I wonder how much Scotch it will take to get the Portalarium building to raise up on its giant robot legs and begin the battle against their new overlords.

Maybe they'll get to fixing bugs now that they can get back to work. They must of been in idle for a while not knowing their future.

Pretty much puts Unity on the road to being:

    A) Sold off entirely

    OR

    B) falling into mediocrity alongside power engines like UE4

Here's the official announcement from David Helgason on the Unity website: Link

And here's the corresponding discussion in the Unity forum: Link

Here's an article about Riccitiello after he left EA: Link

I have strongly mixed feelings about this. Unity always managed to preserve a certain "made by indies for indies" charisma and their credo to "democratize game development" was believable. Now having the guy in the Unity driver seat who brought us the 485th version of Madden, I fear the same as Joviex.

Gotta love that the empire theme straddles the background. Along those lines, here is a nice poster of companies that were killed by EA while he was in tenure:

the irony in the CEO of the company that killed Origin is now in charge of the engine being used by RG's new game is beyond calculation

i still think microsoft would of been a far better buyer for Unity.

Now Unity will undoubtedly be commercially skewed.

The best we can all hope for is that his karma catches up to him and he gets canned as quickly as he killed the games he touched. I, for one, am a big believer in karma, so we'll see.

I wonder what terrible things John Ravioli is going to do to Unity now. Guess only time will tell...

So to paraphrase the audio in that clip...

"So, when a kid is enjoying a video game, that's not enough. We don't just strive to make good games that people want to play, we need to get them hooked. Much like a drug dealer might give someone a good product. Then when their customers need more of that product, the dealer says 'sure I have plenty, hand over some cash'. It's all about timing, and there's no better time to ask someone for money then right at the moment they're having the most fun. You see there's a yield curve where fun intersects with competitive balance. Ya know, where you 'need more ammo' or 'you're out of lives', we can facilitate more fun but it's going to cost you more money. I can tell you that out of my four hundred thousand dollar a year salary, I personally spent an insignificant amount of that buying stuff for games I barely even remember the name of, both our products and our competitors! So just imagine what some kid that actually enjoys this stuff is going to do. Can you say mommy's credit card? We can build an entire industry around that. So as you can see, if you're an investor and you don't really care about gaming experience, I'm your man."

It would be really cool if Shroud of the Avatar took on this philosophy. Maybe put a coin slot on the Oracle?
