    This sounds like it will be end game gear. So... when they finish the game?

    Where did you hear that it was "supposed to be normal as bows and swords"? Been here for almost 2 years and I personally have never heard any info about electric weapons being standard.

    early SOTA thoughts <

    Welcome Boom. I have not seen anything on electric weapons so I cannot comment too much on them. Someone on the forums has mentioned early steampunk ideas and looks for the characters perhaps that was voted down, but don't quote me. I did find this early
    video that Richard Garriott made and I can tell you I love this video, and also the mist on the overland map that makes it discoverable you progress through the map. I also love that you can walk anywhere without being slowed, and the dragon and cart on the map.
    Also I love the conversation bar much much better.
    Oh well sorry to derail your thread. ***cheers*** to you.

    so i did bit google, and even this site -> polygon has writed
    "What they are doing is including weapons that touch on a bit of science, like tesla guns that use channels of ionized air to zap enemies and guns that project smoke rings of noxious clouds of poison."
    so just saying its not all my imagination...

    Hi Boom again. I just checked out your link and it is very possible since Richard said this that will be a type of weapon that comes later. So much is still not in the game.. Good find. I can tell you are enthusiastic as I am also.;)

    I recall Richard spoke about this a little bit during one of the Dragoncon panels... and it's kind of a funny story. Richard was originally wanting to get away from the typical European medieval fantasy setting, and was going for something much closer to what would generally be deemed "steampunk" (although I don't think he's fond of the term, I think I've heard him say "Teslapunk".) But that got a lot of negative reaction; people really wanted something closer to a medieval fantasy setting like the Ultimas. So they changed gears and went with that route, slowly introducing occasional steampunk elements, and ironically, when they did, everyone went "Oh, we love the steampunk stuff! Do more of that!!!" ;)

    Maybe this concept art is from that very early stage, before they switched to the more medieval fantasy setting?

    @abovenyquist,

    Lord British and the other devs have recently been using the term "clockpunk", which is what's usually used to describe an early Renaissance version of steampunk based on the mechanical clockwork and automata of the era. Not in its most technical sense accurate, since Tesla towers go beyond clockpunk and into electricity, but its good enough imo :<>

    As they've revealed the fantasy-punk elements, its gotten pretty much a mixed reaction on the forums, some people hating it and some people loving it.

    The main thing I disliked about those early drawings was I felt they too heavily riffed on the "belt of potions" you see in a lot of modern RPGs. I thought it was a fun play on the idea, but IMO the belts of potions were always a bad game mechanic that RPGs really just needed to let go of. So I wouldn't have been happy to see it in the game. Though I'm happy to see a more full fledged tinker/artificer class. Tracy Hickman brought this into Dragonlance with the minoi (tinker gnomes).

    They just added a spell this release to make weapons have flame effects (though visuals for those aren't all finished). I presume we'll get electric spell effects.

    They've also said in the future we can enchant weapons/items permanently with spell effects.

    I can't give you a date. But it is coming.
