It is based on the lot, not the house.

You must have a land deed of at least village size in order to place the Viking house.

If you have a village land lot, you can use a village sized basement.

If you have a town land lot, you can use a town sized basement or smaller.

If you have a city land lot, you can use a city sized basement or smaller.

    Et cetera.

The Viking house is a village sized house, so you would need at least a village deed to be able to place it. You can place it on a larger lot, if you have one, it will just give you more room for landscaping. In other words, if you place it on a town lot, you can have a town sized basement beneath it, even though it is a village sized house.

Further to what Jack said, you can use any STYLE basement with any STYLE house, as long as your plot size is large enough for the house / basement you have in mind.

I have a village lot, which was why I was considering the Viking House.
I was not sure if any of the basements that are on the Owl's Head vendor would work or I would have to also buy the basement from the add on store.
I wish there was a way to see how much property you would have left once a house is placed on the lot. I saw the Viking House, but it was on a Town lot.
I was just curious how much room you would have left outside the border of the house, up to the lot boundaries.

A town lot is twice the size of a village lot, so it would be half as much space on all sides around the house. A village lot can use a village or row house basement.

you can see the Viking house on a Village lot in Paxlair.
in addition, any village basement can be placed under your house.
if you want a permanent basement you have to buy it from the Add on store,( as far as i know), unless it is included in yoour Pledge rewards.

i've used the viking house on a village lot - there is not much space for anything outside of the building itself. i've then also used the viking house in a town lot, and that is the PERFECT size if you plan on having some things outside of the house, like a boat from the stretch goal store, and a wishing well from the water.org sale.

This is inaccurate. See comment prior to my own comment about Viking house on Village Lot vs. Town Lot as anecdotal evidence. I could provide a mathematical proof but suffice it to say that the Town Lot will always have more than twice (much more than twice in most cases) of the available yard space as a Village Lot for any given house that fits on a Village Lot.

The actual experience of placing houses on the lots they were designed for has generated a separate discussion about yard space because many are finding that they have very little or no functional yard space after placing a house on the appropriately-sized lot. Worse yet, players are purchasing hedges, walls, fences, etc in the Add On Store and finding they have no functional yard space when they place them depending upon the house they placed on the lot.

You're right! Because the house isn't twice as large.... it would probably be more like 3 times as much yard. Good catch, thanks Archibald. Though the lot is twice the size.
