    It's pretty 'ok'.
If I remember right you can get a better Steam machine for the same cash from ZOTAC.

    Correction: I was wrong.
You seem to have found one with a good price/power relation.

    Yep, it's an average machine.

If it were me, I wouldn't buy anything that wasn't in a mid-tower case (that one appears to be quite small, and heat is the enemy of all electronics)
Also, I would ditch the HD entirely and go with:
    240GB Intel 540s Series SATA-III 6.0Gb/s SSD - 560MB/s Read & 480MB/s Write
instead. Intel SSD's have a 5 year warranty and I've never seen one fail (out of dozens installed).
But really, it should be an M.2 , not SATA3 at all, given the massive performance increase from M.2, if you really want to step it up for disk performance. But that Intel 540 option is budget-smart.
The video card is a bit 'meh', in light of the the release of the GTX 1060.

Does SOTA run on Steam OS or should a person install Windows onto such a machine? I was reading about SteamOS compatibility, and that came up... anyone have any experience with Steam OS and SOTA?

No, it will not run on Steam OS, so we recommend using Windows.

Just taking this with a grain of salt, cyberpowerpc in the past had been known to deliver a build that DOA occasionally. The worst part of that was the customer service was horrible to deal with when you try to do the RMA.

They may improve over time in the past few years, though. I haven't dealt with them after the college years were over.

Have you talked to any local computer shops? I had mine built by one here and they did a great job. I told them what I planned to do with the machine and how it needed to perform. I already had the case, Power supply, and case fans. What I bought was a 6700K, Gigabyte board, 2 500 GB SSD drives and a 970 video card. This machine runs great without any problems on Win 10.

If it runs on Linux why doesn't it run on Steam OS (which is a Linux Distro based on Ubuntu I think it is)?

I made this build list for my friend the other day. Would be a more upgradable customizable build if you can make it yourself. http://pcpartpicker.com/list/JZT29W please note I manually added the price for the video card which is subject to change and you could pick any other card but the GTX 1060s are going for around $250 - $300 ATM so pretty good bang for your buck.

If you have OSX or Linux, expect more problems and less immediate support for those problems. I hate Microsoft as much as the next person, but that is where the vast majority (95.5%) of paying customers are*:

Therefore, that is where businesses spend most of their development and support dollars.
If you are prepared to accept that fact and still support a different operating system, then you have my admiration. Keep up the good fight!

I, however, shall not be joining you on the front lines.

I don't disagree hence why my PC build I posted includes Windows 10 lol. But SotA probably "runs" on Steam OS if it runs on Ubuntu. But really if you want to play games use Windows.
