How can we all be "the" avatar?

From a RP point of view how can we all be the avatar that is foretold about in the prophecies?

I always thought UO answered this. When the Gem of Immorality was shattered so was Britannia. So we were each THE Avatar for the shard of reality in which we played. It makes enough sense in the lore to make me happy anyway.

 

Here's the problem I see with that logic... only Britannia was copied.. any "Avatars" arriving from Earth or anywhere else (which was not copied) shouldn't be arriving in one of the shards. The shards are (for lack of any official account to the contrary) completely isolated from the real Britannia and as such.. the rest of the real universe.

The single player story is just that.. single player. I would suggest then that some of the "lore" is exclusive to single player offline and that online players need not necessarily be bound by it. Just as online players need not be bound by the game's intro movie or the notion that all avatars must be from Earth. How you RP your character should be up to you. Including background (within a certain amount of reason but that is between you and everyone else you RP with).

 

How do you know that we are all currently in the same reality now? Maybe we're talking to each other from different dimensions of a different realm already and it's just so similar that we just don't notice the difference?

I mean, maybe you're in a dimension where your coffee cup is blue and I'm in a dimension where your coffee cup was shocking pink. But I wouldn't know because I have no idea what color your coffee cup might be.
So, maybe we can all be avatars because even though we may seem to be in the same dimension and seem to see each other, maybe we're really not. Because who knows what color your coffee cup might be in your reality really?

 

If someone wants to take that kind of reasoning to justify their view of the game's lore that's up to them.. and that's all I'm going to say on it.

Hmm..I always assumed that there was an infinite number of parallel worlds (that's current scientific theory, even without the Gem of Immortality ), so sure everyone could be the Avatar

I'm sure the link to the video is on the main page, but to summarize..

The character you play is your avatar; note the capitalization of the first letter. Richard wants Shroud of the Avatar to tell a multiplayer story, which kind of makes it difficult for any one player to be “the Avatar”. The new story gives a role to everyone, every avatar, every player that plays it.

In story terms, there are many "avatars" in the world, some or all of whom are returning to the world. To many of the world’s citizens, this return will be seen as unwelcome, an invasion. Things are, after all, going pretty well without the players.

Is there a destined one, an Avatar? Yes…and s/he is among the "avatars". How that plays out in the game and its story is going to be part of its structure.

There will be a reason why so many avatars are in the world, which will be seen as mostly a negative by the denizens of the world. It is an integral part of the story. Is there a destiny for an Avatar, or more than one? Possibly.

But essentially the plan is that Richard and Tracy understand the difference between THE Avatar and us "avatars". If all goes well, that will be addressed in the game. Perhaps you should not be so eager to help your fellow avatar... Who knows, perhaps YOU are the one?

 

I wonder how many RPers are actually going to RP the "avatar" thing. I would imagine, from previous experience, that lots of people will be "non-avatars" and natives of the land, instead.

The narrative of everyone being from Earth is too narrow and restrictive making it unbelievable. That everyone should find their way here after researching "ancient" knowledge that in Earth time would be less than 10 years old.. and everyone feeling like they belong in New Britannia despite leaving behind friends and family, their home and everything else.. when we're talking potentially hundreds of thousands of people? As if.

That lore might work for single player but not for online.
