RG specifically had stated that it was going to be a one time pay for the game model. He used to be good to his word.

I disagree fully, for me the more decisions they make the worse the game gets.

They might have talked about it, but RG stated undeniably at the beginning that it was only going to be buy to play. you my friend are the one that is incorrect.

Durability makes no difference to your ability to win a fight (unless of course you venture forth with armour and weapons that are about to fall apart - but that's on you).

Yes. It is. There is no requirement to spend any more real money. You can grind for gold and use that to buy COTS from other players.

I am all for a volunteer subscription since the idea first came up.
Dunno why we didn't even try this as a solution.

They could provide voluntary subscriptions that package an equivalent value of store credit with bonus COTOs.
For example, a $5/month subscription could provide $5 store credit plus a gold COTO each month. If they use the store credit to buy COTOs, then that's 6 COTOs/month for the price of 5, which is a reasonable reward for providing a steady, predictable income.
If the subscription runs for a full year there could be a bonus extra month for free.

NOTE: This would be entirely voluntary.

The longer the subscription lasts, the cooler are some extra rewards (nothing game breaking, but kewl mounts and stuff).
Final Fantasy XIV has such an model, works quite well.

    Yeah something like that.
Or a subscription for x bucks where you get y Cotos. The number should be high enough so the subscriber is able to sell a few Cotos so there are always some of them are avaible ingame

Before I get flamed: i would be happy with a vanity stuff subscription as well.
But I guess Cotos are here to stay.

Another way to do this is to implement an "Premium Membership" where you can get such rewards.
But the Premium Membership is not required to fully enjoy the game.

So for the Premium Membership you get some monthly rewards + some extra stuff the longer the Premium Membership lasts.

That's not exactly true. If the durability of an item is too low relative to the cost of repair, use of that item becomes unsustainable.

It's easy to say that you can just use gold to buy crowns for repair, but at this point it's impossible to say with any certainty if that will be sustainable for most players. Even if it is sustainable, it's not as if there is no ripple effect of a player spending all of their resources just to maintain their current gear.

edit: Also (not directed at Womby), the argument that any particular thing is okay or not significant because it saves time is nonsense. Even the most grossly overpowered things that you could imagine could be classified as timer savers as long as the reward given out is something otherwise obtainable. Skill levels, adventure levels, quest rewards, all obtainable with time, none generally accepted as purchasable items.

Game developers have realized for some time now that unfortunately selling strictly cosmetics is not enough to fund an online game.

Remember, they want to eventually make money rather than just keep the lights on. This isn't a charity organization. Richard Garriot has invested a lot of his own money into the project as well.

    Fair enough.
Still there has to be a better way than paid repairs.
I just can't come up with one ^^

Rare drop premium repair currency is a far cleaner option than the RNG gamble boxes that so many other MMOs make revenue from. In my opinion of course.

    Ofc. and everyone understands.
But the current COTO design is still bad.

And Richard Garriot, sorry but he has a lot of $$$ anyway, i am not so worried about him :p

My problem with most of the subscription ideas are:
    - Adding vanity items that forces everyone to get it (or you never get those vanity items or makes those vanity items sold on the aftermarket for +$50).

I am ok with a optional subscription just for store credits
Unfortunately, this would force everyone to have to subscribe or miss out on kewl mounts, rewards, etc. and not enjoy the full game.

A subscription should be for the equal amount of store credits and no bonuses.

    @Lum
My main problem with the COTOs is the implementation.
There is no lore. Why restore Crowns durability?
I thought this is a story based game with deep lore, and now this.
    My solution would be:
Keep the Gold COTOs in Store, but dont use them direct for repairing.
Merchants could exchange them against an "Essence of the Obsidians" (or something else),
and weave a story around why this essence restore durability.
Psychologically sideeffect: I wouldnt constantly reminded that i pay in dollars.

    Combat Bonus:
Ottomaddux the Undead Slayer entered the ancient cave moving forward sword in hand. He raised the blade high and could see the light shinning from it in a perfect radiance of power. This power allowed him to smite undead with 50% more damage than other Avatars and had been handed to him from the great Add-on Store! The undead shrieked and cowered from the might of his purchasing power.

    Non-Combat Bonus:
Ottomaddux the Durable entered the ancient cave moving forward sword in hand. He raised the blade high and could see the light shinning from it in a perfect radiance of aesthetic fluff. The shiny allowed him to whack at random things just the same as any sword but because he had lots of Obsidian Crowns this allowed him to do it much longer before it broke! The undead let out a mocking howl before devouring Ottomaddux and placing the sword on its trophy case. As the legend tells, so that if Ottomaddux returned he would be able to hold the sword again and again before each death.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
