Read it and weep (or celebrate)!

Just read it in the weekly update:

    "Bitcoin Accepted Here
We’ve received many community requests to support Bitcoins for pledge and add-on purchases, so we’re happy to announce that we now accept Bitcoins as a full-payment option for pledges, Add-Ons, and Player Owned Towns!"

Wow. Accepting bitcoins themselves rather than a service that converts bitcoins to actual money? That's just... wow.

Looking forward to seeing what happens with this. I wonder if he'll turn SotA into a bitcoin mining client and dedicate some cpu cycles to it or do it when you're idle or /afk.

We do indeed use a service that converts Bitcoins.

So you're not accepting bitcoins, you're accepting cash.

Never had bitcoin, don't even know where to get bitcoin. Anyone have a good site to get a newb introduced to this concept? I've heard about it and am curious but not sure what all the fuss is about.

I dunno if there is one source that's better than another but it probably isn't a bad idea to start here: https://bitcoin.org/

If you are in the US, easiest ways to buy bitcoin would be circle.com and coinbase.com. You can use your bank account or credit card.
coinbase.com also works in many European countries. For convenience you can install coinbase app to your Nexus 5.

And what is the advantage of using bitcoin over standard cash or credit?

That is the 100 dollar(pardon the pun) question.

Bitcoin is pseudo-anonymous. The blockchain which records all transactions is public. Anonymity is possible but (very) hard. It requires keeping your addresses anonymous.

When you fund SotA with bitcoin, they receive 3-4% more than if you pay with Paypal or Amazon.

Bitcoin transfer fees are tenfold less than traditional credit cards or bank fees.

Bitcoin is virtual commodity, like gold, and is not pegged to dollar or any currency. It has own conversion rate that is highly volatile now because it's still in experimental phase and its market cap is not big enough to keep bitcoin/USD rate stable.
I'd say bitcoin is the new standard of money but it's in early alpha testing now.

Gavin Andresen, one of the leading developers, has said something similar. More than Bitcoin was in Beta. As we know from Sota the terms alpha / beta are pretty fluid. There is a lot ideas and innovation. Much like any programming project progress is made iteratively: many small mistakes until you hit upon something great then the progress leaps.

Bitcoin is the progenitor cryptocurrency: we know it has flaws and could be replaced by something better in the future.

Bill Gates also came out with positive statements about Bitcoin: http://www.bloomberg.com/video/bill...ecause-it-s-cheap-dQ4qHV4~TLSnUIuIRfZBVA.html

He's not an idiot and mentions that some of his potential customers aren't looking for anonymity (nor are they terrorists / money launderers), but are looking for a cheap way to move money.

Kind of like how they accept silly plastic cards with strange 16 digit numbers that get converted to cash, too? Don't be obtuse.

Hmm. You make a good point. Credit inherently depends on the value of cash, which would suggest that so does bitcoin. If you can't convert bitcoins into real money then it's useless.
