I see for a few seconds a black starup window - and closed. This is all, what the steam error.log tells me:

Was the game working on this machine before R28, and then it stopped working recently?

Even after some patch rounds, the Steam-client for Linux isn't able to start without a crash. This problem appears so far on Debian Jessie, Ubuntu 16.04 and on different computers (Lenovo Edge E420s, Panasonic ToughBook CF-C1, Panasonic ToughBook CF-19).

Also tested now the stand-alone-client for Linux, and it's the same: I start the launcher, start the game, the game window opens, black ... and closes. Back in the launcher.

    What's the gpu driver?
    (e.g. do ' glxinfo | grep -i opengl ' in terminal)

Launching it from command line and pasting the result?

Launching from the command line gives no result. The result you see at the top. And the glx drivers are those of Intel and one time of AMD/Intel-Hybrid, with a 2GB AMD-GPU.
