The Ultima series afforded players a comprehensive reagent-based spellcasting system. It truly was brilliant.

Throughout most of the series (including Ultima Online), anyone interested in the arcane could practice wizardry by employing various combinations of eight reagents.

These reagents, as I'm sure you all know, are listed as follows:
    • Black Pearl
    • Blood Moss
    • Garlic
    • Ginseng
    • Mandrake Root
    • Nightshade
    • Spider's Silk
    • Sulfurous Ash
Perhaps the most interesting thing about these items is that they all possess specific attributes relevant to their respective lores. I've posted them in a spoiler.
    1. Black Pearl... rarely found, distantly scattered, highly sought after.
      • Distance
      • Propulsion
      • Projection
    2. Blood Moss... thought to grow between the toes of trolls & giants, accumulates & spreads rapidly in swamps, often dominating its landscape.
      • Speed
      • Animation
      • Locomotion
    3. Garlic... a staple in abbeys, kitchens, and reagent pouches. Thought to dispel evil and defeat malignant magic.
      • Protection
      • Negation
      • Ward
    4. Ginseng... a restorative, bitter root to an energizing, medicinal herb.
      • Healing
      • Enhancement
    5. Mandrake Root... shaped like a man, the heart of the mandrake root (its taproot), is considered to be the locus of its power.
      • Strength
      • Power
      • Energy
    6. Nightshade... its eerie, waxen flowers bloom at night. Poisonous to the touch, its beautiful petals are often mistaken for innocence by tired, aching travelers. These petals are often their last sights.
      • Illusion
      • Disability
      • Death
    7. Spider's Silk... as common as the spiders that weave silk, this is another staple of the practicing mage. With incredible tensile strength, it's capable of tethering the weightiest of possessions.
      • Summoning
      • Conjuration
      • Binding
    8. Sulfurous Ash... Created by volcanic disturbances and other violent earthen cataclysm, it gives off a bright light & searing flame when activated.
      • Light
      • Fire
      • Destruction
Next, how these reagents relate to spells...

Here's a spell that you may recognize:

    Energy Bolt!

It was a favorite of many - it boasted a high mana price, but also a low cast time, low reagent cost, and an incredibly high amount of damage output.

Off-hand, do you know which reagents were used in Energy Bolt? If not, then let's think!

The spell is long-range. It fires an explosive energy projectile towards its target.

    I'll give you some hints!

To accomplish the ranged dynamic, what kind of reagent would be necessary to enact the bolt's propulsion?

This ingredient is also found in these spells:
    • Fireball
    • Recall
    • Blade Spirits
    • Chain Lightning
    • Gate Travel
    • Energy Vortex
Another hint! All of these spells involve mobility and propulsion.

Well... one of Black Pearl's attributes is, 'propulsion.'

Black Pearl is the agent necessary for launching the bolt towards its victim. Of all the reagents, this one is the oil on the cog, the wind at the sail, it is the wheels on the wagon.

So, what causes the bolt to explode on impact?

Sulfurous Ash, of course! It is the incendiary member of the reagent family.

    Sulfurous Ash is...
    • Magic Arrow
    • Night Sight
    • Fire Field
    • Lightning
    • Reveal
    • Flamestrike
    • Meteor Swarm
    • Earthquake
    ... a truly devastating reagent!

With these two combined (propulsion, destruction), we've now got an energy bolt!!
    So, what's the relevance?

Well, I offer these insights to you all because this line of thinking is how we can establish our reagents as currency, because that is exactly what they are.

Channeling powers from Void or Virtue, our reagents are taken as pay or penance, and so we must accurately represent their values in the same way that Lord British had in the Ultima series.

You'll find that this design philosophy is reflected in all of the 64 spells in Ultima Online. All of the reagent attributes can be directly tied to the spells which consume them.

Another thing: what does your character say when he or she casts the Energy Bolt?

    'Corp Por'

These words are nothing fanciful. They're no accident. Each word has its own meaning!

    In this case...

'Corp,' means, 'Death.' It reflects the explosive Sulfurous Ash reagent.

'Por,' means, 'Movement.' It reflects the flexible nature of the Black Pearl reagent.

Again, this is reflected throughout all of the spells of Britannia. These 'Words of Power' are attached directly to the reagents required/the spell effect.

Just something to think about when considering the purpose of necrotic reagents in spellcasting & alchemy!

As of right now, Death Magic offers us the following (and I really hope that the Devs improve these options)...
    • Death Touch - short-range hit-point transfer
    • Death Ray - long-range hit-point transfer
    • Death Field - AoE hit-point transfer
    • Death Shield - converts percentage of damage received into hit-point transfer
    • Corpse Explosion - corpse explodes, dealing massive damage
    • Animate Dead - creates a zombie from a corpse, or raises a skeleton if no corpse is targeted
    • Summon Undead - summons an undead to fight for summoner
There hasn't been an official statement regarding reagents. While that's a bit of a setback, it's not entirely debilitating.

Before I continue, I'll restate an updated list of harvestable human reagents that I'm now working with:
    1. Skin
    2. Hair & Nails
    3. Blood
    4. Flesh & Organs
    5. Bone
I've dumped 'Muscles,' in favor of 'Flesh,' as 'Flesh' consists of muscle (duh!).

With consideration to the fact that the same man who designed the reagent system that I'd mentioned above may potentially implement a reagent system in SotA, I feel that we can make some inference as to what role necromantic reagents would fill - even if they only function in 'Death' magic (which I hope is not the case, if implemented).

By observing which reagents may potentially interact with spells, we can establish roles for said reagents (similar the the original 8 reagents of the Ultima series).

I see Death Magic reagents being assigned to spells as follows:
    • Death Touch - heal reagent, damage reagent.
      • The heal reagent could be necrotic.
    • Death Ray - ranged reagent, heal reagent, damage reagent.
      • Again, the heal ingredient could be necrotic.
    • Death Field - ranged reagent and/or AoE reagent, heal reagent, damage reagent.
      • Considering the spell's intensity, I feel that two reagents should be necrotic.
    • Death Shield - buff reagent, bind reagent, hex reagent and/or heal reagent.
      • Two components could be necromantic here.
I feel that all of the following spells past this point should require necromantic reagents for full effect - they are all related to the dead & altering their lifeless, material forms.
    • Corpse Explosion - damage reagent, hex reagent, ranged reagent and/or AoE reagent.
    • Animate Dead - bind reagent, hex reagent, life reagent, heal reagent.
    • Summon Undead - summon reagent, bind reagent, hex reagent, life reagent.
Now, to which roles do we assign our necrotic components?

Concerning the basic principles of the suggested harvestable ingredients, this is my thinking thus far:
    1. Skin - Protection
    2. Flesh & Organs - Control (Power, Weakness)
    3. Blood - Mortality (Life, Death)
    4. Bone - Resilience
    5. Hair & Nails - Growth
    Therefore...
    • Death Touch - Blood reagent, damage reagent.
    • Death Ray - Ranged reagent, Blood reagent, damage reagent.
    • Death Field - Ranged and/or AoE reagent, Blood reagent, damage reagent.
      • Alternatively, the Blood reagent could be used as a 'damage reagent,' and have some other 'heal reagent' fill its original role. *shrug* Subject to debate.
    • Death Shield - Skin reagent, binding reagent, Blood reagent and/or hex reagent.
    • Corpse Explosion - Flesh reagent, Hair & Nails reagent, Blood reagent, ranged and/or AoE reagent.
    • Animate Dead - Flesh reagent, Hair & Nails reagent, Blood reagent, bind reagent.
    • Summon Undead - Flesh reagent, Hair & Nails reagent, Blood reagent, summon reagent.
That's it for now - what do you guys think?

Alchemy will be pretty straightforward. In UO, the alchemical properties of a reagent were literally their individual function:

Sulfurous Ash, used in damaging spells, damaged people.

Black Pearl, used for mobility, refreshed Stamina.

Ginseng, required to heal, healed hit points.

    So on, so forth.

    Thank you, guys. :)

I really hope to see reagents of all sorts in this game!

Even to this day, it is such a fascinating, deep system that RG devised so long ago... a remarkably creative & intelligent way to handle magic.

Thanks! I really like playing with BlazonForge
I'm aware that I break rules regarding style but I'm just doing it for fun.
I made "Watermelon Unicorn" thinking of Eriador and it would be astounding to see High Baron O'Sullivan charge at me with "sad chicken"
