RPG.

    Did you?

Captain Jack is with you GG, this is a little bit like the fight between Conan and Red Sonia, this sword is not realistic in any way.

Captain Jack can only hope his loot chests in his hold will be as disproportionately as large as that sword is!

You're right. And they should make fireball and flame arrow more realistic while they're at it :)

I do apologize to you if you think my post is racist in any way, but that is not my intention. J-RPG is a very well established genre, with different artistic visuals than the western RPGs. That is my point and it is in no way related with racism.

Ardoris which is going to be the largest city added to the game so far is going to have an Asian and Venice inspired theme. They are going to have different parts of the world that are culturally diverse. Not having cultural and architectural diversity is boring.

The style, while not my thing at all, concerns me less than the fact there are 5-6 foot long swords in game.....

My concern is that it is a little too big, not the style.

We know that Ardoris has some Asian themes artistically and possibly culturally, and in BotA we learn that the Shogun Tsuneo once ruled that city. So it's quite possible that we'll see weapon styles in SotA that are similar in themes.

But is that sword representative of the lore or is it just some nod to JRPGs with its crazy blade styles? So there are two primary issues: blade style and blade length.

It seems that the sword is too big. So I googled around and learned about the odachi, which was commonly used by samurai. The largest one that I could find was an astounding 377 cm in total length, with the blade at 226.7 cm.

Now, the style. While the immediate reaction is going to be "Final Fantasy", perhaps they're drawing more upon Chinese blade styles than Japanese. An example, found here.

Exactly. The overall style itself seems more like that of a dadao, although stylized and much larger than what they're commonly known to be.

So there's likely a mix of Asian influences, borrowing from Japanese culture with its Shoguns and samurai and super long swords, and also that of Chinese culture and its dadao styled swords.

Having said that...yeah, Final Fantasy. ;)

Hard to hide behind bushes with a sword that big in your hands.
As long as they are slow and collide with walls and ceilings, I'm ok with giant swords.

    Realism vs reality. :)

Things have to follow physical rules as defined by the world. Those "magical" fireballs will still burn you when they hit you, they'll follow a parabolic trajectory when you project them and hopefully they'll dissapate slightly as they approach you. Sure their conjuration doesn't exist in reality, but if a person could draw "thermal energy" from the environment and propel it with their fingertips, then it's important that it works as you'd expect it would.

It's a game if everything followed perfectly what is realistic it wouldn't be any fun.

Actually, this was precisely the type of sword I wanted to see :D Hope to see more Asian-themed weapons in Ardoris in R9 ;) Looking forward to the day when I can finally forge my Dragon Katana o_O

Last time I checked... This world is not the planet earth. So why do they have to follow the way the earth was during this time frame?

That does seem rather excessive in size. But then some claymours I understand were 7-8 feet long. So for the moment I will simply confine myself to say..

    Move FIRST.. block second! :)
