Apparently they have the same stats - wondering if its just an image difference or if I'm missing something?!?!

Just personal preference at this point, but hopefully that will change. I crafted my war hammer with the "thumping" buff for knock downs just to help differentiate it from my axe and mace.

It seems like I remember a discussion a while ago where it was suggested that the different weapons would do different damages to different armor. Like against plate a mace was better than axe or hammer, but on leather an axe was the best. Now if this will manifest, I cannot say. It is also possible that there will be speed differences. If there are speed differences (eventually) then there should also be damage differences too. It will be interesting to see how things balance out over the next few months.

In ESO some skills did different stuff depending on the type of equipped weapon (fire stuff = burn, ice staff = freeze, mace = chance of knockdown, sword = chance to bleed, etc.)

Some passives added different stats as well. If I remember correctly:
Daggers increase your Weapon Critical rating by [x]%
    Swords deal [x]% extra damage.
Axes have 50% chance to deal [x] extra bleeding damage over 6 seconds.
Maces ignore [x]% of your target's Armor.
Two handed swords deal [2*x]% extra damage.
Two handed axes deal [x] extra bleeding damage over 6 seconds.
Two handed maces ignore [2*x]% of your target's Armor.

    where X usually is about 1.5 - 5% (not a high value)

Personally I think that slight differences like that are the way to go :)

I believe there is some of that by weapon class now: blades are poor against plate, good against cloth for instance. Bludgeon is best against plate (and presumably less effective on cloth).
