    After the game is fully finished, polished and released, then it would be a good idea, imo.

    Fractured space (e.g.) did one in alpha and got a lot of new players from it.

    I think this would be a great idea once the game is in Alpha or Beta. The game isn't even in Alpha yet... You have to crawl before you walk and even that before you run... The game has at least a year or two before it moved to beta or launch. Relax. It's still very early.

    What that we are finally getting to the PRE alpha stages? Advertise yeah, but the game wont be received very well in it's current state... just sayin... (eyeballs steams current rating)

    But seriously: Though I am hesitating to share stuff from my b+ hangout because I am not sure if it's sensitive or not I am willing to take the risk and tell you that RG said we will go to official alpha soon. And that the beta following it will be a short one.

    In my opinion that point where we go to alpha would be the perfect moment for a free weekend on steam.
    Well if you label it properly as an alpha game ofc.

    This makes sense if Alpha starts with systems complete and Beta starts with content complete. Really looking to moving from system building to content building.

    If that's the case then the alpha stage is the perfect time to do a Steam promotion. Still time left to fix things which won't be the case in a short beta. No guts, no glory - full steam ahead :)

    Considering all the content and functionality that is still lacking, I'd seriously hope that 'soon' is a very relative... stretchable term. Even more so when you check how many of the planned goals make it into every release and how many are being postponed. If 4-6 month is soon, then I'm all for soon ;)

    True, true. I was thinking something like that when I posted it. 'soon' is a very imprecise term. But I have no date if that's what you are thinking.

    On the other hand: If farming and cooking makes it in this or next release the basic mechanics would be all there.
    Yes, yes, polishing needed. Not going to nay-say that. But they would be complete non the less.

    We've got to have a very different perception of 'all the base mechanics'. But I don't want to derail the thread (any further) so I'm simply going to leave it at that.

    I don't think there should be a free weekend or whatever until the game is in a better state.

    The game as is will turn players off. People like us have already invested into it so we have a large incentive to see it through. Players who get to see and play the game without investing anything will have less reason to return once the game is in a better state. I think a free weekend at this point would do more harm than good.

    Probably true, but speaking for myself, as a founder who sold his pledge last spring (because the game was going in a direction I was not interested in), I'm still lurking and would certainly take another look if a Steam weekend preview were to be proffered.

    That's the point though. If you offer the chance to check the game too early, people get a wrong impression. Be it because the game is not in a finished state, because the game's going to change, or simply because not enough people are online as much as they're going to be when wipes stop.
    And a great gesture like yours to give the game a second chance is sadly the exception from the rule.

    My understanding is that what Steam does with its catalog - including discounts, sales, bundles and "free weekends" - rests on their shoulders and theirs alone.

    So it's gaben who should be pushed for such a feature, not starrl or richardg.

    Anyway, I have the same opinion of others: showcasing it now may do more harm than good.

    Streaming, on the other hand...
